"Howdy, I'm Maple!

Maple is a young, petite, female, Australian cattle dog, currently being fostered in Eugene, Oregon. Maple is a very, very fun and exuberant dog, but is also a LOT of dog. She is a very sweet dog but her impulsiveness and herding drive make her a dog for a person experienced with the breed and willing to spend time and energy on continuing her training. All that is to say Maple is a true "diamond in the rough". The flip side of Maple's intelligence and enthusiasm for life are what make her a challenging dog to be sure.

So, what adjectives best describe Maple? She is smart, curious, happy, energetic, has personality plus, athletic, fun, funny, up for anything, and a great hiking companion. Maple's ideal home would be on acreage with a fully fenced area for her to play in safely without worry of her being able to escape. Her ideal adopter(s) would be an outdoorsy person/people with an active lifestyle. She will need an owner who is willing to continue working on impulse control (not running out the door, staying, waiting for permission in general). Once Maple gets a good workout, she settles in the house nicely for a nap. Maple is crate trained and she sleeps, eats and rides in a crate. She loves learning tricks and is easy to train.

"Meet Amelia! This girl is one of a kind and as silly as they get. With her goofy facial expressions, her unique play style, funky run-hops and belly flops, she is a sure way to get your daily dose of laughter in.

Amelia is a herding breed mix and can be a little nippy when she gets excited or is seeking attention. Due to those tendencies and prey drive, she would do best in a home without children or cats while she continues with her training. We are looking for people that will remain calm and patient while she works on replacing this habit with positive behaviors. This smart girl is eager to please, knows many manners and walks great on leash and harness! While very cuddly and affectionate, Amelia has some fear and sensitivity to body handling. We are looking for a home with someone who has experience with fearful dogs.

Amelia is food, toy, and praise-motivated and has made great progress in many ways! Her new home would need to continue using positive reinforcement and force-free training with the help of a certified trainer. APSFH would love to connect you with some good resources and trainers. Although she still has some work to be done with her impulse control and some resource guarding prevention, she just needs someone to show her new ways to gain attention and to help her feel safe and secure. "Meet Bruno! Once Bruno gets to know you, he is the most loving and affectionate, happy-go-lucky guy! Being a young Cattle Dog, Bruno is looking for a household that is familiar with his breed and one that will provide him with plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. He needs a home with an adopter who has experience with fear and reactivity, who will continue force-free training to help him in gain trust, build confidence and learn coping skills for his fears and anxiety. Bruno would thrive in a quiet house and location; with an adopter who would work with him to overcome his insecurities and learn new behaviors. He is such a fast learner and is already doing so well in the manners department, he knows commands like "sit," 'paw', and how to use the bell to tell folks when he needs to go potty.

Bruno is pretty skilled at making new dog friends here at the shelter, but has 'stranger danger' with new people, especially to men and can become reactive under certain stressors. However, with a slow outside introduction and a game of fetch, it doesn't take long for him to warm up! Once he knows he can trust you, he is a very fun and loving, confident companion, who wants to be right by your side.

Bruno has lived with children in the past but but was sensitive and a bit snappy to them. Due to this and since he can be fearful, we are looking for a home without children."

"Hello,

I need to rehome this loving dog because she needs a yard. She is non-destructive but can't take walks. It's extremely frustrating to me and I live in an apartment. She freezes on walks and I cannot carry her. Once she sees home is out of the way and that she can't go back inside, she's happy to walk for miles as long as she's returned home. There is no workaround in this matter for me. I am used to active breeds I can hike, walk long distance (up to 10 miles a day is fine with me). She can't do this. She's fine at a dog park. She's a great TV mate and good with people and other dogs. I just cannot live with this type of dog. I don't understand how to. She needs a yard where she feels safe for running. She will go no further now than 3 blocks from home and demands being returned. I have tried everything."

"We're looking to rehome our Stumpy Cattle Dog, Reggie. When I adopted him, I had older children, and he got along well with them as he grew up around them. However, I recently had a baby, and unfortunately, his reaction to the new addition hasn't been positive. This decision breaks my heart, but I know it's not his fault—he's simply never been around infants or young children. For the safety of my baby, I feel rehoming is the best option.

Reggie would thrive in a home without children or cats. While we currently have two cats, their relationship is tense, and he occasionally chases them. He does get along well with other dogs, provided introductions are slow and the other dog is not an intact male.

🐾 Pupdate on Tucker (formerly Rambo)! 🐾�Tucker has been with us for a while now, and he’s settled in as a loving and sweet member of our family. ❤️ He adores spending time with us and his doggy sister Georgia, and a select few others he’s grown to trust.�We’re so grateful for all the love he brings to our lives and are committed to giving him the safe, supportive environment he needs to thrive. We adopted Willie in 2020, and she’s been the absolute best addition to our family ever since. ❤️
She’s incredibly smart, so loving, and has us all wrapped around her paw. Willie brings so much joy to our lives—we honestly can’t imagine life without her.

"Helper is beloved. I have had her since a pup. DOB 7/30/2021 She easily learned basic commands but is still not fully house broken. She began killing chickens and geese over a year ago and Neither I nor my husband feel competent to correct her. I have dealt w and corrected chicken killing dogs years ago and think she can be corrected. I have tried training and have been unsuccessful with her.
She has never shown any aggression toward people, nor has she bitten. She grew up around cats and chickens. She has taken a wrong turn. When in the house she is still excellent with the cats, but I do not trust her unsupervised. She is of pure lineage from working dogs growing up around kids, chickens, cats, pigs etc.
She has become more than I can handle. She is a sweetheart to people, and I truly believe she can be corrected. But I have recently learned that this issue may make her more suitable for a herding job than a family dog. I do not have the knowledge to make that call. I hope to place her. She saw the vet August 20, 2024. At that time, she weighed 32 lbs., on the skinny side. We were feeding her a raw diet. the diet was changed to include more dry regular food, and she was wormed. She received rabies and DAPP annual vaccines at that time."

