Talking Parrot

One day a man went to an auction. While there, he bid on a parrot. He really wanted this bird, so he got caught up in the bidding. He kept on bidding, but kept getting outbid, so he bid higher and higher and higher.

Finally, after he bid way more than he intended, he won the bid - the parrot was his at last!

As he was paying for the parrot, he said to the Auctioneer, "I sure hope this parrot can talk. I would hate to have paid this much for it, only to find out that he can't talk!"

"Don't worry." said the Auctioneer, "He can talk. Who do you think kept bidding against you?"

On August 19,1960, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 5 into space. Aboard on the spacecraft were two female dogs, Belka (meaning “Whitey”)and Strelka (meaning “Little Arrow”). Belka and Strelka were stray dogs that a Soviet scientist found roaming the streets of Moscow. They believed that stray dogs would endure the harshness of space better than housetrained dogs. Both dogs were launched into space and orbited the Earth more than a dozen times before returning to Earth the next day. They lived a happy life in Moscow. Strelka later had a puppy named Pushinka, who was given to President John F. Kennedy. Both Belka and Strelka were preserved after their death at the Museum of Cosmonautics in Moscow.

The Troubled Cremation of Stevie the Cat

Unfortunately, pet cremation is not regulated in Indiana, or most states in the United States. To those of us who demand ethical care for our beloved pets, the fear of having someone not do what they are promising with their aftercare services is extremely upsetting.

Many pet crematories hide behind the use of terms unfamiliar to the general public, such as "individual" cremation or only ask if the person wants "ashes back," not explaining that their pet will be cremated with many others, separated by bricks in the cremation unit, or not separated at all.

Private cremation is very important to us, as well as treating your precious pet with dignity and respect after they have passed. This podcast contains some very troubling information about those in the industry who do not reveal their cremation practices to their clients. Unfortunately, we have some of those people doing business in Indianapolis too.

If getting only your pet returned to you is important, you must ask questions of your veterinarian, or the company you have contacted to take care of your pet. We understand cost may be a factor in deciding on a shared or individual cremation, but you are entitled to know what service you are purchasing for your pet. You have a choice in who cares for your pet. You do not have to use the service your veterinarian provides. No questions should go unanswered.

I know the Remkus Family and of course "The Fabulous" Coleen Ellis, and I applaud them in bringing attention to this troubling issue in our industry.

There are lots of things in your life that can reinvigorate the wonder, and best of all they're free. For example, the ability to overcome hardships and appreciate what you already have instead of wishing you had more. Or the ridiculous things your dog and cats do, always living in the moment. Or even the way life’s traumas end up making the good times even sweeter. What other priceless things in your life are you sure not to take for granted?
