It’s crucial to get outdoor pets ready for the impending cold snap next week! Highs in the 30's and lows in the teens are coming!
BRING THEM INSIDE: The best option is to keep all pets indoors. However, if they must stay outside, ensure they have adequate protection from the harsh cold. Breeds like Huskies are equipped to handle winter thanks to their thick double coats, which provide insulation. On the other hand, dogs like Pit mixes, with their thinner coats and exposed undersides, are more susceptible to the cold and should either be brought inside or given insulated shelter. Puppies and older, frail, or sick dogs are particularly at risk in cold weather and require additional protection.
PROVIDE SHELTER: When temperatures drop below 45 degrees, having access to an insulated doghouse, garage, or shed can help keep your dog warm. Dogs that are used to living indoors or in milder climates should not be left outside during freezing conditions. Make sure the shelter is readily accessible, as you may not be home when the temperatures plummet.
INSULATE SHELTER: While a plastic or wooden doghouse can shield them from wind, it won't keep them warm without proper insulation. Use straw bedding—not hay—to insulate outdoor shelters. If you’re using straw to insulate a doghouse, it should be packed tightly along the sides and back. The dog should be able to burrow down into the straw for warmth. Bales of straw typically cost $10 or less at local feed stores and can fill 3-4 doghouses.

Denise wanted to remind everyone that it is going to be super cold tonight. There are 2 bags of straw at the front door of the shelter. Please come take one for insulation if your pet will be housed outside in these freezing temps.

UPDATE: Dreamer has officially found rescue placement with Carver Scott Humane Society. Thank you for your continued support to help save her! Please honor your pledges here: https://www.carverscotths.org/donate

Dreamer is now considered VERY urgent due to severe kennel stress and is no longer a candidate for public adoption - she can only leave the shelter with a rescue partner. Dreamer's deadline has been moved to TOMORROW, Friday, January 3. Please share and help us advocate for this sweet girl.

She is quickly deteriorating in the shelter environment and is frantic in her kennel, hyper fixating on toys, and bleeding from her paws due to pacing. She is no longer eligible for adoption from MACC because she needs a firm decompression period to settle in and recover from such high levels of kennel stress. Dreamer needs rescue commitment by tomorrow at 4pm and needs to leave the shelter by Saturday, January 4, no later than 2:30pm or she will be humanely euthanized.

Dreamer is a 3 y/o intact female Pit Bull/ Great Dane. She was surrendered to the shelter along with another dog on 12/4 due to her owner experiencing homelessness. Both dogs seem under-socialized and have some stranger danger. Dreamer has been very stressed in the kennel since arriving – alarm barking, pacing, painting, etc. She has worn her nails down to the point that they bleed and also has happy tail. Sadly earlier last week she was bit on the nose by another dog and was moved to a quieter ward – which helped her a bit.

Here is what we know about Dreamer:
- Described as a “total doll”
- Friendly, plays fetch nicely
- Can be shy/reserved but quickly warms up to people she’s met before
- In one playgroup appeared to be dog selective. Watch her in playgroups here: https://bit.ly/3DIpZbG
- Playful and loves soft toys
- Easy to leash/unleash in the kennel
- Strong on the leash & could use some leash training
- Has gotten a little worked up and mouthy on a few occasions but was easy to redirect
- Very independent outside in the run but recalls well when called
- Recommend a home without small children due to stranger danger behaviors

If you are affiliated with a rescue partner and wish to foster Dreamer, please reach out to your intake coordinator. Otherwise, please send us a message if you are willing to foster her with a rescue partner. If you are unable to foster, please pledge below and/or share this post!

