The Monroe Low Cost Spay and Neuter Clinic is excited to announce a new heartworm preventative option!

By April, we will start offering the ProHeart 12-month injection for adult dogs. This is an injectable preventative option that lasts a full 12 months, eliminating the need for a monthly tablet or topical product to prevent heartworms. Your dog must be at least 12 months of age to qualify, and we do require a negative in-house heartworm test the day they receive the injection. Pricing for the injection will be dependent on your dog's weight.

As temperatures continue to climb, it is important to remember to never leave your pet in a hot vehicle, even for just a few minutes and even if the windows are cracked. According to Accuweather, even 60 degrees fahrenheit is too hot to leave a pet in the car. It's the first day of National Mosquito Control Awareness Week. Besides causing itchy bites, mosquitoes can carry an abundance of diseases that can make both people and animals sick. Common mosquito-borne illnesses in animals include heartworm in dogs, and West Nile Virus (WNV) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in horses. It's important to have dogs and horses vaccinated against these illnesses, especially during this time of the year.

It's the perfect time of year for a trip to the beach. If you're bringing your pet along, remember to provide your pet with plenty of fresh water, apply sunscreen and watch for heatstroke. Most North Carolina beaches only allow non-service animals on the beach during restricted hours (before 9:00 a.m. and after 5:00 p.m.) from April 1 through September 30.

I will never forget how this sweet boy fell asleep in his tub of chocolate ice cream! Thank you Scacchetti family for such a beautiful send off for your handsome fella...
Unfortunately many times our babies don't have a good appetite before they pass, but if they do- their favorite foods or the forbidden foods (like chocolate ice cream) are a great way to help them pass from this world doing what they love, eating!!

I consider it such an honor to help guide and assist families through such a difficult time.
