…And we’re back with more #Zoolympics! Our ocelot Nico spent some time this morning working on his alley-oop. With an 18 foot vertical leap, Nico would surely help bring home the gold for the USA against France today in basketball. #hometownhutchinsonzoo #ZooLife #VisitHutch
Next up to show their Olympic prowess are our mini farm yards! Our middle yard and goat yards had a “field hockey” show off to see who reigned supreme.
Which yard do you think should win gold?

Welcome back to the day 1 coverage of our "ZOO"lympics events here at the Hutchinson Zoo!
While our fearless parrots were busy competing in gymnastics, our Sulcata Tortoises were busy bringing home the gold in soccer! Although the game had a slow start, our tortoises were able to pull through the win. That lettuce never stood a chance against our food-motivated (and surprisingly quick) armored athletes.

Happy zookeeper week to all of our rehab keepers here at the Hutchinson Zoo!
Today we will be highlighting all the hard work our rehab keepers do today on our social media stories today. Our behind the scenes view will be a little different today because we cannot talk in our rehab room. This is to better prevent imprinting on humans for our rehab patients, and to set them up for success when it comes to a future release.
We will also be doing a tour of our rehab facility today from 1-3pm as well. So come on by today to celebrate our rehab team!

Today our sulcata tortoise feeding included carrots! We have seven sulcatas and they can be challenging to enrich. Our keepers give them opportunities to move and stretch as they forage for food. Do you love tortoises? If you are interested in meeting them up-close, check out Hutchinson zoo.org to learn how you can meet and feed them! #hutchinsonzoo.org #visithutch #WeAreAza
Our North American River Otters, Theo and Whimsy, out on their Easter egg hunt! Hunting for food is a natural behavior for our otters and we always give them opportunities to seek and find food throughout the day. Today they had find hard-boiled eggs hidden in their habitat. Eggs are a regular part of their diet. #hutchinsonzoo #visithutch #WeAreAza
Got the Monday blues? Studies* show that watching this video of our otter wiggling will reduce your stress! 🦦

Happy St Patrick’s Day from the Hutchinson Zoo!
Today our animals got “pots of gold” in the form of foraging baskets where they have to dig through the “gold” (ice or paper) to find their food!
Swing by the zoo this afternoon to see our otters get another pot of gold at noon, and our ocelots will get one at 3:30pm!

To wrap up our week of behind the scenes enrichment we've been sharing with everyone, we wanted to introduce you to our African Grey Parrot: Elliot! Elliot lives upstairs in our gift shop and you might have heard him before mimicking noises he hears downstairs.
For social species like parrots, social enrichment is very important for their wellbeing. We do this with Elliot through training. Check out the video to learn about how our trainers get to work with Elliot.

One of the ways we enrich our animals here at the zoo is through training! Training helps keep our animals' brains active while also helping build trust between keeper and animal. Check out this video of our carnivore keeper doing some training with our 2 red foxes Nick and Gideon.
We do a few different kinds of training with our foxes but the one you see in the video is behavior training. This is when the keeper uses a verbal or hand cue to ask the animal to do something like sit, climb, jump, etc. before giving them a reward. These behaviors help us show off our foxes natural skills that they might use in the wild. Our foxes are excellent climbers, so they have a "climb" behavior which you can see our keepers do with them in the video.

Thanksgiving Ocelot Enrichment
Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃
Today we are giving thanks to all of our amazing staff who came in today to care for our animals, prepare diets for the weekend, and do general maintenance we can't do when day guests are here. Help us thank our team in the comments by sharing your favorite animal photos you've taken at the Hutchinson Zoo!
And without further ado, enjoy these fun photos and videos of our ocelot, Nico, who got a Cornish hen for some Thanksgiving enrichment!

Our biggest role in black-footed ferret conservation is to create awareness around this iconic species and what is happening with them in the wild. Our resident black-footed ferret, Tilly, is one of the ways we help educate guests about local endangered species so that we can better understand and co-exist with them.
Come by this week to say hi to Tilly and learn more about how black-footed ferrets are important to our prairie ecosystem.

Introducing the mini farm FINALE: Say hi to Sea Biscuit, he is our miniature horse! He can often be found rolling in the dirt which gives him some wacky hair-dos afterwards. Come visit him on your next trip to the Hutchinson Zoo!
Introducing the mini farm: Meet Bucky, another one of our domestic goats. Bucky is an African pygmy variety of goat. He is the troublemaker in this yard, often found chewing on keepers’ tools.
