Wild Horse Youth Challenge Mustang Days was developed to showcase the versatility of the Mustang. Wild Horse Youth Challenge is a two day event. Showmanship, Trail and Freestyle.

Through fun competition at the Mustang Showcase & the Wild Horse Youth Challenge, we hope to entertain and educate, as well as bring awareness to the needs of Mustangs. Youth ages 9 - 18 from across Kansas and neighboring states are chosen by application process in April. Once chosen and c**t is picked up, their goal is to gentle and ground train Weanling or Yearling wild c**ts and return to the K

ansas State Fair where they compete in 3 classes. Trainers have the option to adopt their c**ts for $25 or put them up for adoption via live bid at the end of competition. We are modifying as we grow so stay tuned and follow our page!

Cory O’brien & Johnny West, thank you for supporting the youth trainers of Wild Horse Youth Challenge and Mustangs in need of homes, we appreciate you!

We got the wild horse bug several years ago. We helped a few participants in the Wild Horse Youth Challenge, and started adopting in 2022. That year we got Archie and Possum and use them both in lessons and trail rides. Realizing just how much work these kids put into training, we decided we would try to get at least one every year. In 2023 we got 3 - Jed, Mater, and Toney. Again, the training that went into them was incredible. Toney wasn't able to get the full training last year, so the difference is astounding. While he is making progress, Jed and Mater are total pets. We are eager to get them under saddle when they get just a bit more size.

We have also adopted 3 burros this past fall at the Open House. One was born at the prison facility and is a silly, ornery, and affectionate little gal. The other two were started but still a bit wild. They are turning into great pets, have bonded with our stock and are excellent livestock guardians.

This program offers so many benefits. Reducing herd sizes in the wild. Allowing young people to train them that may never have the opportunity otherwise. Getting young gentle horses into the community. And helping inmates at the correctional facility give back to the community and develop skills for when they are released.

Please send info on what the horses have accomplished after the competition and updated pictures. We’d love to show the versatility of these American icons gentled by Kansas youth. There should be more than 100 of these mustangs to check in on their progress through the years.

Great job Piper! Albeito will be available for adoption at the Kansas State Fair via competitive bid after the challenge is completed on Sunday. Opening ceremonies start at 2pm on Saturday September 16th. Conditioning/handling(Showmanship) will be the 1st class, followed by trail. Sunday will kick off at 9am with Freestyle, meet the colts, awards ceremony and auction. Two fun filled days, come out and support these youth, they have done amazing things the last 120 days!

Here is one for working with feet. You can use as long of a rope you want and are comfortable with. Keep in mind, if you are standing withing reach of your horses legs, they can get you, but if you snug up to them, they have less leverage to kick. Happy training!

For those still struggling with halter. Here is our approach to haltering(mini version)but all the steps. Hope its helpful! One other thought, some horses are better on one side or the other, if thats the case with yours, turn the halter inside out and do it from that side. You’ll be able to do it from both at some point, but to get it done, use that method.
