Animal Health Alert: atypical canine infectious respiratory disease (acrid)

Over the past several weeks , the Los Angeles Veterinary Public Health Program has received multiple reports of dogs experiencing an acute onset respiratory disease of unknown cause. Similar outbreaks were seen in other states recently. This outbreak described animals developing primary respiratory signs ; coughing and some even needing hospitalization . A few have died, as this outbreak has been minimally responsive to antibiotics and can progress very quickly to a pneumonia. Please be careful of deciding to use boarding kennels and daycare facilities. There is no known cause of this ACRID at this time. Please feel free to call our hospital if you feel your pet is experiencing any respiratory signs this season .

🎁I fully believe that the new pet owner should be an active participant in choosing their new pet for the *best* chances of finding the pet a forever home.

🎁 If you want to gift a pet, have the breeder contact the person to discuss what personalities and/or breeds work best for their lifestyle. Good breeders want their puppies/kittens to go to a forever home.

🎁 If you want to gift a pet, take the person to the local shelter to help them choose their own pet who sparks their interest and begin a lifelong bond.

🎁 And if you’re gifting for a child, please discuss with their parents first. The parents will be responsible for the medical care, husbandry and finances for the pet.

Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health needs your help and so do we. It has been determined that 40-50% of cats and dogs in Covid 19 positive households test positive for Sars Cov 2 by serology. You may have been hearing about Seresto collars in the news. This is and remains to be a safe and effective form of flea and tick preventative. The issue was and still is the many counterfeit collars sold online and in pet stores. These counterfeit collars have caused the morbidities mentioned in the news. Our hospital has prescribed Seresto collars for our patients for over 9 years without any side effects , seizures or deaths. If you have purchased a Seresto collar directly from our hospital, have comfort in knowing that is was purchased directly from the manufacturer and is the actual safe and effective collar that was introduced in 2013. This collar should not be recalled. If any news organization had cared enough to interview a veterinarian before publishing erroneous sensationalized information, this would be a non-issue.

Looks like we will be escorting in a very wet and happy new year 2022. With all of this rain, please try to keep your pets safe, healthy and dry. Keep your eye out for ”Mr Snuggles” and call us if any urination patterns change drastically in cats being kept indoors during these winter storms. Mood modifying medication can be prescribed on an as needed basis. Medication for dogs for New Year’s Eve fireworks are also available. Call soon as we will be closing for the Holiday early as well.
