Someone save Gizmo from this torture π₯Ίπ₯Ίπ₯Ί
Send your dog to stay with me so I can send you fun updates like this π€£
Let's see how your pups spent their snow day! Cuddled on the couch or out playing!? We did both! Or just share that snow picture you took of your yard. I know you have one! βοΈβοΈ
Edit: do NOT try this at home. Dogs need body conditioning just like humans before a big lift. Her weight pull was kept very short and after the video I added a rope from me to the sled so I could take some of the weight off her. This is a custom made weight pull harness as well.
Spencer is one of my Buy A Trained Puppies from 3 years ago (already! π±). We are introducing the ecollar to clean up some unwanted behaviors inside the house. His mom has done such an awesome job maintaining his foundational obedience that he is so easy to train now. What an awesome start to 2025!
How is your year kicking off?
From our family to yours, Merry Christmas. ππ
What are those 3 D's again??
Leo learned the cue "go to crate" while with me but his mom did an awesome job adding DISTANCE to the cue so he can be sent to the crate from farther away. She also added distance to sending him to place! Awesome work! πππ
Downtown Carmel is a very underrated place to socialize. Socializing is more than just being social - it's being comfortable in this crazy world around us. Before the video starts Seven did BIG barks at the scary kid that doesn't move. So much so that he set off 101 dalmations style barking from the condos around us. Guardians gon guard (default setting when uncomfortable). So, we stepped away, reset to calm and then try again. That's where the video picks up.
Even if your dog doesn't have a big reaction to something give them space to take in their environment. If they stop to stare at something let them. Take a moment for yourself to notice all the chaos we are so accustomed to that our house pets may not be. You'll see at the tail end of the video that Seven tells me he is over it by getting back in heel position.
Other weird stuff we saw today: big salt spreaders passing us on the sidewalk, Amazon trucks stopping unexpectedly and the Amazon driver running right in front of us, people with big hats and gloves reaching out to pet, Christmas decorations blowing in the wind etc etc
Oh, and the guy who yelled out his car window "CONTROL YOUR DOG LADY" when Seven barked at the statue. Oh, Carmel π₯° so many nice opportunities to socialize.
Get your dog out at least every other week to a place outside of their norm and you will have a much calmer and steadier dog overall. Who doesn't want that?
AUTONOMY is the ability to choose what happens to one's own self. Having a dog who willingly participates, who β¨οΈchoosesβ¨οΈ to engage in a necessary but potentially unpleasant activity is essential. Especially when that dog is a gigantic great dane who knows how to throw his weight around to get his way.
Phase 1: learn to put face into muzzle
A) Click & treat for looking at muzzle
B) click and treat for touching muzzle
C) click and treat for touching inside muzzle
D) click and treat for face into muzzle
E) click and treat for duration with face in muzzle
Phase 2 - begin when happily putting face into muzzle. Repeat phase one but in new environments.
Phase 3 - at home, repeat phase 1 and do the snaps and take back off. Repeat adding duration to straps done, click and treat for duration, delivering treats through the muzzle
Phase 4 - play the game, do the straps and *immediately* go for a walk or another very engaging activity that your dog enjoys. Remove muzzle after a few minutes of walking. Repeat with muzzle on for longer durations. The goal is to provide a distraction that will keep your dog's focus off of the muzzle.
THE KEY is that muzzle predicts good things. For every traumatic trip to the vet there needs to be MANY times where the muzzle predicts awesome. We want to pull out the muzzle and dog goes "yippee! We are going to so something fun today!"
Repeat phase 1 throughout the dog's lifetime to keep muzzle a happy fun time game.

Can we just talk about how Captain watches these girls so closely for guidance. None of these are my kid. And he is sooooo happy to follow them. I could watch this 1000 times π
Herman and Buddy were such a handful on the leash that their mom decided that it was easier to just not take them anywhere. Sound familiar?

They were here when I broke my ankle and were just starting to show improvement when I had to send them home so it has been a real joy to get back to work with them and see them absolutely thrive in training.
I trust their new leash skills so much that I felt comfortable walking them while my 4 year old rode his bike!! π±π€―π that's HUGE!
Next we take this beautiful leash walk into public πͺ
