CAN Clinic Partner Samantha Rhodes of Traveling Paws has been named ‘HUMANE HERO HONOREE” by Palm Springs Animal Shelter ‼️ This is an incredible honor and highlights Samantha’s dedication to helping animals and we appreciate her so much for being apart of our clinics!! 🐾

When Samantha Rhodes sees a problem, she fixes it. That is precisely what she has done for cats in the Coachella Valley. A lifetime animal lover, Sam was the perfect hire for the Best Friends Animal Society to implement a three-year, grant-funded TNR program in the Coachella Valley. In that role, Sam saw firsthand the tremendous gaps in support and resources for both owned and free-roaming cats and got to work to help them. Her efforts inspired her son, Colton, to found Traveling Paws, an organization dedicated to helping all animals, with a focus on cats. To date, Traveling Paws has helped spay and neuter over 4,000 cats and 100 dogs. Adding in the time she spent with Best Friends, Sam has been involved in more than 14,500 cat spay/neuter procedures over the last ten years.

Sam is a key partner for our Palm Springs Animal Shelter team. She works closely with our Community Cat department, focusing on the east end of the Coachella Valley, where the need is great, and resources are scarce. Her tenacity is legendary, and the impact she has made is truly the work of an unsung local hero. This year, we are celebrating her with gratitude and appreciation.

CAN Founder Kim Hardee has been named ‘Champion for animals” by Palm Springs Animal Shelter ‼️ This is an incredible honor and highlights Kim’s dedication to helping animals 🐾

Palm Springs Animal Shelter: Celebrating Dedication

Animal advocate Kim Hardee is the driving force and director of CAN, the Coachella Animal Network. This “one-woman army” is supported by her animal-loving husband, John, and backed by a team of volunteers. Understanding that pet overpopulation is the leading cause of pet deaths, Kim decided to tackle the problem head-on, founding her own nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization focused on providing free and low-cost spay and neuter services for low-income residents. Kim thoughtfully chose a name for her organization whose initials spell out the word CAN, believing that by working together as a community, we all CAN solve the homelessness and suffering of our animals.

Since 2013, Kim has organized and run 2–3 clinics a month, 10 months a year, where owners can bring their pets to receive low-cost vaccinations, microchips, free collars and tags, as well as affordable spaying and neutering. Kim and CAN have been responsible for over 23,000 spayed and neutered dogs and cats. As a rescue warrior, Kim fights for every animal to have health, happiness, and a home. One day at a time, one dog or cat at a time, one more family able to afford having their animals spayed and neutered, all thanks to one inspiring woman who does not take “no” for an answer.
