I post this every year. It is very important to me. You would not believe some of the excuses I hear when people call us to take their dog into our rescue.
Please, please, please SHARE.

šŸŽ„ Why is a Christmas Dog a Mistake?šŸŽ„

The arrival of a dog changes a household considerablyā€”for years. Someone has to take responsibility for their daily needsā€”housebreaking, feeding, exercise, health care, grooming. The decision should be thought about, talked about, negotiated. A new dog, not necessarily a puppy either, should be the result of a process, not an impulse. Your family will have the responsibility for this life for 8 - 15 years, depending on the breed.

šŸ™† Kids can be unreliable; kids change. šŸ™‡

The puppy melts their hearts for a few days or weeks. But then it needs to be walked every day (in the rain). It needs careful attention to its feeding and eliminating if it's going to be housebroken effectively. It needs to be taught not to jump on Grandma. The kids oohing and aahing under the tree will soon move on to Minecraft, IMing and texting their friends. The puppy will be put in a crate as your family goes off to Grandpa's and you will not be happy coming home to a p**p covered crate because the puppy isn't housebroken.

The bigger problem with the Christmas pup is that good, solid, healthy dogs are usually unavailable for holiday giving. Breeders don't want their dogs to end up in households where nobody understands the work involved in raising them. Experienced rescue group volunteers and shelter workers hate the whole idea of the Christmas dog because they know many of those dogs will be coming back to them.

The dogs that are readily available at Christmas are the kind you probably don't want. Puppy mills grind out thousands of puppies to meet holiday demand. They're the dogs you find in pet stores and mallsā€”cute as puppies but often in**ed, poorly socialized, and more prone to genetic health problems like allergies or bad hips or to behavioral difficulties like compulsive barking or chewing. Pet shops routinely lie to customers about where their puppies come from. Many, if not all, of these puppies are taken from mom when they are 2-3 weeks old. These puppies donā€™t have a chance to socialized with the rest of their litter. Parvo, Distemper, and other respiratory diseases run rampant in these pups.

šŸ’” So What is a Better Idea? šŸ’”

šŸŽ Wrap up a DOG COLLAR, a LEASH, šŸŽ
šŸŽ a DOG DISH and DOG TOYS šŸŽ
Print out some pictures of breeds you would consider and wrap those up too. Wait to you see the understanding & excitement on their faces when they figure out, they are going to get a DOG! Tell them after Christmas they can help choose a dog that fits the family. What a fun way to make Christmas last a week or two.

Choosing a Pet

When it is time to choose a dog, do your homework, choose it carefully, and take your time. Get one from an experienced rescue group, an established animal shelter or a reputable breeder.

Ask lots of questions about the dog; expect the breeder or staff to ask you a lot, too. If they don't, be wary. A store clerk or amateur breeder who simply hands you a dog in exchange for your credit card is not your friend. Experienced dog people know the dogs they sell and the people they are selling them to. And don't worry if the dog comes to you in April instead of on Christmas morning. It will be just as adorable without the tree and the bow.

If you get a weird message from me, it is not me. Apparently, I have an evil twin. Twinsy is sending messages through Facebook Messenger and/or Facebook chat. I have included a screenshot of the devil.

If you know how I can get rid of this twin, send me a private message please. Changing my username and password didn't work.

Since we have talked about this before, I thought this might be of interest. People that have a large or medium sized dog along with their Cavie should pay particular attention.

We all know we should walk our pups at least once a day, but how long should their stroll be? Here's what vets think.

WoW. It IS all about the money.
ADOPT-A-PET has always been a go-to spot to send people looking to rescue a pet from a shelter or rescue. The pets are truly homeless.

Yesterday I alerted AAP to the fact a person listed a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel for adoption with a fee of $1,700. This person is selling a young pup. This does NOT seem like a homeless pet.

AAP answered my alert:

"Jamie (Rehome by Adopt a Pet)

Mar 30, 2023, 13:12 PDT

Hi!

Thanks for alerting us! Adopt a Pet recently made an update to our adoption fee process, so please don't be alarmed! Pet owners are now able to set and collect their own adoption fee when listing their pet on Rehome. Owners must now pay a listing fee in order to post their pet on our service, and these fees go to help other homeless pets in need.

For your security, we still advise adopters to never pay a Private Owner until after they have met and agreed to adopt the pet.

Thanks!
Jamie

I have been helping Maria to find a home for her 2 dogs. I am not having any luck keeping them both together, so she has decided to separate them.

Archie is the black one, Cabelo is the brown one. They're 3 years old. Both are neuter and their vaccines are up to date. They're both very active if they're outside. Inside, they sleep a lot.

Cabelo has a curlier coat and is the most laid back. Archie, the black one has the uncurliest coat! Both dogs have the type of coat that needs a commitment to be professionally groomed every 3 to 4 months.

PM me if interested.

Disenfranchised grief refers to losses that society doesnā€™t fully appreciate or ignores. This makes it harder to mourn, at least in public.

Written through tears by Kev Sykes

Thank you all for the kind messages and texts in regards to us loosing Alfie
A few have been asking whatā€™s happening so I feel I need to say in the hope it doesnā€™t happen to any of your loved ones

Last Wednesday I was at Edinburgh Christmas Market and bought some Christmas Pourri to give our house that lovely smell
These have been sitting in the house next to log burner since Wednesday Evening and never been touched or looked at by Alfie.

On Monday evening around 7:30pm I discovered that they were all tipped out onto the floor when I went to light the log burner. (Iā€™ll add the living room door is always closed until someone is in the house which in this case was about 5 mins from setting up the log burner)
Alfie had chewed the Lemons Limes Oranges and Apples
Never thinking anything I put them back.
At 7am the following morning Alfie was sick followed by more sick later on that morning so Alfie was taken to the vets
He was given the upmost brilliant care and was given a injection to stop the sickness and pills to help his stomach also

Alfie was defo not himself the rest of day lounging about and sleeping
Kev was off all day and kept a close eye on him

I got home from work around 8pm and sadly by ourside Alfie passed away.
We are heartbroken and devasted so if anyone has these next to there log burner or open fire or even in a bowl please keep them away from any pets reach.
The oil and sprays in these to give them the Christmas smell sadly resulted in Alfieā€™s death.
