Hello everyone, I am sorry for not posting for quite some time. My father was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer) and we have been seeing different doctors for a second opinion and looking at options on a care plan while just overall trying to manage our feelings and adjust to constant life style changes. On a positive note here is one sweet little nugget to hopefully make your days brighter. πŸ’—

Topic of the day: Female Spiders and Egg Sacs πŸ•·οΈπŸ₯š

All female spiders whether they were Paired (Gravid) or not will at some point during maturity lay egg sacs. WC (Wild caught) Females have a high chance of already being gravid if found mature and many times it will be difficult to tell until one day you see babies popping out of the egg sac. Sometimes there will be people who will claim that the spiders they are offering are CB (Captive BrΓ«d) when they are actually WC.

I have seen a lot of people in our community who have Γ dΓ³ptΓ©d gravid females without knowing and then are left with the hard decision of having to exchange/get rid of their spoods they bonded with or decide to take on that sac of babies without the knowledge that mama can lay up to 5 sacs her whole life span. Each sac can have up to 300 slings. (Please note that this is more in reference to P.Regius and P.Audax. Others might lay more or less eggs on average.)

✨Please✨ try your best to do your due diligence and ask as many questions as you can. Granted people can always lie, but at least you know you did your best and sometimes you can wééd out those who are lying based on their responses/body language. Also research as much as you can on the person you are thinking of Ñdáptíñg from.

Thank you for taking the time to read and have a wonderful night/day. πŸ’—

I came home to a wonderful surprise, Nilah has laid an egg sac! Now we wait in hopes that it is viable. Even though she has been paired sometimes a mother might eat a sac if it is infertile or if something seems off. Mama knows best. πŸ’—πŸ€žπŸ’—

Good morning everyone, let's chat about an important topic in jumping spider care called molting.

Molting: The developmental process where invertebrates shed their exoskeleton and is then replaced by a larger one.

There are 3 stages of the Molting process:

1. Pre-molt
2. Molt
3. Post-molt

Pre-Molt : During this time your spood will continue to eat and rest and behave normally until they have stored enough energy in order to start their molting process. Once they are ready they will build either a new thicker hammock (bed) or will add on to their already existing one. After feeling satisfied with their new hammock setup they will rest inside until they have completed their molt and then rest for a few days during post molt.

Molting: Out with the old in with the new!
The actual process of molting for your spood is way shorter than the pre-molting process. It takes an average time of 20-30 minutes. Depending on the species and the individuals situation, it can take up to an hour for the completion of a molt.

Post- molt: After shedding the old exoskeleton, their new exoskeleton is still too soft and leaves them vulnerable for a couple of days. (This includes their fangs which is why feeding right after a molt is not recommended and having a feeder in their home can cause more stress or possible injury to your spood.)

The process of molting overall is stressful and is one of the main causes of death to spoods. However, there are a few things you can do to help make them more comfortable during this process.

1. Mist their enclosure 2x times a day instead of 1x time to help increase humidity. Depending on where you live, the air might be too dry and in some situations you might have a harder time maintaining a decent level of humidity. If this is the case I would recommend getting a humidifier. ( PLEASE purchase a hydrometer if you do not already have one, it is essential to helping you maintain the correct humidity.)

2. Try your best to stay calm and avoid the urge to tap, move or constantly attempt to peak in their hammock during their molting process. They will be very still during this time frame and I know it is scary because it can appear as though they are dead. Many of my spoods will move a bit during a mist so if you are unsure pay special attention to look for movement then.

I hope this helped clear up any confusion or worry you all might have had. Have a wonderful day spood mamas and dads. πŸ•·οΈ

Here I will post two typical hammock images from my sassy girl sub adult Ember(right photos) and another of my sweet girl Penelope inside her molting hammock with her old molt (left). Sometimes you might have a baby who doesn't make a very thick hammock.

Wishing everyone and their families a beautiful day together that is full of laughter and joy.God bless.πŸŽ„πŸ‘ͺπŸ’•
