🐶✨ Crate training is more than just a training tool—it’s an essential life skill!

A crate provides dogs with a safe and familiar space, helping with housetraining, travel, and even reducing anxiety in new environments. Whether your pup ever needs to be hospitalized, move across the country, or adjust to a new family or pet, being comfortable in a crate can make these transitions much less stressful. Introducing the crate gradually with treats, toys, and positive reinforcement can help your dog see it as a cozy retreat rather than a confinement.

However, crates should never be used for long-term confinement or as punishment. Dogs need social interaction, exercise, and mental stimulation. If your pup shows distress—like excessive barking, biting the crate, or trying to escape—it may indicate anxiety, and alternative solutions should be explored.

A well-trained dog is a confident dog, ready for whatever life brings! 🐕💛

So proud to see one of our PNWCDR pups thriving at Rogue Detection Teams! ❤️🐾

Veteran bounder, Justin Broderick, with his spark, Jekyll.

Adopted from Pacific Northwest Cattle Dog Rescue, Jekyll bonded with Justin immediately and have been teamed up ever since.

Jekyll has sniffed for avian mortalities at wind facilities, predator scats for carnivore research, and, coming up this season, will be conducting ungulate detection in Oregon together!

Justin is a founding member of Rogue Detection Teams, and the day he retires from this field will be a sad day for all of us.

📣 Foster Coordinators Needed!
PNWCDR is looking for Tacoma/South Sound foster coordinators to help with local hands-on tasks and remote computer-based tasks. Without foster coordinators we can't onboard new foster homes and we can't intake more dogs. This volunteer roll is crucial to saving dog's lives! Can you help?

🫶 Local + Hands On
Getting to know new foster parents in your region, traveling to them for onboarding home visits, advise on any foster dog management ideas for their home. Opportunities to do local rescue events (optional).

👋 Remote + Computer Based
Foster support: reviewing foster check-ins; being available via rescue's Discord, email or phone to help foster homes. On-boarding new foster homes: reviewing foster apps in Google Drive, intro phone calls. Matchmaking: help the intake team match up and incoming foster dogs with suitable foster homes. Helping to arrange transport.

It takes a village to meet our foster dogs’ needs and PNWCDR is 100% volunteer-powered.

Welcome Annabelle to Our Rescue Family!
Please join us in giving a warm welcome to Annabelle. This sweet 11-year-old girl found herself in need of a new home through no fault of her own, along with her sister Scout — her humans had to make the difficult decision to surrender her due to moving. Despite her age, she’s got the heart and energy of a spunky 5-year-old, and we can already tell she’s going to bring so much joy to everyone she meets!

To help Annabelle feel extra loved, consider picking an item from our Corvallis Amazon Wish List (link below) or making a donation as a special welcome gift.
Every little bit helps us provide the best care while she waits for her forever home!

Sweet Shy Missy Needs Your Help! 💓🏥👩🏽‍⚕️

Missy saw Heart of Oregon Vet Cardiology today. Missy was saved from an overcrowded shelter and when she arrived in our care it was discovered that she has a pretty significant heart murmur. Today she received X-rays and an echocardiogram. It was discovered that she has Valvular Pulmonic Stenosis. This is something she was likely born with and it makes it so her heart needs to work extra hard. She has a moderate case so she may or may not need surgery. Today we need to raise funds to cover her diagnostics and future care. Every donation means the world - This sweet shy girl deserves it!

URGENT: We Need Adult Dog Fosters—Here’s Why

Right now, shelters and rescues are overflowing with dogs in need, and we are in dire need of fosters for adult dogs. While puppies are often quickly placed into homes, adult dogs are at risk of long shelter stays, declining mental health, or even euthanasia due to overcrowding.

What We’re Looking for in Adult Dog Fosters:

✅ Space & Stability: A calm, stable home environment where a dog can decompress from the stress of shelter life.
✅ Patience & Compassion: Many adult dogs have been through a lot—moving from home to shelter and back again. They need time to adjust and feel safe.
✅ Basic Training Support: Some dogs may need reinforcement of basic manners, leash walking, or house training.
✅ Willingness to Work with Different Needs: Some fosters may need extra socialization, while others just need a quiet place to rest. We’ll match you with a dog that fits your experience level!

Why Adult Fosters Are So Important:

🐾 They Give Overlooked Dogs a Chance – Puppies get adopted fast, but adult dogs are often passed over simply because of their age. Fostering helps them get seen and gives them a second chance at finding a home.
🐾 They Help Prevent Shelter Stress – Long shelter stays lead to anxiety, depression, and behavioral decline in dogs. Foster homes provide a healthier, happier environment.
🐾 They Free Up Shelter Space – Every foster home opens up a space for another dog in need, reducing euthanasia rates due to overcrowding.
🐾 They Provide Critical Info for Adopters – A fostered dog’s personality, likes, and quirks become clearer in a home setting, making adoption much easier.

Can’t Foster? You Can Still Help!

🐶 Donate: Support with supplies, food, or medical care sponsorships.
🐶 Share This Post: The more people see it, the more dogs we can save!
🐶 Encourage Others to Foster: Know someone who might be a great foster? Send them our way!

We are at a crisis point—without more fosters, dogs in need will have nowhere to go. If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the time to step up and save a life.

🐾 Help Us Cover Blue’s Vet Bills! 💙

Sweet Blue gave us a scare with a bad case of diarrhea—likely from a bully stick! 😥 To be safe, he had X-rays done to rule out an obstruction and was put on special food to help him recover. Thankfully, he’s feeling much better now! ✨
However, his vet visit came with a $614 bill, and we could really use your support to cover the costs. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference in providing the best care for our rescues.

Can you help Blue? Donate or share to spread the word!

🐾 Meet Chloe! 🐾

Chloe is a 10-year-old Australian Cattle Dog with a little sass and a whole lot of love to give! This sweet senior gal is looking for a forever home where she can enjoy her golden years with humans who appreciate her playful spirit and dedication to snacks.
She adores walks, cuddles, and training time but needs a family who can help her pace herself due to some physical limitations. Chloe is friendly with dogs but can get a little too excited on leash—she's working on staying calm and would love someone to continue her training!
Chloe does have some medical needs that require attention, but they don’t take away from her being an amazing dog! She has nerve damage and back pain, which is managed with Gabapentin (a pill twice a day). She also takes Cosequin once a day to help with general arthritis.

🐶 Best in a cat-free home
🏡 Would love a mellow dog sibling or to be the center of attention
💖 Thrives with companionship and a loving, patient home

Chloe is currently being fostered in Beaverton, OR.

Our Story

Pacific Northwest Cattle Dog Rescue is a non-profit organization based in Skagit County, Washington. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate & rehome cattle dogs and heelers from animal control groups, shelters and owner surrenders.

As a foster-based rescue organization, we rely on the generosity and dedication of our volunteer network. All of our dogs live in foster homes where they are part of the family until they find their forever home.

We offer courtesy listings across our social media to owners who wish to keep their dog during the rehoming process. Submit a courtesy listing request here. Owners interested in surrendering a heeler to PNWCDR can submit a questionnaire.

We seek to rehome cattle dogs coming out of states with a higher density of the breed, such as Texas and California. We are building partnerships with shelters, animals control groups and transporters across the west.
