Perspective is everything…

Arlo (dog) and his amazing Human Steph

“I am a survivor of the New Zealand volcano that erupted in 2019… we lost my dad and my sister as a result of the eruption, so now there is just me, my mum and our gorgeous dog, Arlo.
I was in a coma for three weeks and I was in hospital from December 2019 up until the end of May last year and the whole time, what kept me motivated, was coming back to Arlo.
My sister, Krystal, and I got him together only 6 months before we went on the cruise to NZ, so he was just a puppy when it all happened. We were only supposed to be gone for two weeks so we put him in a kennel, but two weeks turned into much longer. After everything that had happened, I just wanted to get back home, of course for the memories of my family and to be surrounded by those memories, but also to see my puppy because I was so scared I was going to miss seeing him grow up.
On Arlo’s first birthday, I was able to get my first day pass from hospital to see him for the first time since the eruption. I was so worried that he had forgotten me or that he wouldn’t recognise me because I looked different with the mask on and my bandages and everything… well I was totally wrong!
It was amazing, literally the best moment ever! The second he heard my voice he just ran for me!
It was a moment of pure joy. He remembered me! I was so happy. My mum had to hold him back because she was worried he would scratch me or something in his excitement!
He has been so important for my recovery. Every day he motivates me because I want to be able to take care of him myself. I want to be able to walk him, just to be able to spend time with him is such a blessing. He was mine and my sisters and I want to raise him for her. She was studying to be a veterinary nurse… she treated Arlo like a baby, she would always say “He is my baby”. She would brush his teeth every night and do everything for him. She was just so great…
So now that’s what I want to do, for her.
He means the world to us.
When I look at him I see my sister and my dad.
He is family.”
