We are excited to introduce you to the newest member of the Simon Skjodt International Orangutan Center – Ember! She is a 43-year-old female Bornean orangutan, who comes to us from our colleagues at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium. She shows a lot of confidence & loves to explore her new habitat. With Ember, the Zoo now houses 11 orangutans. In yesterday’s celebration of , our Primate Keepers put together special enrichment items to welcome Ember to the Zoo on her first day into the R.B. Annis Atrium. Today, Ember ventured outside into the West Yard of the orangutan center for the very first time. She explored the whole area and even climbed one of the towers of the Hutan Trail!

– At age 43, Ember is the oldest female orangutan at the Zoo, the only female Bornean (all others are Sumatran and Bornean mixed) orangutan in Indy.

We join the Indianapolis community in mourning the loss of John Vanausdall, who retired in 2023 after 27 years as President and CEO of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. Over his nearly three decades of servant leadership, John transformed the Eiteljorg Museum into a nationally acclaimed museum of Native American art and art of the American West. He will be remembered for his deep respect for Native American culture and people, his deep commitment to preserving and honoring that culture, and for his gentle spirit of kindness that touched everyone he met.

Let us hear you ROAR for ! 🐯 Today we highlight how purr-fect this species is and the importance of tiger across the globe.

that Amur tigers are endangered and there are about 500 left of them in the world? Their decline in numbers is caused by poaching, illegal wildlife trafficking & habitat loss due to the growing metal and mineral mining industry. Creating and maintaining mines requires clearcutting the forests where tigers live.

How can we help? By recycling old electronics. The metals and minerals in cell phones, computers, and tablets can be reused in new electronics. When we recycle them, it reduces the pressure mining puts on tiger habitats.

Our Story

Since opening in 1964, the Indianapolis Zoo has emerged as a world-class facility, and it hosts more than a million visitors annually. Located in White River State Park since 1988, the 64-acre Zoo was the first to be triple accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Alliance of Museums as a zoo, an aquarium and a botanic garden. The Zoo is also a global leader in animal conservation and research. Funding from the Indianapolis Zoo also supports the efforts of animal conservation organizations around the globe. At the Zoo, guests can connect with animals and plants within the Zoo’s biomes, or living habitats that closely resemble their native regions of the globe. These five areas — Oceans, Forests, Deserts, Encounters and Plains — are home to more than 1,600 animals of approximately 230 species as well as 31,000 plant specimens that guests can visit year-round. White River Gardens is also part of the Zoo and continues its tradition of connecting animals, plants and people. This beautiful 3.3-acre landmark botanical attraction includes a 5,000 square-foot conservatory and combines the best of gardening ideas, plant information and inspirational design to serve the needs of all visitors.
