BEARHEAD HAMMOCK - TWO MILE PRAIRIE !!!! Depending on weather, there is a strong possibility that there will be a prescribed burn in this tract on Sunday - 1-5-2025. If they do, ALL HORSE TRAILS WILL BE CLOSED.

Pass the word to your friends. Again, all burns depend on a variety of weather conditions.

DRAFT AND PACK HORSE/MULE OWNERS!!!

The Ocala National Forest has asked Back Country Horsemen of Florida for help in finding willing volunteers and owners of draft and pack horses/mules for clearing storm debris from 5 miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail (hiking trail) in the Juniper Prairie Wilderness Area of the Ocala National Forest in Florida. This Wilderness Area comprises 14,293 acres of the Ocala National Forest. As you know, mechanized machinery is not allowed in Wilderness Areas. The area is east of Ocala, FL near the Marion/Lake County line, north of highway SR 40 and west of U.S. 19 in central Florida.

Specifically, the USFS is asking for help from equestrians with pack horses available to carry tools and saws into the area and pulling draft horses that are available to remove small pine trees and logs obstructing 5 miles of the trail. The terrain is flat to rolling, with sandy soil.

You need not be from Florida or even a member of the Back Country Horsemen to offer the services of you and your stock. This is an opportunity to help the USFS, another trail user group, and give your horses some training and a real job!! If you are tuning up for 2025 draft/mule horse pulls, this might just be the opportunity you need to get those horses/mules in shape!

If this is of interest to you or you have more questions, please contact either of the following:

Lorena Cortes Torres, Recreation Management Specialist
USFS, Ocala National Forest
Cell: 352.339.0525

Shawn Thomas, USFS Liaison Officer

Thank you in advance for your consideration!!! 😊

Saturday, November 16, 2024, FFB*H enjoyed a great picnic at Tillis Hill. We had 41 people in attendance with lots and lots of food. Matt and Brandon from FWC gave us an update on the happenings in the forest as did Kevin Cummings Forest Area Supervisor. A number of people were acknowledged for the work they have done over the last year. Remember to report your hours to Gary Reynolds so both you and FFB*H gets credit for a job well done!

The Christmas Social will be at Los Compadres, date to be announced soon. January and February meetings will be at Buffet City with our Spring Picnic at Tillis scheduled for March 22, 2025. We will also have our annual elections at the spring picnic. So if you are interested in being added to the nomination list, please contact us.

Thanks to Steve and Karen Rossman along with new member Debbie Tyrone drove up to holder mine picnic table site to check the trails there and the horse water access. They found that the horse access from trail 9 to the water tap and bucket was almost blocked with very heavy brush. We cleared the brush from around the water arrow sign up to and around the water tap. More work is needed on the trail in that vicinity and the picnic table needs a good cleanup. They have this project on their list of things to do.

This water trough often gets overlooked as it is somewhat off the beaten path - JOB WELL DONE!!

WOW! Many thanks to ranger Tom Moody and camp hosts Gary and Debbie Moore! Again, they cleared all the weeds and brush from the large cistern (concrete block water trough) on Pine Valley north of FR14. Not only that, but they cleaned out the muck and stuff from the trough and filled with beautiful clean water. Y'all make sure you thank them for their hard work!
