Iowa State did an experiment and fed oats to chickens for 5 years and documented everything. Here are the results.

1. Oats are the best single grain for poultry.

2. Feeding 40% oats is beneficial for growing chicks, laying hens and turkeys.

3. Chicks fed oats will grow faster and feather more rapidly than on any other common grain.

4. Mortality rate decreases with oats.

5. Whole oats reduce cannibalism and feather picking.

6. Chicks from hens on a high oat ration have more vigor than those from hens with a high corn ration.

7. Oats do not have a negative effect on egg laying or hen health. The oat-based diet led to more eggs and larger egg size.

To answer your questions

To get Hy-Line Browns, you need to cross a Rhode Island Red with a Light Suss*x hen. Golden Comets and Cinnamon Queens are almost an identical cross. To get Cinnamon Queens you need to cross a pure Rhode Island Red rooster with a Rhode Island White hen. To get Golden Comets you need to cross a Production Red rooster with a Rhode Island White hen. Cherry Eggers and Production Reds are labels used by different hatcheries for the same red gene rooster cross X red gene hen cross. You can get Cherry Eggers/Production Reds by crossing any combination of Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire Red, or Cherry Egger/Production Red. Cherry Eggers/Production Reds are not s*x linked; the chicks are all reddish (both male and female), and cannot be s*xed by color at hatching. Cherry Eggers/Production Reds are excellent layers but not usually quite the egg laying machines that s*x links are. Other labels under which some hatcheries (depending on which silver gene hens are used) market their Red S*x Links are Red Star, Gold Star, Brown S*x Link, Gold S*x Link, Golden Buff, Bovans Brown, Hubbard Golden Comet, Isa Brown, , Shaver Brown, Babcock Brown, Warrens, Gold Lines, Lohmans, Lohmans Brown, Brown Shaver, Red Shaver, Bovans Goldline, etc. Black S*x Links are also marketed by hatcheries under the labels Black Star and Bovans Nera.

As baby chick season approaches and the price of eggs keep rising, I’m sure a lot of people are tempted to raise chickens themselves. Before people flock (no pun intended 🤣) to their local farm store and start buying all the baby chicks please consider the following 10 fun facts….
1. Most hens do not start laying eggs until 18-22 weeks of age (that’s about 5 months give or take)
2. For the first few weeks of their lives baby chickens need to be kept at a temperature of around 95 degrees Fahrenheit
3. Chicks need to eat…SURPRISE! And like the price of everything else chicken feed has went up. A 50lb bag of layer is over $20.
4. Chickens molt…what does that mean? Your chicken will become ugly and stop laying eggs for a period of time.
5. Chickens don’t lay as many eggs in the winter months.
6. The average lifespan of a chicken is 5-10 years.
7. Predators such as foxes, coyotes, neighbor’s dogs and even raccoons will hunt your chickens.
8. Chickens will p**p EVERYWHERE and I mean everywhere so be prepared to clean their pen often or if they are free range be sure to check your step or look before you sit.
9. Chickens love to dig holes and destroy bedding around flowers in the yard, good luck keeping them from doing so.
10. Chickens can get medical issues just like any other animal.
I’m not trying to discourage anyone from raising their own food in fact I think it’s great. However chickens are animals, animals that require attention and proper care.
So while I get that you don’t want to spend $7 on a dozen eggs double think your decision before you go gung ho on being a chicken farmer. Just do your research, it’s not like getting a fish 🤦🏼‍♀️
Sincerely,
A fellow chicken owner

We have to change the rhetoric!
I like math, let’s do some:
PER HEN
$3.50 - pullet chick
$24.00 - chick starter (for 7 months)
$2.50 - nutrients supplement
Total $30 for a chick to 7 months old hen
7 months on for 2 years (prime laying) per hen
2lbs feed per week X 52 weeks a year for 2 years = 208 lbs fed.
208 lbs / by 50lb (per bag) = 4.16 bags fed
4.16 bags X $21.80 = $90.69 worth of feed
$90.69 + $30= $120.69 total
Let’s pretend the chicken for two years produce 400 eggs… average depends on breed.
$120.69/400= $.3017
$.3017 X 12 = $3.62 PER DOZEN
Now add in: equipment, heat, bedding, fencing, water, time, electricity, predation … etc!!
That’s $3.62 a dozen without the add ins… TO BREAK EVEN.
Let’s change this rhetoric going around let’s try:
“I can’t believe I paid $5 for these corporate garbage quality eggs from a supermarket”
Or better yet:
“I can’t believe I ONLY paid $5 for these locally produced, high quality eggs”
It’s just not sustainable.

Jersey Giant Standard and Appearance
The Black Jersey Giant was admitted to the American Poultry Association in 1922. The White followed in 1947 and the Blue in 2003.

The Giant is a big bird – males can weigh in at around 13-15 pounds, with the females weighing around 11 pounds. The black variety is usually around a pound heavier than the white.

The height of the male bird is usually between 22-26 inches, with the female being 16-20 inches.

The bird has a moderate to a long body that is both wide and deep – giving the impression of a square bird. The back is comprehensive and flat, and a tail that is relatively short for the size of the bird.

As we have already noted, this is a robust bird.

Black Giants should have a ‘beetle green’ sheen to their feathers in sunlight, which is absolutely stunning.

