It's hard to leave your pets at home when you have errands to run, but being separated could cause your pet to become overly anxious. It's important to be aware of separation anxiety to help your pet overcome it.

Make sure to schedule an appointment with your VCA veterinarian to discuss how to handle your pet's separation anxiety.

10 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS FROM GETTING LOST.

MICROCHIP your pet. It's a painless process and will be "good" for your pet's lifetime. Don't forget to properly license your pet.
PUT ID TAGS on your pet's collar. Make sure the collar is secure. Tags should include your name and phone number. (My dog's collar tag has his name, my name, my phone number and my address.)
KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH when outside your property. Although leashing a dog is the law in many towns and cities, it's also a law that seems to be ignored too frequently.
TEACH YOUR DOG STAY & COME COMMANDS. That way, when you are outside on a street, in a park, a parking lot, if for some reason your dog gets out of your grasp and runs, they are likely to listen to your command and come back.
DON'T LEAVE YOUR PETS ALONE OUTSIDE for any length of time, especially at night, if you're in an area prone to coyotes, mountain lions, hawks, other predators.
FENCE YOUR YARD and make sure the gates are secure and always closed. And make certain the fencing you use doesn't allow your dog to push through the fence slats.
KEEP YOUR CATS INDOORS but if you do let them outdoors, make sure they are on a leash or a harness or in a fenced in catio.
KEEP CURRENT PHOTOS OF YOUR PETS on-hand at all times. These will come in handy if one of your pets ever gets lost.
WHEN TRAVELLING ALWAY SECURE YOUR PET(S) IN A QUALITY CARRIER made for travel. Be sure to properly label the carrier. In your car, be sure to harness your dog to a seat belt.
SECURE YOUR HOME. Make certain your dogs and cats can't escape out the windows or doors. All doors (including screen and storm doors) should be securely latched. Windows at ground level should remain closed

At VCA Valley Animal Medical Center all patients (including appointments) are seen on a triage basis when emergencies walk through the door. Our experienced nurses will assess your pet’s condition and your pet will be seen by the veterinarian in order of emergent priority. We understand that waiting in emergency is a stressful situation, however we also appreciate your understanding that if we leave to stabilize an animal suffering from a life-threatening condition, that we will return to your pet’s consultation as soon as possible. If this does mean a short delay in your own pet’s consultation, we will endeavor to keep you informed of any expected delays.

While cats are famous for their ability to land on their feet, the reality is they don’t always stick their landing. High rise syndrome refers to the common set of injuries that cats may sustain when they fall from high places. This condition is seen more often in warmer weather, but high rise syndrome can occur anytime a window or balcony door is left open. Treatment depends upon the injuries suffered, but typically includes oxygen for chest trauma, surgery for abdominal injuries or broken bones, and dental work for fractured jaws or teeth. Thankfully, high-rise syndrome can be prevented by not giving your cat access to open windows or balconies.

06/03/2024

Heat stroke in dogs is a serious condition that can occur when a dog's body temperature rises uncontrollably due to excessive heat. This can often happen when pets are left in hot cars, over-exercised in hot weather, or not provided with adequate shelter and water in high-temperature conditions. Seeking veterinary advice is crucial. A veterinarian can assess the pet's condition, provide appropriate treatment, and advise on further steps. It's also important to note that the symptoms of heat stroke can sometimes be similar to other medical conditions, so it's best not to self-diagnose.

"Hello again, friends! Loui here with another edition of Learning with Loui!"

"Summer is a season of fun for everyone, including your furry friends. However, the sun can be both friend and foe to your pets."
"While we enjoy the warmth and energy it provides, we can easily overheat, leading to heat stroke. To ensure our safety and enjoyment, it's crucial to monitor our activity levels and provide us with ample opportunities to cool down. This guide will explore the fun outdoor activities for dogs, how to keep them cool and safe in the sun, and the signs of heat stroke to watch out for."
"Remember, prevention is always better than cure. Keep your pet cool, hydrated, and healthy, and always be mindful of the sun."

As our affectionate, lifelong companions, dogs provide us with support and unconditional love, but what happens when we forget about our dog’s worries due to having our own? Like humans, dogs can experience anxiety, and although it may seem like it’s not that common, this problem is actually prevalent in dogs. That’s why Dog Anxiety Awareness Week was created. This event is about raising awareness about dog anxiety and helping dog parents worldwide help their pets cope with this problem.
Remember, every dog is different, and the signs of anxiety can vary from one dog to another. It's essential to observe your dog's behavior and consult a veterinarian if you suspect they may be suffering from anxiety.
