These are good tips to have handy!

What would you do if...your dog ate the bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips that was left out on the kitchen counter?...your cat had a seizure right

A lot of dogs want you to know this -

Instead of a fancy collar and bed? They’d rather have a fenced in yard - even if it has to be small and home made - so they can have off leash time to dog and dig.

Instead of daily neighborhood walks? They’d rather you drive to a dirt road and put them on a 30ft line and let them zig zag and smell as long as they like

Instead of twice daily meals in a bowl? They’d rather have food through enrichment activities that stimulates their brain and their nose.

Instead of basic obedience training? They’d rather have purpose driven training that feeds their genetic make up and needs AND helps them survive and thrive in todays world.

Instead of a human wanting something from them? They’d love a human wanting to understand them better.

Instead of focusing on perfect “heels” and “stays”? They’d love to learn how to be resilient and less stressed and cope with the outside world and our expectations.

Instead of harsh punishments and corrections? They’d prefer proactive management and rewards for good decisions.

We can’t change everything about the lives our dogs are forced to live with us in, but we can make these kinds of changes and see a huge improvement in their quality of life and wellbeing.

This post truly resonated with me. I too, just want to think about the dog.

I was a professional dog trainer for years, but it never sat right with me. I was in it for the dogs, you see, and when you train dogs for roles, you have to think just as much about the position they will fill as you do the dog.

And I just wanted to think about the dog.

That’s why I was there.

This is why I find the current changes we see in the dog training industry so heartening.

Good pet dog trainers are moving into being family dog therapists.

Excellent dog trainers are becoming ethologists.

Dogs are being encouraged to be who they are, and their guardians learn what their dogs need.

We have started watching them for fear, anxiety and pain.

We heartily and scientifically question the backward habit of labelling their struggles as ‘dominance’.

We encourage understanding.

We embrace a dog’s individuality.

We understand that behaviour is just a dog trying to meet their needs in an unnatural environment.

Instead of changing that behaviour, we identify the dog’s needs, and we meet them halfway.

We don’t create an oppressed dog; we create harmony.

We are getting better at it all the time.

Thank dog for that.

Thank you for this meme. Often overlooked is the still stare!

I love, love, love this quote from Nicole Wilde, Author. It's something you hear a lot from people who've been bitten by a dog: "I didn't see it coming."

That's often because the dog was still before the bite, rather than barking, growling and baring their teeth as many people imagine dogs would act. But freezing is something to be aware of with your own dog and others.

What else do you pay attention to in your dog?