Legs should be black, although they have yellow soles on their feet and four toes on each foot.

There should be no feathering on the legs.

A single comb and wattles should be red. They are yellow-skinned birds.

Their eyes are dark brown. The beak should be black with a slight tinge of yellow at the tip.

The feathers on all Giants are “tighter” than most other common poultry breeds, making them easier to clean up before showing or exhibition. It also serves them well in cold climates, and they are good, cold-tolerant birds.

Jersey Giant
Jersey Giant Temperament and Egg Laying
The Giant is a docile, mellow bird in general, even the roosters. They are known as friendly birds, and several folks have kept them as pets rather than their intended purpose of table birds.

They are good with children generally, although their large size can be intimidating to some smaller children since they stand so tall.

The hens seldom go broody, but when they do, they really aren’t the greatest setters because of their weight – sadly, they are prone to breaking the eggs.

The egg size is huge, and because of this size, chicks may take a couple of extra days to hatch. Also worth noting is that pullets may not reach their point of lay until around 6 months old.

However, the Jersey Giant eggs can be set under a regular broody to ensure a continuous supply of quality birds.

WHITE SUSSEX CHICKENS

USES: UTILITY – DUAL PURPOSE, EXHIBITION.
EGGS: 180 – 210 CREAM / LIGHT BROWN

WEIGHT: C**K: 8.8 lbs. HEN: 6.6 lbs
COLOURS: BROWN, BUFF, CORONATION, LIGHT, RED, SPECKLED, SILVER, WHITE (WE ONLY BREED White SUSSEX)
USEFUL TO KNOW: HARDY
LIGHT SUSSEX CHICKENS ARE A DUAL PURPOSE UTILITY BREED THAT IS ALSO POPULAR ON THE SHOW SCENE AND RELATIVELY EASY TO KEEP. THEY ARE ALSO AVAILABLE FROM SOME BREEDERS AS BANTAMS, WE ONLY BREED LARGE.
Suss*x chickens are upright, alert, and usually docile. The Suss*x Chicken has a wide, flat back, a deep breast and broad shoulders. Their tail is held at 45 degrees. They have a single comb and red ear lobes and comb. They are good foragers and the Light Suss*x is often used to create hybrids. When crossed with a ‘gold’ cockerel, they will produce s*x-linked chicks. They can go broody.

The Speckled Suss*x was created in Britain in the 18th Century, first appearing at a poultry show in 1845. Other colours were soon created with different crosses but the Buff Suss*x didn’t appear until 1920. The Coronation Suss*x was created for the coronation of King Edward VIII in 1936 (this didn’t actually happen because he abdicated and his younger brother became King George VI) but there were very few birds by the beginning of World War 2. We have found one strain of the original Large Fowl remaining but Coronation Suss*x were re-created and re-introduced by Rob Whittington. Large Fowl are very rare but slowly making a comeback.

The original Speckled Suss*x chickens are thought to be a cross between white fleshed table birds and an imported Asiatic bird like the Brahma. The modern strains of Suss*x will lay around 180 to 200 medium-sized eggs in their first year for you without artificial lighting.

They are a popular white fleshed chicken used for producing meat. The chicks of all of the varieties are fast to mature, with the exception of the speckled that takes a little longer.

HISTORY OF BREED

Size: 4.4 lbs
Rarity: Common
Purpose: Egg Production
EGG FACTS

300+ Eggs Average Annually
Hy-Line Browns are an incredibly popular chicken choice and that is mainly because they are the producers of the big brown eggs that you buy on the supermarket shelves. We think that hybrid chickens have a place in a backyard flock as they should give you eggs year round while your pure breeds are molting or going broody.

The eggs have superior brown shell color, robustness, size and internal quality.

The Hy-Line Brown also has an excellent friendly temperament making it ideal for backyard environments. They are wonderfully low maintenance and adapt easily to various climates and surroundings. Being the prolific egg-layers that they are though, these gals may need some supplemental protein due to the fact that their bodies convert the protein from their feed into egg producing fuel and thus, their lovely feathers will need some protein TLC.

Early maturation allows these chickens to begin laying anywhere from sixteen weeks to twenty-two weeks of age versus the point of lay of other breeds which can be twenty-four weeks or even longer.

Purchasing Hy-Line Chickens at point of lay is a wise decision and a great place to start whether you are a veteran or a new chicken keeper looking for an egg-excellent, highly reliable laying hen.

We have been able to purchase some POL Hy-Line Browns You cannot breed an ISA Brown or Hy-Line – it is a highly protected secret what crosses of birds are used to create them. These ladies will lay close to an egg a day for approximately 2 years. They need to eat high protein feed to achieve that, at least 16 percent.

If you purchase a pure breed chicken, she will give you less eggs per year, but more eggs in total over her lifespan and live longer.

Key features of the Hy-Line Brown are:

The world’s most balanced egg layer, producing over 350 eggs to 80 weeks, peaking in the high 90s
Early laying age with optimum egg size
Very economical feed consumption
Best interior egg quality in the market.
The breed is constantly being improved, with each new Hy-Line generation representing the latest advancements in breeding technology and is bred for a longer, more productive life.
They are vaccinated and generally available all year round in point of lay.
