Tired of your dog pulling on walks? With a little patience and practice, you can turn those tug-of-war outings into calm, enjoyable strolls.

๐Ÿพ Start Simple: Practice in a quiet area and reward them for walking by your side.

๐Ÿพ Stop the Pulling: If they pull, stop walking and wait for them to return to your side.

๐Ÿพ Reward Good Behavior: Use treats or praise to reinforce calm walking.

Consistency is key! Every walk is a chance to teach and bond with your dog. What leash training tips have worked for you? Let us know!

Food puzzles are a great boredom buster, brain exercise, and way to make meal times last longer and be more interesting. You can buy one or make one out of household items at home. Just be sure to monitor them so they don't eat the puzzle itself!

We have single digits in the forecast. As temperatures drop, itโ€™s crucial to keep your pets safe and warm. Here are a few tips to protect them during the colder months:

1. Limit Outdoor Time: Shorten walks and outdoor playtime during extreme cold. Frostbite and hypothermia are real dangers for pets. (Except for those northern breeds, they are crazy.... Looking at you huskies!)

2. Dress for the Weather: Consider a warm coat or sweater for dogs, especially short-haired breeds. Booties can protect their paws from ice, snow, and harmful de-icing chemicals. (We love critters in clothes, share those with us!)

3. Provide Warm Shelter: Ensure outdoor pets have insulated, weatherproof shelters. Indoors, provide cozy bedding away from drafts.

4. Check Paws Regularly: Clean your petโ€™s paws after outdoor activities to remove salt, ice, and chemicals.

5. Stay Hydrated: Winter air can be dry, so ensure your pet always has access to fresh water. This is important for you too!

6. Beware of Antifreeze: Antifreeze is toxic to pets. Store it securely and clean any spills immediately.

7. Maintain a Healthy Diet: Pets may burn extra calories to stay warm or may burn less due to minimal exercise. Ask us if youโ€™re unsure about adjusting your petโ€™s diet or their weight.

Talk -- or squawk -- about a smart bird! A pet parakeet in Japan was returned to its owner after the bird TOLD police where it lived.

Credit his owner, a 64-year-old woman, with the amazing feat. She once lost another parakeet who flew away, so decided to take precautions this time around.

"The owner decided to teach the address to this parakeet after she bought it at a pet store two years ago," a police spokesman said. "The bird's name was found to be Piko-chan as it said, 'You're pretty, Piko-chan.'"

What can your bird say?

What do you do if your pet gets into something this holiday season? First, don't panic! Rapid response is important, but panicking can interfere with the process of helping your friend. Take a moment to safely collect any material involved to help a vet determine ingredients or missing pieces.
Call your vet or your local emergency hospital, we recommend Viking Vet Hospital (208) 552-0662 for emergencies outside of our business hours.
To help yourself be as prepared as possible for a situation like this, create a pet first-aid kit and have important phone numbers readily available, like Animal Poison Control (888) 426-4435.
