" Oh, it's October 1st!" I exclaimed this morning to no one but myself 😁

The first of the month means different things to different people and to me, it means heartworm medications are due for all 4 of our dogs. I chose the first of the month to keep it the easiest and simplest date to remember. Remembering is ultra important to me because heartworm can kill your dog, cause heart damage, is expensive to treat and the treatment is painful for them.

We adopted 2 of our dogs heartworm positive and had to watch them both go through treatment 💔. They were both adopted from New Hope Pet Rescue and were technically "foster to adopt" dogs until they both completed treatment. Dogs diagnosed with heartworm initially start on 2 medications daily. A steroid medication like prednisone and some sort of sedative medication to keep them calm during treatment. Actual heartworm treatment begins about 1 month later and involves a series of spinal injections. There are other treatment methods but this is the most common and effective treatment.
Adopted 5 years ago, Willow (brindle, on right), was already started on medications when she came home and handled the treatment injections like a champ. The side effects from the medications went on for months for her 🥺 She gained quite a bit of weight from the steroids too.
Chop (on left) was adopted 2 years ago and diagnosed during his initial veterinary work up. He handled his daily medications fine, but he was in a lot of pain after his treatment injections. We also quickly found out the sedation medication the vet uses made him loopy, whinny, and barely consolable. After every injection, I slept on the couch with him at least one night. I was awful for both of us!

I encourage everyone to give their dogs heartworm medication year round and pick the easiest date you can possibly remember. Heck, put a reminder in your phone! There are other options besides monthly oral medications so talk to your vet to find what would work best for you and your pup. Heartworm prevention is truly best for your dogs overall health 🐾🐾
