336723 Koufax, neutered mixed breed, 6 yrs. 62 lbs. HW neg. I met big Koufax when staff had him out. He is a handsome tall boy. He likes affection, and will sit for treats. Koufax was surrendered for jumping the fence, and bothering the smaller dog in the home. Owner said he would charge and bark the small dog. Staff did dog test here with similar sized dog and he was relaxed and calm and no negative behaviors seen. He has developed some barrier reactivity to the dogs while walking through the kennel but is otherwise easy to walk on leash.
Volunteer had this to say about Koufax: "I’m a laid back type of fellow. Who enjoys a nice walk! I walk well on a leash and just enjoy sniffing and taking in my surroundings! I enjoy yummy treats and take them better with an open hand. I do enjoy pets, but would also just enjoy being near you and your company!"

Vet staff say Koufax has poor range of motion in his hips. Vet said he looks to have an old injury/fracture to the left femoral neck/head that has caused significant bony remodeling and arthritis. Both knees also have a lot of movement consistent with cranial cruciate injuries. Koufax would like need a surgical consult so will need to be pulled by rescue rather than adoption from here.

325885 Ranger Mike, male Mastiff mix, 10 yrs. 103 lbs. HW neg. Ranger Mike was said to have been pushed from a moving car and seemed to be limping on his hind leg. He is an old slow moving sort of gentleman. He enjoys going for walks and being outside. Easy guy to visit with. Stoic and independent and may have some vision/hearing age related issues, but with some sweet talking and petting he will wag and show some engagement. His toenails are in need of attention, and hoping our vet staff can look him over and do senior exam soon. He does seem to hyper focus on cats when he saw them so may be best for home with no kitties.

UPDATE 8/3: We did dog test with Mike yesterday. He tolerated other dog sniffing and He sniffed other dog chest/face and no issues. Did a couple of circles with other senior male dog and then both went their separate ways.

With warmer weather here, just don’t! If they can’t ride inside your vehicle, leave them at home!

With warmer weather here, just don’t! If they can’t ride inside your vehicle, leave them at home!

We know, we understand, your dog LOVES riding the back of the pick-up truck, but sometimes you need to be the adult and say NO! It is absolutely NOT SAFE! Your dog could be thrown from the truck and then run over by other vehicles, or just killed outright.

As our weather is getting warmer, the bed of the truck can be a problem. Is your dog standing on a black liner in the full sun, or on the original metal bed? No, they are not used to having their paw pads burned!!

If you are going to Boatnik this weekend, for GOODNESS SAKE, leave your dog at home!!! We don't want to see dogs left in the back of a truck while you enjoy the festivities!

91 animals in foster, at least 3 more litters waiting patiently for a safe place! Fosters are full and we need more help!

A typical week for the shelter can vary so much but one thing is clear: the last 2 years have affected EVERYTHING in the animal welfare industry. With limited spay/neuter appointments, limited staff, and limited time, so many animals are still waiting to be fixed. We are at emergency status on kitten season, and it is only May! WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need foster homes for mommas with litters, socialization fosters for semi-social kittens, and general fosters for underage kittens. This is not just a need; this is a requirement for us to do the animals of Morgan County justice!

Monday started as a normal day. First, we get a call of 3 adult female cats and 5 kittens dumped, we take them in and immediately start to find fosters. By mid-day, we have 2 dogs brought in. By 3pm we have another mom and 5 kittens as well as a separate litter of 6 kittens. Our fosters are full, we are out of room- no more space here. We have an additional 6 semi- feral kittens and two 2 litters coming in by the end of the week. What should we do? Where should we go for help? What options are there? Every shelter and rescue is experiencing this exact same thing and it is heartbreaking. Please consider fostering so that we can keep helping the animals of Morgan County. Fill out a Foster Application at www.mchumanesoc.org. 🥰
