Immediate opening. I have one spot available - can schedule others. I am able to take one green or young horse OR refresher for an older horse. I have LONG days & lots of wet saddle pads. Horses are exposed to large farm equipment, working with other horses & working alone, quiet cattle handling - cutting, sorting, pushing, etc., & roping. My immediate opening is for a horse that is already able to be rode, but I have spots for full starts in the next couple months. References upon request. Please DM me with questions or to discuss options.

This was ride #8. He is such a relaxed horse. Since this ride we have picked up the trot under saddle, stopping on the hind end, backing, and starting to move the shoulders. I cannot say enough good things about this horse.

As some of you may know, I took a break from training due to a shoulder dislocation accident. I have slowly returned to working with young and inexperienced horses. I am currently taking clients on again, but spots are limited.

The horse featured below is a 4 y/o gelding. He was very reactive and untrusting when we began. He had a major shoulder injury - we have that in common. I started with him in April working on desensitization and exposure. We worked through all kinds of sacking out, saddling and unsaddling, ground driving, ponying along side, standing tied (with horses and alone), and LOTS of work in the round pen. His shoulder injury has required alot of rehab to build what muscle is there to function as close to normal as possible. Currently he has 15 rides and continuing to make progress everyday.

Tie-downs need to be used so horses canโ€™t go too far past a balanced headset but not to set their heads to hold them completely. Horses need freedom to do their jobs and not be restricted the entire time theyโ€™re working. Itโ€™s easier on the horseโ€”just like everything youโ€™ll hear me sayโ€”to give them clear boundaries. Tie-downs are not built to push on the whole time. That being said, there are a lot of horses who have been subjected to a tight tie-down, and wherever you set their head, theyโ€™ll hit the end of it because of incorrect riding. If you have a horse like that, sometimes theyโ€™re set in their patterns. Thatโ€™s a bad habit thatโ€™s hard to break.โฃ

"Until you can walk, trot, canter AND gallop on a loose rein with direction and purpose collection is a JOKE. It's not collection, it's containment for an insecure rider. Containment and paranoia. It's pulling and holding and you're just calling it collection to sound noble." -Buck.

Balanced Nutrition is often overlooked in working horses. At JB Horsemanship this is a top priority. If the horse isn't getting what they need nutritionally how can I expect the horse to focus & perform well. I feed some of the best & consistent hay - 70/30 grass/alfalfa & 3rd cutting alfalfa (through the winter & for my seniors). I also feed Purina Horse Feed. I am currently feeding Strategy Healthy Edge, Active Senior, Amplify (High Fat Supplement), & Ultium.

Any horse I get in I spend time figuring what they will need nutritionally first. I'm able to adjust based on work load & life stage. I'm not just concerned about "training" - I want the horse to get the best. I am happy to continue feeding a current grain or hay, as long as it's meeting the horses needs. I'm happy to explain and help owners find a feeding program that fits their needs and budget. This is just one of the services that you get along with the training aspect.

Pictured is the 70/30 hay & Purina Active Senior with added Amplify.

I have availability in December & January. If your horse is needing a tune up or a job over the winter I'd love to talk with you about what we can do for your horse.

Some of you may remember "Pippa" from Colorado Horse Rescue Network & Colorado's Next Top Arab. I still have her & use her. She has been working at the local sale barn most weeks. This has been great exposure for her as well as very repetitive (great for her being older and still green). She is still available for adoption. Contact me for details.

"Don't ask the horse a question they don't already know the answer to."

This is a motto I have adopted when working all horses. I try not to move too fast. Lots of repetition. I do things over and over until it's no big deal. I only add new things that are similar to what we have already covered. I throw the saddle blanket hundreds of times before adding the saddle. Then same with saddle. Then same with mounting. I want things to be so routine and low stress the horse doesn't think twice.

Short video of Autumn getting tacked up. By the end of a horse's time with me one goal is to have a quiet & low stress tack up. It takes alot of repetition and patience on my end, but it pays off. Autumn was a very spooky horse to begin with, but she learned to be calm. It's the little things that you do consistently that become the big things.

Autumn & Midnight finished out 60 days with me and went home today. Older unstarted horses are more difficult than starting young ones, but these two made my job so rewarding. Their owners are pleased to have much different horses dropped off than the two I picked up a couple short months ago.

There are good horses, then there are GREAT horses. There is no horse I trust more than Miss April. She is so tolerant and willing. Last night she attended her first quinceanera. She stood in the parking lot for 2 hours quiet as can be while cars were coming and going, kids running around, music from inside the event hall, and all kinds of people with little to no horse experience walking up from all sides and touching her. Then she carried the birthday girl in full dress inside the event hall for the big entrance.. She's a trooper and has the best attitude. Video of the entrance to come... ๐Ÿ‘€

If you're ever looking for a horse to have at a party, for pictures, or even pony rides call us to book April. Costumes are available too!! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฆ„๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽ†

I had the opportunity to put some miles on a horse for a friend of mine at the sale barn yesterday. I've seen this horse work in a ranch setting and do very well, however this was much more stress and higher volume of cattle. It wasn't perfect, but who's horse is right?!

All I ask is that a horse continue to progress and give me some try. This little guy has got heart and try all day. Can't wait to watch him & his owner grow together.

09/11/2021

Got to ride this guy for the past week to get him ready for the sale today in Imperial, NE. He's a 6 y/o registered paint, has a great start on him & ready to take on his new job. Glad I got to be a part of his story.

"The only time you should look back is to see how far you've come."

This is my favorite part, the looking back at the progress. This horse was a challenge for me, but we really came so far. It's the baby steps, the little things, the day in day out work that never seems like it at the time, but when you look back you don't recognize the horse you started with because the horse you have now exceeded all your expectations. Thanks pal for carrying me for a while.

This guy has been a challenge but he keeps making huge strides of progress. He's going to make one heck of a ranch horse.

Some horses are made of sugar & spice & everything nice, some horses are NOT. This mare was a clients that never got over her spooking and flighty behaviors. She might not make it in the clients breeding program, but horses like this make you appreciate the good ones that much more.

"Heifer" (10 y/o mare) came to me for a tune up & training level evaluated. She is a new horse for her owner & her owner works a job that just doesn't leave the hours for consistent time with Heifer.

Heifer had a lot of "go" with the added challenge of being spooked easily. She went through a refresher on groundwork, manners, and the basics of riding. We worked to control the 5 parts of the horse - head&neck, poll, shoulders, ribcage, & hindquarters. We were then able to apply this to specific movements and maneuvers. The owner wants to use Heifer on barrels, which require so much control of the body, which she now has the foundation to build upon.

"Chip" is a working ranch horse that requires body work to keep him feeling good and ready for work. He is in his teens and due to the nature of ranch work he gets used pretty hard. I have been able to help Chip feel his best and enjoy his job again. Chip's owner understands that a horse is more than a tool, and invests in Chips overall wellness.
