โจ๏ธcome when called walksโจ๏ธ
This is only part of how I build a solid recall but it is an essential part, especially if you want to practice for if your dog gets out of the house or if off leash is one of your goals.
In addition to your structured leash walking you should also take come when called walks.
90% of the time your dog gets to be a dog
10% of the time you call them to "come!"
The only rules for the dog are to not pull and to not be rude to neighbors. Outside of that they can go wild.
Tools:
- flat collar
- 15' leash
- high value treats
Let your dog really explore and enjoy themselves. Don't call them to come for the first 5 mins. Encourage them to have a good time.
Ignore your dog if they stick to your side.
When your dog is good and distracted
1. Say "name, come!" In a happy voice
2. Bend down, wiggle your fingers, and back up
--> do NOT just stand there! Boooorrriiing. Movement will suck your dog in as well as tighten the line for you. The movement can phase out over time but in the beginning, for your dog's sake, be interesting!
3. If your dog doesnt come to you continue to back up and add movement making silly noises until they do come. Reel them in if you have to. Do NOT repeat the word come!
4. When your dog arrives give them a "yes!" And treat
5. Touch their gear
6. Give another command or release them back to freedom
---> place and heel are great when hiking. Come then put your dog out of the way of someone passing.
The goal: when your dog is very distracted you can say "come!" And they pop and spin to come back to you.
Remember - youre competing with smells and squirrels and other interesting things they dont experience for most of the day. The more enthusiasm you have the more your dog will WANT to come to you!
The only thing that is going to make your dog spin and come back when they hear you call them is HABIT. This is a LIFE SKILL THAT YOU PRACTICE REGULARLY!
I'd love to see your dog's recall!
