I copied & pasted this important information, in case the original post goes away.

“People that call rehabs and are concerned whether or not they should bring the found fawn in can look at this. The very first question is look at the ears. Are they straight? Or are they crumpled?
If straight , was the deer laying down or standing up?
This year every deer we have taken in has looked like this. The ears are crumpled and the deer was standing up and crying.
The crumpled ear tips mean that the fawn is dehydrated and mom is gone.
The baby needs help!!!
🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌🦌
If you are EVER in question about whether or not you need to help the baby , this is the answer.
If you find one with these crumpled ears , get that baby help!
We always advise if you get the fawn and can’t get it to a rehabilitation facility right away, NEVER feed the fawn ANYTHING but unflavored pedialyte.

You can find local rehabbers at www.animalhelpnow.org just put in your zip code and click on the type of animal you have found.”

SURPRISING FACTS ABOUT FISHERS!

There is so much misinformation floating around about these guys, so we thought we would set the record straight!

Fishers belong to the weasel family. Technically, they are just called “Fishers” not “Fisher cats”. They are amazing hunters equipped with large paws, sharp claws and an impressive set of teeth.

They don’t get very large. Males tend to be between 8-16 pounds. Females are significantly smaller, weighing only 4-6 pounds. The largest fisher ever recorded weighed 20 lbs.

Many people will tell you they have blood curdling screams but, more likely than not, what they are hearing are foxes. Fishers are generally very quiet and, when they are vocal, it’s not quite as intense as the sounds foxes make.

We are often warned that they eat people’s cats. A study done in New Hampshire in 1979 tested the stomach contents of 1000 fishers. Only one tested positive for cat hair. Similar studies were done in New York and Massachusetts as well. Both of those studies did not find any trace of cats. That’s not to say they will not prey on cats. They certainly can but it’s not as common as many would think. Considering outdoor domestic cats have contributed to the extinction of over 60 songbird species, as well as some mammals and reptiles, the real concern when letting a cat outside should be the damage the cat will do to the wildlife - not the other way around. Cats are not indigenous to this area. What they do to our wildlife is not what nature intended.

Fishers are one of the only predators that hunt porcupines. They have developed techniques to avoid the quills. Though we LOVE porcupines here at the rescue, we respect Mother Nature and understand that every creature does what is necessary to survive out there.

Fishers can be very aggressive but attacks on humans are VERY RARE and generally only when provoked.

Fishers are hunted for their pelts (fur). In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fishers were virtually eliminated from the United States due to over trapping and deforestation. Restrictions helped their numbers to bounce back.

It’s uncommon to see one. They are elusive creatures. Though sometimes they are out during the day, they are mostly active at dawn and dusk. Most of the pictures you will find online will show them looking very mean and aggressive. These photos obviously get lots of attention. Though, these guys can certainly be aggressive at times, there is a lot more to them. That’s why it was important to me to circulate this photo.

They are magnificent creatures and probably one of the most misunderstood ones.

Why would we ask that people please, please not support horse racing? Because….
So far in 2024, there have been 79 Racehorses Killed at the various tracks around the country, and the season is just getting started. 79 unnecessary deaths and counting. 💔

You can love horses. You can love horseracing. You can’t love both.

I have always said that our dogs would prefer to be in their own home, even if that’s an apartment, and spend time with us when we’re home, over being left at a shelter.

👏👏👏
Dogs sleep around 14-16 hours a day so don’t feel bad because you work! We all do! They love us and don’t want to go to a shelter. Owner surrenders are the first to be euthanized since no one is looking for them. 🥲
Please keep your dog. 🙏🏻

I don’t like being sad, or making others sad, but this was written by a kind heart, and it NEEDS to be seen. Please take the time to read it, then please don’t ever say the words “ethical breeder” again. Every breeder knows, or should know, that innocent, healthy animals are put down every single day for simply not having homes, yet they keep bringing more lives into the world, some claiming it’s to “keep the breeds”. This is despicable, and only we humans can make it stop. We don’t need special breeds to exist. Animals need homes, period, and they don’t need more animals to be bred, born, and bought to take up even more space just so someone can have an animal who looks a certain way. Please make this stop. Adopt, DON’T shop!

Please keep reading. ⬇️

WRITTEN BY A VET:
“I have been writing this post in my head for nearly 3 years and until today I've never been brave enough to post it. But recently some people doing similar work and facing much the same reality have used social media to speak up about a topic that for so long has not been discussed. Their bravery has given me the courage to finally share my thoughts and experiences about something that I’ve needed to for so long.

