Today is Betty White’s birthday. She was a pet enthusiast and animal welfare advocate, who worked with organizations including the Los Angeles Zoo Commission, The Morris Animal Foundation, African Wildlife Foundation, and Actors and Others for Animals.

Today, she would have turned 100 years young, but she was taken away from this world earlier this month.

In Betty’s honor, animal welfare organizations are asking other advocates and other people who adored Betty to make a donation of $5 or any amount to an animal welfare nonprofit. If you’d like to donate to HEART, we kindly accept and appreciate your generosity to further animal welfare advocacy.

Asher has officially been in foster care for 5 months as of December 30, 2021 with Hendricks County Humane Society. Asher was found at a community cat colony with over 100 other cats. He was easy to catch because he was so sick he could not run away. After numerous vet visits, treatments, and a consultation with a specialty veterinarian, Hendricks County Humane Society finally knows why Asher has never been able to breathe properly. He has a polyp which extends from behind his soft palate up into his left ear. The surgery to remove this polyp is specialized and requires a surgeon with special instruments. Hendricks County Humane Society is working on raising funds ($3,600) to cover the cost of the surgery to give Asher a chance at a normal life, where he can run and play like a 6-month-old kitten should be able to do. Asher deserves to find his way to his forever home!

On behalf of our donors, we sent $500 to Hendricks County Humane Society to assist with Asher's treatment.

Hendricks County Humane Society is still in need of more donations. If you would like to help, please visit their page and SMASH that Donate button!

Everyone, please meet Max. His owner reached out to Ambassadors for God's Creatures, asking for help. Max's brother (an 80 pound dog) attacked him when the two went for a bone and he got ahold of his leg, breaking his knee. Shortly after the incident, Max was seen by the vet, and was told he would need surgery. The owner also decided Max needs to be rehomed, since she realizes she cannot keep the two dogs in the home together. The other dog has been with her longer, so she believes it is best to rehome Max.

Ambassadors for God's Creatures agreed to take Max under their care and help find a new home for him.

On behalf of our donors, we sent $500 to Ambassadors for God's Creatures to assist with the surgery. Max received the required surgery to give him back quality of life. He is now a thriving tri-pod.

Max is a one-year-old heeler/mountain dog mix, neutered, very sweet, and weighs 24 lbs. He is very playful and active. Ambassadors for God's Creatures is in need of a foster home or adopter for Max. Max is good with kids and cats. He does seem to have some lingering trauma when around other dogs. He is a bit intimidated by other dogs and would do best in a one-dog home. Please contact Ambassadors for God's Creatures if you are interested in fostering or adopting Max.

June is Adopt-A-Cat Month!!!

We recognize this holiday in June at the height of "kitten season". What is kitten season?

"The term “kitten season” sounds like something out of a children’s book ― a magical time when tiny purring fur-balls sprout like blossoms beneath rainbows in dew-kissed meadows. But to animal rescuers and shelters, the mere mention of it can make them snap to attention and double-check their preparations, like emergency teams bracing for a massive hurricane. While big-eyed baby cats are irresistibly cute, thousands of them can roll in all at once, making kitten season the most challenging time of the year in shelters around the country.

In most places across America, animals mate and give birth in spring. This phenomenon can be attributed to a variety of factors, such as longer days, better weather and more access to food, which means higher survival rates for the offspring of many species. Unlike other animals, though, cats can keep on reproducing, having litter after litter right up until the weather turns cold again. In many regions, kitten season can last from spring until early winter." - Best Friends Animal Society

If you're looking for a kitty to snuggle, check out your shelters and rescues TODAY! Don't just get 1, get 2, so they have a buddy!

Now, listen to this message from Sheriff Judd from Polk County, Florida. Kitten season happens everywhere, not just Indiana.

We want to send a HUGE THANK YOU to all of our supporters who purchased or shared our flower fundraiser! Yesterday, we received a check from FlowerPower for $430!!!

You all are AMAZING!!!

During the pandemic, we've had to think outside the box on different ways to raise funds for medical-needs animals in our shelters and rescues. Our mission this year is to help 21 rescues in 2021. We typically send $500 to a rescue for an animal in need, so that means we have to raise $10,500 to meet our goal this year! Because of YOU, we are on track to meet our goal. We already sent out a total of $3,500 to 7 rescues, and we're getting ready to send out another check in the next few days.

Again, THANK YOU from the bottom of our ❤️

2021 Donation Recipient #7

Gus was an emergency pull by Sketchy Mutts and Underdogs from Indianapolis Animal Care Services for a foreign body obstruction. Gus underwent surgery that went well, and he was released after recovery. The rescue reports Gus is doing well! Once he makes a full recovery and receives any additional vetting, he'll be ready for adoption. Isn't he a adorable?

