🐾 Pisan is hard at work mastering his "Secret Signal," a behavior that can make a big difference for his future person! 🐕✨

This clever skill allows Pisan to help his handler gracefully exit social situations. With a discreet hand signal, Pisan will place his paw on their leg, giving them the perfect excuse to step away: "Oh, sorry, my dog needs to go out and potty." Subtle, practical, and so helpful! 💡

At Medical Mutts, we often use platforms or targets to teach new skills. In this training session, Anne is helping Pisan learn to place his paw on a small platform as the first step. Pisan, a 2-year-old Shepherd mix selected from Young Williams Animal Center, is showing just how amazing rescue dogs can be. 💙

Let’s give him a paw-sitive cheer for his dedication and progress! 🐾👏

📸 Meet Ryan, a 2-year-old Husky-Shepherd mix selected from LifeLine Animal Project, working hard in his service dog training with Jordan! 🐾

In these photos, Ryan is learning the command "Touch," a foundational behavior that lays the groundwork for many advanced skills. From object retrieval and pressing alert buttons to poking for alerts and repositioning, "Touch" is an essential step in Ryan’s journey to becoming a service dog.

Not only is this behavior practical, but it also allows trainers and handlers to guide dogs without physical manipulation, ensuring comfort and trust. 💙

Ryan is still in the early stages of his training and has a long way to go, but he’s off to an amazing start! Let's cheer him on as he continues to grow and learn. 🐕✨

🐾 Exciting News: Welcome to Our New Recruits! 🐾

Yesterday, we welcomed 4 amazing dogs—Sallie, Canyon, Bronwyn, and Chips—from in TN! 🐶 These new arrivals will begin their journey toward possibly becoming life-changing service dogs.

We’re incredibly grateful to Young-Williams for not only helping us find these wonderful dogs but also driving them to us—thank you for your partnership and support! 💙

At Medical Mutts, all our dogs are selected from rescues and shelters in Indiana and surrounding states. We carefully choose dogs that are:
✔️ 1-2 years old
✔️ Very social with people and other dogs
✔️ Highly adaptable, so they can thrive in public environments
✔️ Food-motivated, making them eager to train

We don’t take puppies because temperament can change during adolescence, and without their history or background, the chances of them not completing the program are much higher. No testing can fully predict a dog’s suitability for service work—only time, training, and exposure can.

💡 Did you know? Only 1 in 4 dogs that join our program will become service dogs. Those who don’t pass are adopted into loving homes, where they can enjoy a life suited to their personality and strengths. Just like people, dogs are unique, and certain temperament traits are essential for service work.

Training and socialization are key, but a dog’s natural temperament makes all the difference. For more information about our service dog program, visit https://www.medicalmutts.org/.

Let’s give a warm welcome to Sallie, Canyon, Bronwyn, and Chips as they start this incredible journey! 🎉🐾

🐾 Training Tip Tuesday 🐾

Want your dog to feel confident in new places? Here's how to help them adjust with ease:

🌟 Start Small: Begin with calm, quiet locations and gradually work up to busier spots.
🌟 Reward the Calm: Bring treats to reward your dog for staying relaxed. Positive reinforcement is key!
🌟 Keep It Fun: Make outings enjoyable by associating new places with praise, play, and good vibes.
🌟 Watch for Stress: Going out in public can be one of the most challenging things for a dog. While we might assume they'll eventually get used to it, overexposure can backfire, making them more fearful. Look for signs of stress—panting, whining, or hiding—and take breaks as needed. Be willing to leave at any time.
🌟 Know Your Dog: Every dog is different. Some adjust and thrive, while others may feel overwhelmed. Respect their limits—continuous exposure can do more harm than good for dogs who are struggling.

🐕 Not All Dogs Can Be Service Dogs: Public access is tough, even with training. Some dogs, despite all our efforts, just aren’t comfortable navigating public spaces. That’s okay! It doesn’t mean they’re not amazing—it just means service dog work isn’t the right fit for them.

🌟 Practice Makes Perfect: Regular short trips to new places can build confidence—just go at your dog’s pace.