Today I euthanized 5 dogs. This is not an uncommon task for a vet to perform and getting into the profession you are well aware of the fact that this is something you will have to do in your chosen career. However, the dogs I put down today were not sick, they were not injured, they were not old and they were not unhealthy in any way. They were not untamed and they were not aggressive. They were perfect, healthy and normal dogs. There was no reason for them to lose their lives today other than that they were failed by humans because of the current overpopulation crisis of domestic animals particularly dogs that so few people are prepared to accept and try to understand.

The euthanasia of healthy animals by animal welfare organisations and shelters across the world is something that we need to start talking about but it is not an easy topic for someone who is in this line of work to discuss. One, because how can you possibly put into words something that is so deeply personal and difficult to come to terms with in your own mind and two, how can you risk the possibility of losing such important funding that keeps welfare organisations and shelters alive by drawing attention to something that the public at large simply know very little about and so few people understand.

The dogs that I put down today were so excited to see me. How lucky they were to have someone in their kennel giving them attention and maybe just maybe they'd even be so lucky as to be taken out for a walk - their tails were wagging and everyone was jumping for joy. One of them was nervous and scared of me. This was a dog that had likely never had much in the way of attention or love from a human being. I have tried everything possible to make the task easier for myself and for those who assist me. I have tried doing it in their kennels, I’ve tried doing it on the grass outside so that the dogs can walk for a bit to experience one last bit of freedom and fresh air. I’ve fed them last meals, I’ve done it in the clinic and nothing makes it easier. The only thing that makes it bearable for me is to sedate them first so that they are sleeping when their lives end and not wagging their tails looking at me – I know this is a luxury that many other people doing this work do not have access to.

Today I chose to put them down in their kennels after I’d sedated them. Letting them leave on a bed and blanket that they have used for comfort for the past few weeks or sometimes even months. I take care to make sure that no other dog or animal is a witness but still the others around them must know. Usually the dogs bark endlessly at any small movement or sound but there is nothing more deafening than the silence of nearly one hundred dogs while ending the life of one of their neighbours or friends. They must know and I so often wonder if they are thinking if they are next or when their time will come.

In their final moments I tell each of them that I am sorry and for those who leave behind friends, puppies or siblings I promise them that I will take care of them and do my very best to find them homes or see that they are cared for properly. These are trivial words compared to what I should be saying to them but it’s hard to give them the apology they so deserve in the short time it takes for the life to leave their little bodies. What I should be saying to them is that I’m sorry you never got the opportunity to experience what it’s like to sleep on a couch and I’m sorry that those who did get to sleep on a couch once have ended up being unwanted and failed by the humans who took them into their homes in the first place. I’m so sorry that they were born into a world that didn’t have space for them and so many others. I’m sorry that they weren’t pretty enough or the right breed to be one of the chosen ones and I’m sorry that for months or for some of them nearly a year countless people walked past their cage and decided not to choose them or to leave and rather choose to buy a puppy somewhere else instead.

I have tried my best to cope with it as I know many others do too - by doing what I believe is everything humanly possible to find unwanted dogs and cats homes. I spend hours of my time holding them while they pose for photos, writing posts for Facebook, advertising them and putting their stories and personalities into words as best I can all in the hopes of someone deciding to choose them. I talk to people and encourage them to adopt but this does not always work. I have spayed until 10pm at night before because if I can just do one more spay it might help. Like so many others in this line of work, I have done hours of work behind the scenes and out of the public eye for no benefit other than hopefully having to euthanize one less healthy animal. I have done my fair share of adopting too having adopted 8 dogs and regularly contemplate whether I could take on another one or two despite my home already being near overrun.

But it is still not enough and the burden of this crisis and war that we are fighting against over population is not to be borne by only a small group of people across the world who are prepared to sacrifice so much because they are not ignorant to the reality of what is going on around them. It is something that everyone who has ever loved an animal has to accept as their fight too. Which is one of the reasons I am writing this post and have been trying to write it for so long.

Everyone has a way in which they can contribute to this fight and many are simple.
- Volunteer - spend time at a local animal shelter or organisation so you have a better understanding of what is happening out there. The animals in shelters love attention and walks even if it is only to make their time there more comfortable until it must come to an end.
- Donate if you can and especially towards sterilisation programs. We must stop these animals at their source – the more puppies and kittens we can prevent, the fewer healthy dogs need to be put down.
- Adopt if you are in a position to get a new pet. There is no reason to go out and buy a dog or cat when there are such perfect ones looking for homes. If everyone who could did choose to adopt, the world would be a much better place for it.

