By age 3, up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have signs of periodontal disease. 🦷🐾 It is a common but serious dental condition affecting pets, caused by the buildup of plaque and tartar on the teeth. Over time, this buildup can lead to inflammation and infection of the gums (gingiva) and the tissues supporting the teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to pain, tooth loss, and systemic health issues affecting the heart, kidneys, and liver. So make that appointment.

Pets won’t voluntarily lay still for extended periods, so we use anesthesia to ensure we can do a thorough and complete job painlessly, including checking for signs of disease and cleaning under the gums, where most of the danger lies. We utilize the safest available anesthetics and protocols, customized for each pet, especially for our older or higher-risk patients, along with attentive monitoring by our team of skilled technicians.

In the same way you have your blood checked regularly to evaluate your overall health and organ functions, your pets need the same type of monitoring. And because they age faster than us, it’s important to screen for issues routinely so any change or abnormality can be addressed promptly. It is this proactive approach that can make an enormous difference in the longevity and quality of your pet’s life.