🐾 Abbie Update! 🐾
Hi friends! Just wanted to share a little pupdate on our sweet girl, Abbie. She’s living her best life—spoiled, loved, and soaking up all the attention! ❤️
Big news: Abbie is back in Texas, where she was born! Her family moved here last August, and she’s been loving the A/C life indoors (smart pup, right?).
Recently, Abbie had surgery for a torn CCL in her back knee. 🦴 She needed a plate put in, and we’re happy to report she’s 11 weeks post-op and doing AMAZING! 💪

"Hi there! My name is Fred and I am looking for a new home. I have been through a lot since August of this year. My beloved human passed away and I needed a place to go. I lived WAY far away-in Maryland! Friends of my human thought they should fly me to Washington state to be adopted by someone here. Unfortunately, that hasn't worked out too well. Turns out I'm not a fan of other dogs, cats or very young kids. So here I am, far from the home I once knew, in need of a new home where someone will commit to me for the rest of my life.As you can imagine, that long flight and so much loss has been hard on me. I can be anxious so I need someone who will be understanding and patient with me. I'm a very loving boy and I enjoy spending time with people. I am crate trained so when you leave, I will stay in my crate like a good boy. I just ask that you don't leave me in there for long hours-NO dog likes that! I can manage a few hours between potty breaks. I do bark so please keep that in mind. Right now I'm wearing this collar that buzzes when I bark. You may think "Oh he's OLD!" but I don't act it. I can play fetch like a youngster! Daily walks and time to exercise help not only my body but my mind too. I have loads of energy and can be a social butterfly when you take me out. I take a daily pill for my thyroid and eat special low fat dog food."

Sesame is a vibrant, happy, cuddly, loving, non-destructive ACD mix. She's petite at 37 lbs (just a few lbs overweight) and is sweet as Candy. I love this dog and adopted her but has found that she is having a hard time with anxiety. She isn't even slightly destructive (separation anxiet) and can lie quietly at my feet all day while I work from home. She has a very hard time taking walks but does very well in dog parks. She is a lovely houseguest, does well in social situations with others but is put off by walks, trucks, loud noises and has a tail ducking disposition. She has never nipped, harmed anything, become dominant (does ripping a sheet in the heat of fun time count as destructive?)! She is beautiful. I adore this dog and the only reason I'm considering rehoming is for her own mental, physical and long-term welfare. She just has a *very* hard time taking walks without fear.

I don't want to lose her cuddles, licks, attention and perfect behaviors but I don't want her to suffer. I'd like her ideally to have a large yard - only as she *is* active and was a former tennis glo-ball champion and great at off leash dog parks but now... she's a hermit.

It's very difficult to make this decision but I think she deserves her needs met, as a dog. I formerly worked with dog concepts for a living and have a very soft spot in my heart for dogs - my world."

We have had nearly 5 fantastic years of adventure with him across the Pacific Northwest but unfortunately our recent addition of two new babies (humans) to the "pack" has caused severe, unexpected anxiety for Bravo. We've sadly come to realize he might have a better life now with another family without these stressors. Bravo would do best in a home without children and where he can be outdoors and exercised (both physically and mentally) regularly. He's a fantastic agility dog for anyone looking to pick up the sport. We've included a video here and he would honestly be going twice as fast around the course if he wasn't waiting for me to keep up at 8mo pregnant! He's also an amazing side kick for any outdoor adventure and can pick up just about anything via training. He especially loves the beach and chasing sticks in the water. He has been regularly socialized with other dogs and even attended dog daycare for years without issue. However as he's gotten older he has become more anxious around some dogs, particularly high energy dogs and puppies. Although it breaks our heart, we hope to find Bravo a new home and loving family where he can live the happy and full life he truly deserves." Valentina is our curious little explorer, bringing joy and light wherever she goes. She does fantastically in her “spaceship” kennel overnight, rarely having potty accidents. This playful pup’s favorite mission? A game of tug-of-war, both with her human and canine friends. She also loves to chase toys — just don’t expect her to return them to your launch pad! Rosie Pupdate!

🐾 Pupdate on Rosie! 🐾 She is doing great! She and her brother Goose are great buds. We have also welcomed another daughter into our home and Rosie had shown a surprising motherly instinct, always wanting to be near the new baby. This video is of her and Goose enjoying our new space. They get a sunset walk every night and lots of play time.

Our Story

Pacific Northwest Cattle Dog Rescue is a non-profit organization based in Skagit County, Washington. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate & rehome cattle dogs and heelers from animal control groups, shelters and owner surrenders.

As a foster-based rescue organization, we rely on the generosity and dedication of our volunteer network. All of our dogs live in foster homes where they are part of the family until they find their forever home.

We offer courtesy listings across our social media to owners who wish to keep their dog during the rehoming process. Submit a courtesy listing request here. Owners interested in surrendering a heeler to PNWCDR can submit a questionnaire.

We seek to rehome cattle dogs coming out of states with a higher density of the breed, such as Texas and California. We are building partnerships with shelters, animals control groups and transporters across the west.