Thank you to those who continue to support me and my work especially through donations towards my sterilisation programs. Every donation that helps me do a spay gives me the strength to face another day and I have a lot of hope that we can change the world one spay at a time. I only wish to create more awareness about the crisis we are facing and I hope that those working in this line of work feel that my words here have done this important topic justice.

I do hope that in my lifetime I could live in a world where no healthy animal is euthanized due to lack of space, lack of homes or lack of resources available. I’m not sure if I will ever get to see that be a reality but I think we all know by now that I will never give up trying! “

The original post was taken down, so I’m replacing it with the content I saved.

“This time of year foxes will be reported as 'carrying cats away', what you'll most likely be seeing are mums moving their cubs.
If you see this then don't interrupt her or chase her to try and get her to drop what is in her mouth as she'll be moving her babies to a safer place.
Thank you to The Fox Project for the pictures 🙂”

FOSTER FOUND! 🎉

UPDATE! Foster found!! We did it! Thank you all!

If you’re interested in fostering please still fill out an application for the future. Fostering saves lives.

URGENT FOSTER NEEDED TO SAVE THIS MAMA (and babies) LIVES!! CONTACT Brighter Days Dog Rescue IF YOU CAN HELP!

This very pregnant, adorable little catahoula leopard has to find a foster before her time is up. She desperately needs out of the shelter ASAP and a safe place to have her babies.

Fostering a mama dog is a lot of work but SO worth it! The rescue will give lots of guidance and support, and can even provide food and supplies needed, as well as covering all necessary vetting. Mama will need a foster until she gives birth and 8-10 weeks after while her puppies are nursing, so it’s also a longer commitment…but again the time will fly by and it will be bittersweet to watch the little lives you helped save find their new forever homes.

Please share and tag friends! See the Brighter Days page for foster application! Let’s save some lives!

Copied from a friend...

Dogs are not pack animals, as much as the myth tries to perpetuates itself through our media.⠀

It’s important to understand this because this myth of dogs being pack animals sometimes leads to actions that can be harmful for our dogs. ⠀

For example:⠀
🔹 Making dogs go on large group “pack walks” where dogs are wearing aversive equipment and have no way of creating space from one another, and are therefore being flooded.⠀
🔹 Thinking we need to exert “dominance” or be the “alpha” by using aversive corrections, “alpha rolling”, and being intimidating when that actually just makes us look like a bully to our dog.⠀
🔹 Labels like “alpha” and “dominant” leads us to think that dogs behave the way they do for some higher purpose or to defy us and this causes us to use aversive methods and intimidate them to “put them in their place”.⠀

So, how should we think about our relationship with our dogs if we’re not a “pack”?⠀
🤝 You and your dog are a team that works together and understands each other the best you can without the need for threats.⠀
🤝 You and your dog are a family and as your family, you’ll help your dog feel safe and feel safe around you.⠀
🤝 You and your dog are sentient beings with your own needs and desires and you can absolutely work together to meet those needs and wants.⠀
🤝 You are a teacher and your dog is your learner and it’s on you to teach your dog what you’d like them to do and reward them for it every step of the way so they really learn what you want.⠀

It’s time for us to ditch this outdated theory and myth and really work towards a better, more understanding, and more compassionate relationship with our dog.

So important to know!

Many don't know this information! Remember every second matters during a choking incident. ❤ 🐕🐩🐶🦮🐕‍🦺
1. Place the dog on their back. Brace the back against the floor. Straddle the dog while adjusting yourself based on the size of the dog. Position the head in “in-line position” with the airway parallel to the floor.
2. Make an open diamond shape with your hands. Place your thumbs on either side of the trachea below the ball or object. Grip the “V” of the jaw using lip/cheek to protect fingers.
3. Push with a J-stroke down and out against the ball until it ejects from the mouth.
Both this method and the Heimlich method has been proven to work in these scenarios so don't hesitate to save your dog.

Please see how wrong this is, and don’t participate by buying down. This is so obviously cruel.

A lot of us are now starting to get real 'winter' weather 🥶❄
Before you buy a warm blanket or coat this season, remember that compassionate choices extend beyond just your food.
Avoid down/feathers in quilts, bedding, and coats.