Something to think about today!
The silent suffering of bunnies and guinea pigs 😔
When I joined this family three years ago, I was allowed to jump around in an open enclosure in the summer and was even brought into the house more often.
I was given fresh food every day, and clean water. Also, my hutch was regularly cleaned.
Having to live alone in my hutch was always lonely and boring, when I was with my mother and siblings there was always something going on but the child of the family would come a pet me.
Now the child is 12 and thinks I’m boring.
He would rather have a now ... 🐕
So I've been sitting in my dirty hutch all alone for ages now!
If I'm lucky, once a day the door opens and someone remembers to give me
pellets where I prefer greens a lot.
Sometimes I get a carrot or some dandelion it makes me really happy.
My water is often inedible because it is not changed for days on end.
I'm drowning in my own dirt so to speak!
In the winter I freeze because no one bothers to carry my cage into the basement like they used to.
Besides, I am often very thirsty, but my water bottle is frozen and my people don't see it.
When it rains I sit in the back corner of my hutch because no one cares that it leeks when it rains.
Then I squat in the wet mess and feel terribly uncomfortable.
I'm having diarrhea, my butt is covered with poo.
My people think this is disgusting but so do I !
I have a stomach ache and feet have sores on them from having to sit on wet filth because my hutch is rarely cleaned these days. A vet could surely help but that costs money .
But I'm just a 🐇
In the summer, it’s unbearably hot in here but I look outside and see a beautiful garden, with juicy grass, and there are sooo many delicious daisies and wish I could enjoy all this.
I feel unwell and my joins are so stiff from having to sit in a small space all the time, I long to be able to run and jump and play.
Again and again I envy the that sneak through the yard and don't have to sit in a small jail.
Then I picture myself jumping across the meadow and playing with other rabbits.
I sometimes just wish I could vent like this I can barely move in my dirty prison 😔
Unfortunately, I can't make my people understand how sad I am. They don't understand my languages and they don't see my tears!
What did I do to be treated this way!?
I was always sweet, always let everything go over me, never scratched or even bit!
Why don't they at least take me to an animal shelter, maybe I'd find a friend and a nicer family
I don't know how much longer I can handle this long lonely uncomfortable existence and I am becoming very depressed.
I could still live for many many more years!
I hope for a life after death, a life without people locking me in a cage, a life with huge meadows, and many peers.
With fresh green food and clean drinking water!
And so I continue to suffer silently because people have lost interest in me and don’t understand my language and don't see my tears!
So I have to pass away first to be able to live 😔
Don't look away and give us a voice! A hutch is never enough!

🐾 Meet Jack: The Sweet Boy Still Waiting for His Miracle 🐾

Jack, we’re so sorry you’ve been let down over and over again. All of your furends have found fosters or adopters, and yet, you’ve been left behind, completely overlooked. 😣

We tried so hard to get you into a home for the holidays, but the stars just didn’t align. 💔

Multiple people have reached out to foster you, only to go silent when we follow up. And that meet-and-greet we were so hopeful about? They walked out the door without you and didn’t look back while you tried to chase after them while crying, wishing you would go with them. Our hearts broke for you that day 💔.

You are so good, Jack. So sweet. So perfect. We just can’t understand why others cant see what we see in you.

Jack is truly an amazing boy with so much love to give. He’s smart, playful, and incredibly loyal. He’s dog-friendly, people-friendly, cat friendly, crate-trained, potty trained and walks beautifully on a leash.

He’s been waiting so patiently for his chance at love, and we KNOW the right family is out there for him.

Jack is available to foster or adopt! Right now, he’s in boarding, which is no place for a dog like Jack. He deserves a warm bed, a loving family, and a home where he’ll never feel forgotten again. 🙏🏼

Please, help us find Jack his Furever. Share his story, reach out to us, and let’s make 2025 the year Jack finally gets the love he’s been waiting for. ❤️

📍 Currently in boarding in NC. Available to foster or adopt in NC only.

Update: adopted!

🩶Coal🖤

Coal is a very sweet, smart boy. He showed up as a stray in a local family's yard. They brought him to the shelter in hopes he would be microchipped or have any owner looking for him. An owner has not come forward.

Coal is very smart. He knows how to sit and shake. He also does well on a leash. Coal is not neutered, but he will be upon adoption. Coal is heartworm negative, as well.

If you are interested in adopting Coal, please contact the shelter at 252-492-3136 or email [email protected].