On behalf of our donors, we mailed a check for $500 to Sketchy Mutts and Underdogs to assist with Gus’s medical bills.

Get well soon, Gus! Thank you, Sketchy Mutts and Underdogs, for responding to the plea for help.

It's National Scoop the P**p Week!

Not only does dog p**p threaten native wildlife, it can also threaten other dogs and humans. Dog p**p can contain hundreds of thousands of bacteria. Whether it’s eaten by another pet or drank through filtered water, parasites and bacteria can infect both your pets and other humans.

There are a variety ways to pick up doggie doo. You can even purchase dog p**p bags. Even though we recognize this pet holiday one week out of the year, it's important to pick up the dog doo all year around.

Read some great information from Connie on what to watch for when your pet is stressed and how to respond.

Listening to your dog means you can avoid serious conflict issues down the road.

I just got an email from a person whose dog bit him when he pointed at the dog's food bowl and gave the dog a cue to eat the food. He thought he was helping as the dog is a picky eater, but in reality the dog is worried about people being near its food so when the finger pointing and commands came out; the dog felt even more threatened and decided to bite.

Obviously, your dog does not speak a verbal language but he is constantly communicating. I was reminded of this yesterday when I bent down to pick up my 11-year old chihuahua mix, Harley. Harley wants to snuggle into my side when I work from home, but he has a hard time jumping up into the chair now that he is older. If I see Harley struggling to get into the chair I often bend over to pick him up.

He obviously wants in the chair so he wants me to pick him up right?

Maybe not. Yesterday I noticed Harley back up, turn his head away from my hands and do a big yawn. He then flicked his tongue out of his mouth a few times. All of these can be a way for a dog to indicate he is stressed, anxious, conflicted, (insert a word) but bottom line is Harley was telling me something about me bending over to pick him up was making him unhappy.

What's the deal? He needs me to pick him up; he loves snuggling into me when I work from home; so I just need to pick him up right?

Wrong. I need to listen to Harley. He is older. He has a bad back knee and he has allergies and I know he has a skin irritation under one of his front legs. Maybe I was picking him up in a way that was hurting something I didn't realize. Just because Harley wants to be in my lap doesn't mean I get to force something that is making him uncomfortable.

I sat back in my chair and Harley faced me. He stopped yawning and licking. I bent down and put my hands down a few inches in front of Harley. He didn't move, so I sat back in my chair; waited a few seconds and did it again. I did this until Harley moved forward on his own and touched my hands. Then I was more careful in the way I picked him up.

I did this all day yesterday (we get in and out of the chair a lot). By the end of the day Harley had learned I would not pick him up unless he moved toward me when my hands were outstretched. No more just reaching out and grabbing him.

This took me a few extra minutes in the beginning but today as soon as I put my hands down he walks right into them. I am also being more careful how I pick him up.

Our dogs are always communicating with us. It is up to us to take a moment and hear what they have to say.

Rain was pulled from Indianapolis Animal Care Services and placed in People United 4 Pets Rescue to receive medical treatment. However, the rescue had no idea what was ahead. Originally, it was thought that Rain just had a GI issue. That turned into septicemia , internal bleeding, and a perforated stomach.

Rain went in for surgery and has a long road to recovery with medical bills mounting. On behalf of our donors, we sent $500 to People United 4 Pets Rescue to help offset some of the expenses.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We could not help the cats and dogs in Indiana without your compassion and generosity.

Today, we announce #5.

Frenchie was found after having been hit by a car. Indianapolis Animal Care Services took x-rays and found a vertebral fracture at L7. She made some progress in the few days she was there and readily walk when prompted. She was knuckling on the right pelvic leg and still very wobbly on both legs. She was considered URGENT and in need of rescue ASAP! Because of this, we pledged $500 to get her out of the shelter and into a rescue where she could receive treatment.

Humane Society for Hamilton County (Indiana) had the x-rays reviewed and it was determined Frenchie did not need surgery, after all. It's no secret HSHC has recently transferred a lot of dogs from IACS to HSHC. Even though Frenchie no longer needed the $500 pledge, we decided we would make a donation to the Survivor Program at HSHC on Frenchie's behalf.

Get well soon, Frenchie! Thank you HSHC!

Today, we announce #4 Lucci’s House Bully Rescue. Apollo arrived at Indianapolis Animal Care Services as an owner surrender with some skin issues and heartworm positive. These medical needs currently make him unadoptable. Lucci's was able to secure a foster home for Apollo, while he receives the medical treatment he needs to move him to an adoptable status. Lucci's reports Apollo is a sweetheart. On behalf of our donors, we sent Lucci's a $500 donation to help offset expenses for Apollo.

Get well soon, Apollo! There's a whole lot of people rooting for you! Thank you, Lucci's!
