Our dear friend Jessie said goodbye tonight to her sweet boy Volly. We all loved Volly; it was impossible not to fall in love with him.
For many days we will mourn, hurt and miss him along with his owner, Jessie.

I am blessed to have known Volly… and days like today I’m overwhelmed by our farm family who cares enough to be there when it’s not easy. Kelsey, Debbie… I love you and the size of your hearts.

Great words of advice:

One of my all time favorite pics, "The Savage" and the story behind it. Horse on the left was in the lead, horse on the right was closing in the gap and starting to pass. Instead of the horse on the left putting forth more effort into gaining and keeping the lead, he reaches over and bites the horse on the right. Meanwhile the horse on the right has his ears laid back and his eye on the prize. Moral of the story... Never entertain foolishness. Have a purpose in life, stay focused and never let others bring you down. Winners are not people who never fail, but rather people who never quit. There‘s an old saying: a champion is someone who is willing to be uncomfortable & rock bottom has built more champions than privilege has. It's about hard work and the drive to do it. Determination to keep pushing forward when others would love to see you fail. Winning isn't the score on the board, it's seeing something through to the end and congratulating your opponent. If you win through bad sportsmanship there is no real victory.

Do not compare yourself. There is only this moment, this horse. Your hands, seat, voice and leg, define the parameters of the entire world for this horse.

What anyone else is doing, or has ever done, does NOT matter.
Whomever it is that you look up to — or feel less than —
Is in turn, looking up to another rider, wishing to aspire to that level. So be content where you are… You are blessed!

YOU are your only competition… Just be better today than you were yesterday. Try hard for this horse you ride and try hard for yourself. Most of all, enjoy this time; Every moment. Every stride. Every cue that is answered with a response.

A call from a member of the public, led to a volunteer making a visit to a Durham building site in April 2018. Peering through a fence, she was horrified at what she thought was a dead horse amongst the rubbish – there were deep furrows in the mud where Heidi had been struggling to get up for what had clearly been a long time.

Miracles do happen however, as moments later she was seen to be breathing and the shocked volunteer quickly made a call for assistance.
Heidi was lifted to her feet and from the beginning showed a unique fighting spirit which convinced everyone that she should be given a second chance.

She was carefully transported to us where she embarked upon a very long and arduous road to recovery – unable to stand without our help for a total of 45 days. Her treatment included an immediate plasma transfusion, long term management of deep & painful pressure sores and the need to lance a huge abscess.

We have rarely seen such a serious case of neglect and despite many setbacks during the recovery process, Heidi always showed a brave, fighting spirit. We believe this spirit was central to her remarkable recovery.

Her recovery took the best part of a year and she is now in excellent condition, perhaps even a little too portly. Her skin is still sensitive, especially at the site of old wounds.

Heidi’s special case means she is likely to remain at Here4Horses.
