Have you thought about feeding a raw diet to your ferret? You may be interested to learn that both the CDC and American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) discourage feeding raw meat to pets!
Though these diets have gained popularity for several proposed benefits, there are no published peer-reviewed studies that exist to support these claims. In fact, the The American College of Veterinary Nutritionists (ACVN) reports that no studies have examined differences in animals fed raw animal products to those fed any other type of diet (kibble, canned, or home cooked) with the exception of looking at the effects on digestibility. Due to the risk of nutritional imbalances (which is a reality for both home-prepared and commercial raw meat diets) and possibility of bacterial or parasitic contamination, these diets are not recommended. Instead look for a commercial ferret diet that is made with primarily meat, little-to-no grain or vegetable protein, and no sugar. We recommend the Oxbow Ferret food and you can pick up a bag next time you're in the clinic! Oxbow also recently released nutritious and yummy meat based treats specifically made for ferrets 🦎

Is your guinea pig getting enough Vitamin C?! Most high quality guinea pig foods are supplemented with vitamin C, but the vitamin can easily degrade if food is older, exposed to light, or not stored properly. We recommend Oxbow guinea pig food, which has a special stabilized long lasting vitamin C. You can also increase vitamin C consumption by offering bell peppers (especially red, orange, and yellow ones), kale, and parsley. Contrary to popular belief, citrus fruit actually has less vitamin C and more sugar than recommended. Ask about picking up a bag of Oxbow guinea pig food or Oxbow Vitamin C supplements at your next visit! 🍊🦎

Have you heard of a "Veterinary Care Desert"? Similar to a "food desert", the term refers to areas that have limited (or no) access to high quality veterinary care. Unfortunately, this is something we are all too familiar with in the exotic veterinary world! Our very own Dr. Lennox dives into this issue and how non-speciality clinics can help exotic patients in need: https://www.aaha.org/trends-magazine/july-2024/exotic-pet-care-deserts/ 🦎

George, a big brown bat, was brought in initially with an injury to his right wing. When the wing did not heal after a couple weeks of medical therapy, a partial amputation was performed! Although George cannot be released back into the wild due to his inability to fly, he is still thriving, enjoying eating his bugs and spending time with other bats. He will become an educational ambassador to teach people about bats and their role in the ecosystem! πŸ¦‡πŸ¦Ž

Lizards love to eat bugs! Unfortunately some lizard/bug combinations are not good - especially Bearded Dragons and lightning bugs. Many of our native reptiles and amphibians can eat lightning bugs with no problem, but these are lethal to non-native Bearded Dragons. Even one can be fatal. Please be sure your dragons don't encounter lightning bugs if venturing outdoors, and never collect them to feed. If you think your bearded dragon may have eaten one, call right away! 🦎
