There has been a recent increase in client concern regarding side effects of the injectable monoclonal antibody, Librela, that is being used to treat osteoarthritis in dogs. We know that what the media is reporting on is scary, and we understand the concern. Librela, as with any drug, comes with a list of potentially serious side effects. These serious side effects are rare, however, and occur in less than 10 per 10,000 patients. All reported adverse events are currently listed as rare.
Librela has been studied extensively and has been deemed safe for use in dogs. The alternative medications used to treat osteoarthritis can also have adverse effects. Every pet is different and when deciding medical treatment for your pet, it’s important to talk to you your veterinarian. They will take previous medical history, age, and response to previous medications into account before making a recommendation and helping you decide which treatments are best for your dogs.
If you have any other questions, or if you are concerned that your pet is having an adverse reaction to Librela, give us a call at 208-522-8010.