🌟 Team Update: Alicen and Maisie 🌟

We couldn’t be prouder of the incredible bond between Alicen and her psychiatric service dog, Maisie! Here’s what Alicen shared about their journey together:

*"Maisie has been doing great! We went to the family Christmas party, and she did excellent! She even stood in front of me to help me feel safer, without me telling her to. She helped me so much—she stayed on my lap and kept me calm the whole time. For the first time, I didn’t have to leave the house and sit in the car, shaking and feeling like a seizure was coming on.

Another amazing thing Maisie did: I must have had a seizure while Larry and Ben had left to go uptown, and I was still sleeping. When Larry got home, she jumped over the gate and wouldn’t leave him alone, jumping in his face. She then jumped back over the gate, acting weird, so Larry came to check on me. I wasn’t coherent. He gave me a rescue med and stayed with me until I fully woke up.

We bond closer and closer every day. She’s made such a difference in my life. I can’t thank you and your staff enough!"*

Maisie is an incredible example of how service dogs change lives. Thank you, Alicen, for sharing your story and for allowing us to be part of your journey! 🐾💙

🐾 Training Tuesday Tip! 🐾

Today’s tip is all about back chaining – a powerful training technique we use to teach behaviors step by step! For example, when teaching a dog to retrieve, we start with the last behavior: placing the object in the handler’s hand. Once the dog masters that, we gradually add criteria like picking the object up from the floor at increasing distances.

This method helps dogs understand the final goal and build confidence as they work backwards to learn each step! 💡

Watch Jet and Jordan in action as Jet practices his retrieve! 🐕💙

🐾 Meet Miles (formerly Willis), who’s making great strides in his training! In these pictures, Jordan is helping Miles feel more comfortable with the crate. Each time Miles goes in and out of the crate, he gets rewarded with praise and treats! This simple yet powerful training technique helps him build confidence and creates positive associations with the crate through repetition. 💙 We're so proud of Miles’ progress and can't wait to see him continue to thrive!

🎉🐾 Join Us for an Adoption Event This Saturday! 🐾🎉

Looking for your perfect furry companion? Come meet our amazing adoptable dogs this Saturday, December 28th, from 10:00 AM to Noon at our facility:
📍 6120 Allisonville Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46220

Meet our stars:
✨ Clifford: Our longest resident! This sweet 4-year-old mixed breed loves toys, snuggles, and walks. He’s been waiting for over a year for his forever home and would love to be your one and only! Adoption fee: $100 (normally $300).
✨ Shelagh: A 1-year-old Collie mix with a love for snuggles, toys, and fetch. Perfect for families and ready to go with the flow!
✨ Mr. Steal Ya Girl: A playful 3-year-old Lab mix who dreams of being the center of attention. Loves tug and toys and is ready to steal your heart!
✨ Bluebell: A spunky and affectionate 1.5-year-old mixed breed with a striking brindle coat. She’s an athletic sweetheart who loves to play and would thrive in an active, kid-friendly home without cats. Bring your playful pup for a trainer-led meet and greet to see if they’re the perfect match!

All our dogs are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm-negative. $300 Adoption fees include 2 complimentary training sessions to help you and your new best friend start off on the right paw.

It's important to note that these dogs are being offered as loving pets only and are not suited to be service dogs. While they were initially selected for service dog training, not all dogs make it through the rigorous program. These dogs will not be trained to perform specific tasks like medical alerts or other service dog duties. They are wonderful companions looking for a forever home where they can enjoy the love and care they deserve. If you're looking for a loyal, affectionate pet, one of these dogs might be the perfect addition to your family!

🎉 Congratulations to Kayla and Jackson on passing their second Public Access Test! 🎉

Every year, our clients work hard to take and pass the Public Access Test, and we are honored to be part of their journey with their service dogs. It's not always an easy path, and there are both successes and setbacks along the way. But Kayla and Jackson have persevered, and today they are a shining example of dedication, hard work, and teamwork.

We’re so proud of how far they’ve come and how well they’re working together. It's been a year full of growth, and we can't wait to see all that they’ll continue to accomplish.

Keep up the great work, Kayla and Jackson! 🐶❤️
