Indian River Community Cats is a volunteer
effort based in Indian River County Florida. We are a 501c3 organization as of 6/1/2016. Indian River Community Cats is here to help the community cats (feral cats, strays, etc.) of Indian River County and the people that care for them. We work closely with The Community Veterinary Clinic - to TNVR (Tag, Neuter, Vaccinate, Release) & help reduce the fera

l cat population. We are a proactive TNVR group with our goal being to help cats by reducing their breeding population via spay/neuter every. We are not a "rescue group" thus we do not "save" from the shelters and we do not do rescue, transporting or fostering -- although as individuals -- many of us do!

When a community cat is not suited for traditional adoption or when it is not safe to return them to the area where they were found, the best outcome is to relocate them as working cats. By relocating them to a barn, warehouse or other privately-owned areas where they are provided with proper shelter, food and water, they can live out their lives in a safe environment. Each cat is spayed/neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped and microchipped before relocation. Property owners are instructed on how to care for their working cat and provided the proper tools to make the relocation an easy transition. The cats in turn become the best organic pest/rodent control available. All adoption fees are waived. Please email [email protected] for more information.

It is with deep sadness that we at Dogs and Cats Forever have learned of the passing of our dear friend and benefactor Hal duPont, who died at his home in Vero Beach on February 23, after a lengthy illness. Throughout the last 14 years, Hal was a true friend to our shelter and supported us in various ways, both large and small. Hal’s first volunteer effort with Dogs and Cats Forever was rather inauspicious, as he dressed as Santa Claus for PetSmart’s “Pictures with Santa,” at the behest of his wife, Barbara, who had recently become our Adoption Coordinator at the Vero store. For the next few years, from time to time, Hal would visit Barbara at PetSmart to meet the new cats and occasionally adopt the ones who struck his fancy - most notably a senior pair named Thelma and Louise, who became the office cats at Hal’s business, duPONT/KRIEGHOFF Gun Company, in Vero Beach. Recognizing the need for the 150-plus cats at the shelter to not only have a comfortable place to live while they awaited adoption, but also to have a building that would showcase them to potential adopters, Hal proposed to finance the construction of a 3,100 square foot Cat Building which would be connected to the rear of the existing shelter building at 4600 Selvitz Road in Fort Pierce. The groundbreaking was held in 2014, and by 2015, the cats had happily moved into their new accommodations. Hal’s obituary, which appeared in the TC Palm this week, listed his many lifetime accomplishments – pilot, businessman, photographer, community leader, and more. But if you could ask the thousands of homeless cats who have resided and will pass through Dogs and Cats Forever’s Cat Building, they would add “Hero” to that list. Rest in peace, Hal... your two and four-footed friends will miss you.

Please let Jan or me know if you're willing to host a barn cat or kitties. They do best in pairs.

"Daisy" is a sleek and petite girl that deserves the love and nurture of a special person. She was rescued as a feral cat during a TNVR program. After she came back from the vet, she spent some time with a foster mommy who gained her trust. With the help of other cats in the household, Daisy learned that indoor life was much more comfortable than life in the woods of Gifford. She loves to be held or cuddled and will put her face on yours to show affection. This beautiful girl has short hair. (Her foster mommy would love to help acclimate her to a new home.) Please contact us if you have any questions for her.

Can you be a hero for Chip and Dale?

They are a pair of mature brothers whose owner can no longer care for them because of her health. They were adopted from Dogs & Cats Forever as youngsters and have been together all their lives. They are sweet, cuddly, charming, and playful. Unfortunately, soon they will be back at the shelter unless they can be adopted quickly.

Please call Andrea at 772-216-4109 to meet these handsome boys.
