Sunset walk anyone?
It's time for one of my silly human examples...
You live a comfortable life in a nice big open concept home in a great neighborhood. Your family has everything they could need. But in order to provide that you live an incredibly busy life. Would you allow your 14 year old child to do whatever they want with the wonderful resources you've provided? Not just for a day or a weekend but forever?
At some point that teeneager is going to start making mistakes with the freedom you've given them. When they do would you continue giving them complete freedom to do whatever they want with the beautiful lifestyle you've provided them? Over and over again no consequences for the wrong choices until one day you're surprised when they take your favorite car - the one under the tarp - out for a joy ride and crash it and someone gets hurt.
This handsome Australian labradoodle is Bo. He's an amazing dog. Sweet and gentle and occasionally super silly and playful. He likes to lay on the back of the couch like a cat. And he, of course, excelled at puppy class.
Bo has also bitten a delivery driver and a dog walking past in front of the house.
Sweet Bo is a ✨️LIABILITY✨️
How did he become a liability? By being given too much freedom with a wonderful life. He was potty trained and didn't chew up the house so he had earned free reign to so as he pleased. Then he would get overarroused about something and no one corrected it or taught an alternate behavior. Over time Bo got more and more aroused at triggers until eventually he became sooo over aroused that he became a Biter.
Bo's family didn't do anything wrong. They did the best they could with the resources they had. Their dogs are *incredibly* loved and well cared for. They just didn't know how to handle Bo's overarousal.
If you've made it this far I'm going to tell you the most simple, easy and overlooked part of training.... that if your dog is making mistakes repeatedly and escalating they have too much freedom. Limit their ability to make the wrong choice. USE - THE - LEASH!
Bo is progressing super well. His impulse control, leashwalking, staying under control during play are all so much better. He's also responding to corrections.
If you feel like you just don't know what to do with your dog's behavior - that's what I'm here for. To show you how to use management, teach an alternate behavior and correct the unwanted one.
