Every wonder how we determine if your pet has an urinary tract infection? Of course we take into account patient history, the owner's observations and the veterinarian's examination, but here an example of what we do in the lab.
1. Get a urine sample
2. Spin the sample in a centrifuge so any sediment collects at the bottom of the test tube
3. Do a "dip stick" that indicates different values including the presence of blood and the pH of the urine
4. Prepare a slide
5. & 6. View slide under the microscope to determine the amount of (if any) red and white blood cells, epithelial cells, cast type from the kidneys, crystal type and bacteria

Sadly last week we had to say goodbye to our beloved clinic cat, Arnie. He had an aggressive tumor near his trachea that grew rapidly. He was surrounded by staff and humanely euthanized.
We miss him dearly but are left with many happy memories.

In Iowa, bats account for most rabies virus exposure. Post exposure treatment is expensive and requires multiple vaccintations.

Rabies is transmitted through the saliva or brain/nervous system tissue of an infected animal. Wash any wounds from an exposure with soap and water; and seek medical attention. A doctor will decide if rabies vaccination is necessary.

We have returned to curbside service due to the increase in Covid-19 cases. We understand this is hard for some people and pets and we did not make this decision lightly. Our staff works very closely together (no social distancing when you're trimming a chihuahuas nails 😅) and if one of us tests positive for Covid the entire staff will have to quarantine and clinic would temporarily close. We see, on average, 25 pets per day, so if we close that means 100+ pets will go without needed veterinary care.