"‘Harvesting’, also called ‘gathering’, is the removal of loose feathers by hand from a live duck/goose during moulting, which is the period when these birds naturally lose their feathers. Poor handling at this stage is likely to result in increased fear, stress and injury. It is also important to consider that, while the moulting season is influenced by the age, breed and genetics of the bird, moulting times can vary within a flock. This means that some birds that are not moulting at the time of ‘harvesting’ may be subject to ‘live-plucking’.

‘Live plucking’ occurs outside the moulting season and refers to manually pulling feathers that are still attached to the bird. This procedure is a major welfare concern as live plucking results in bleeding and tearing of skin, causing pain, discomfort and stress to the birds."

🚫 Myth: “Coyotes lure dogs back to their pack!”
✅ Fact: The false belief that coyotes intentionally lure dogs back to their packs is based on misunderstanding rather than scientific evidence.

We've all heard variations of the myth suggesting that cunning coyotes deliberately lure unsuspecting dogs back to their pack for an ambush. While coyotes are intelligent animals, there's no evidence to support the idea of premeditated luring.

Coyotes generally target smaller wild prey such as rodents and rabbits. Small dogs can sometimes be viewed as prey, underscoring the importance of never leaving them unattended outdoors. Larger dogs can be perceived as competition or threats, and coyotes will defend themselves and their families.

In many reported cases of dogs being “lured” by coyotes, it is often a result of the dog's own curiosity. Off-leash dogs may follow or investigate a coyote out of their own volition, which may cause the coyote to retreat closer to other family members for safety. If threatened, coyotes will defend their lives and their family against intruders, just like many other species.❗ Remember to never let companion animals approach wild animals or go off leash in wildlife habitat.

Coyotes, like most wild animals, want to avoid physical confrontation that could result in injuries—so they may engage in various intimidation tactics to prompt your dog to leave an area, such as bluff charges or displaying threatening body language. These "threat displays" aim to scare the dog away without resorting to physical contact. However, if the dog persists or confronts the coyote, the situation may escalate.

This is a post from another page. I didn’t share, in case it’s deleted later. It needs to be seen.

“Post from a local Beekeeper” 🐝

“Its late, and maybe in the morning I'll delete this post, but I've just got home and for now I need to write this down.
Earlier this evening I received a message from a home owner to say they had a swarm of bees in their hedge, but they were worried about them because children had been throwing water at them.
By the time my fellow beekeeper and I arrived, what had been a beautiful prime swarm was reduced to a few hundred drenched bees, huddling limply around their queen.
I've already deleted the photos of the puddles of water, the dripping wet hedge, and the many, many dead and dying bees that hadn't been able to escape the attack; sharing those pictures serves no purpose.
We gently placed the bees that had survived into a collection box, and hopefully tomorrow, when they've had chance to dry out and settle, we'll check on them and if necessary feed them; they'll be exhausted and possibly (understandably) defensive. They've been through a lot.
Please, please, help me to educate your children, your grandchildren, your neices and nephews, your neighbours, your colleagues and your friends that a swarm of bees isn't dangerous - they're amazing creatures that are just looking for a new home.
Please don't let anyone harm them. Just call a beekeeper who will gladly rehome them.
Please help me to spread this message and hopefully save any more bees from being unnecessarily harmed” 😢

Important for city AND country folks to know….

Important for city AND country folks to know….

“If I only knew what I know now, we would’ve just kept our cat inside” .... "You just don’t think it’s going to happen to you, and then it does.”

We get it. When I was in 4th grade our family cat was killed by 3 loose dogs. My daughter's cat (and the neighbors) were all killed by an owl. It is traumatic to lose a pet.

There are so many dangers out there. Cats and other unprotected pets are living as wildlife, therefore, they are subject to the rules of Nature. Like it or not, they are not special -- they are not even "yours" in the eyes of Nature. We can not put them in a bubble of self-entitlement. They are PREY if we allow them to be. We are not the victim in this; we are the cause.

We must stop blaming some wild species while we never blame the car that hit them.... We never call for owls to all be removed. We don't stand up against the rampant allowance of poisons... So it is not right, this emotional vendetta against coyotes when they aren't any more to blame than all the other causes are.

Take a breath. Grieve. Be angry...then be honest and be realistic in our expectations. Loose dogs still kill far more cats than coyotes do. Perspective matters. So does this fact:

The number of indoor cats killed by coyotes remains at ZERO.
