Look closely at this little black, 8 year old Dachshund/Chihuahua mix named Joey. This photo was taken shortly after he lost everything. What you see in his face is heartbreak and fear. Now take a look at the faces of these two little very senior Papillons (Sweet Pea and Pixie). They too are lost and afraid of what their future holds. These three little ones made it into rescue, many homeless pets are not even this lucky.
COULD THIS BE WHAT THE FUTURE LOOKS LIKE FOR YOUR LOVED AND ADORED PET?
If something should happen to you TODAY, (a debilitating illness, a serious accident, death), leaving you unable to care for your pets for the rest of their lives, what will happen to them? Who is going to provide them with love, food, vet visits, flea and heartworm preventatives, meds, when they are old and their health is failing? Do you have a PLAN in place? Do you ASSUME your family will do it? Don’t put your babies at risk with assumptions.
Joey, a forlorn little senior chiweenie, has lost everything because there was no plan for him. Both of his people found themselves in medical situations leaving them unable to care for Joey, and they were forced to give him up to rescue. Joey will now need to adjust to new people and a new home, what he has known his whole life is suddenly gone, he is lost, wondering where his family went. He doesn’t understand. His little heart is broken, and he has to try and adapt to a whole new life. It isn’t fair to Joey. His people have failed him.
If you think your family is going to take your pet(s) you need to TALK TO THEM about it, don’t just assume they will. Two little Papillons, Pixie and Sweet Pea, ages 13 and 14, were happy little seniors when their human mama died. The family put their human papa in a nursing home, leaving the two dogs homeless. None of the family wanted them, so they made an appointment to have them euthanized, but the vet refused to do so without a health exam to see if euthanizing was warranted. (It wasn’t, they both would have passed with flying colors, as they later did with the rescue.) The family made an appointment, but never took them and instead dumped these two TINY dogs on the street to fend for themselves, against all kinds of dangers and predators. These little dogs lost EVERYTHING they have ever known because “the family” was not willing to step up and keep them through their golden years. They are both in good health and lively, lovable, very bonded to each other, little dogs, who could have met a horrendous fate, all because there was no plan in place, and the assumption that the family would take them was wrong.
MAKE A PLAN for your fur babies NOW, they depend on you to take care of them for the rest of their lives, and that includes making arrangements in case you aren’t there. Don’t put them through the trauma these three little ones have had to endure, it isn’t fair to them. If your family is your plan, talk to them to be certain, and keep updated on things. People change, their lives change, so make sure they are willing and able. You owe it to the little ones who count on you.
