ANNOUNCEMENT 📣
If you haven’t heard yet, Happy Hounds will be offering Creative Grooming to our services!

What is creative dog grooming?

Creative dog grooming, as opposed to standard dog grooming, is when many liberties are taken in the grooming process. This may include things like different colors, different drawings on the fur, different shapes, jewels that might be added, etc. The only limitation is the groomer’s imagination and availability of products.

Your dog can be styled to look like another animal, characters from a movie, anything really. Or it could be as simple as making patterns in the fur. Either way, it is a fun way to show off your grooming skills and get some attention for your dog.

Is creative dog grooming cruel?

There is a definite controversy you will hear about if you start searching Google for information about creative grooming. People are concerned that the products used may be harmful or that the dogs are on their feet for too long during the process. Some states ban the dying of dog fur and some countries ban creative dog grooming all together.

This is very understandable as pets are (practically) people, too! Here is a bit more detail about each of the concerns.

How long are dogs on their feet for creative grooming?

While some designs can take 30-40 hours (yikes!), nobody wants to, or could, keep a dog on the table for that long. Instead, more complex designs can be done in stages so the dog is never on the grooming table longer than he or she would be for a typical grooming session.

Are the products toxic?

Another problem critics may point out is that the dyes and products used may be harmful to the dog. This is absolutely NOT the case. An experienced groomer will know what not to use, and that includes human hair dyes. (Just in case you didn’t get that, we’ll repeat it. NEVER use human products on a dog.) If you’re unsure what is safe for your pet, ask your professional groomer or vet. Pet dyes are specifically made to be non-irritating for your dog’s skin pH, which is very different from human skin. You want to keep the dye away from your dog’s eyes and mouth and discourage any ingestion of the dye. If you aren’t really sure how to dye your pet’s fur, it’s best to take him or her to a professional groomer.

Food coloring is a great non-toxic dying option as well. It’s available in many colors and can even be mixed with water and sprayed onto your dog’s fur.

What about “Dogs didn’t consent to this!”

That’s true. Dogs are not verbally consenting to creative grooming. However, they will also not let you do anything to them that’s painful. If your dog hates attention, then this may not be a great route for him or her as creative grooming will most definitely draw attention to your dog. However, if your dog enjoys being groomed and all eyes on him or her, then consider creative grooming to be a win. He or she may enjoy the extra admiration as well as any extra bonding time they have with whoever is doing the grooming.

What kinds of dogs can be creatively groomed?

Most creative groomers prefer Poodles as they have thick coats that can be sculpted. And while some dogs are more suited for fancy cuts, any dog, whether they be purebred or mixed-breed, can participate. Even if the fur isn’t thick enough to sculpt, accessories like bows and jewels can be added and dyes can be applied.

Where can you check out some creative grooming?

Competitions would be a great place to check out the skilled hands of professional creative groomers. If you can’t make it in person or there isn’t a competition near you, or you simply cannot wait to see some creatively groomed dogs RIGHT NOW, Google Images has some amazing photos that will blow your mind. Pinterest of course will not disappoint if you search “creative dog grooming” and you can follow The Creative Groomer on Instagram if you feel so inclined! Below are some we’ve done already and others that are examples. 🐾💓

Did you know that pet grooming is a completely unregulated industry? There is no requirement for formal education, no required continuing education, and no required testing or certification?

Anyone and everyone can just pick up a pair of clippers and start advertising themselves as a groomer and charge people for a service they aren’t trained to perform.

It’s completely up to you, the owner, to do your research and make sure the person you are trusting with the health and safety of your pet is qualified to care for them.

Every groomer should be trained, and just “basic” training takes months.

It takes years though to truly master the ins and outs of grooming and everything that goes along with it.

Pet grooming is so much more than just a hair style.

*It’s knowing dog behavior and how to safely handle all the different personalities and quirks.

*It’s recognizing health conditions that would be better suited seeing a vet such as skin or ear infections.

*It’s being prepared for any and all emergencies that can happen, from seizures to allergic reactions, to nicks and cuts and quicked toenails without panicking.

*It’s knowing how to best deal with a variety of coat types properly.

*It’s being able to know when to stop a service on a particular dog due to behavior or health.

*It’s having the knowledge and patience to handle a different species while holding razor sharp clippers or 8 inch long scissors.

At the very least, the groomer you use should seek out continuing education to make sure they are current on the changes in the industry, from upgrades in products to tools that make the process easier for the pet and them.

They should be current on their pet cpr/first aid certification which needs repeated every couple of years.

They should be able to answer your grooming related questions with knowledge and confidence and if they don’t know the answer they should know where to find it.

They should have an emergency plan in place with a local veterinarian in case anything happens, because when working with animals it’s not a matter of if something happens, but when.

They should come recommended by other pet professionals.

And it’s worth noting that there is nothing wrong with using a groomer that is still in training, but they should be working alongside an experienced groomer and under their direct supervision.

Ask the questions, after all you are paying them for a service. A groomer who has spent time and money to be as educated as possible is excited to share their knowledge! 🐾🐾

Hello Happy Hounds family! This is the owner and I want to apologize for the inconvenience with being booked out. I want to thank all my loyal clients for being so understanding and supportive. I found out a couple months ago I was pregnant and I unfortunately ended up on bed rest, during this time I had 2 groomers and myself but I could only come in when I was able to do to the circumstances. I guess while I was at my most vulnerable knowing the situation the 2 groomers decided to steal my business structure ideas along with some photos and change the color of the background, post them on their new page for advertising and to also book themselves out with a bunch of clients for the whole month on purpose and then quit out of the blue to open up their own salon here in hutto to try and make happy hounds go under in hopes that I wouldn’t be able to work due to being on bed rest. Their plan to destroy my business to benefit themselves was so out of the blue. I want to apologize to all of my clients as this was completely out of my control as I and others had no idea they would do something like this. They took advantage and used me and in the mix tried upsetting yall thinking id have to cancel. I will be at work and I have help coming to address the overflow at the salon from the groomers leaving. I will get the ones that were booked under these groomers taken care of and get everyone else booked in a timely manner. Thank you for understanding. We appreciate all of our loyal clients that have been with Happy Hounds and have stuck by our side as well as the new ones that we have acquired. 💕
