What is the RFGS?
The Royal Kennel Club and the University of Cambridge have devised the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS) designed to advise owners if their dog is affected by BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome) and give guidance to breeders on how to lower the risk of producing affected puppies. The program has been licensed by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, and RFGS screening is now available in North America.

The a select number of veterinarians have been approved as OFA RFGS examiners as of Spring 2024.The list will continue grow in numbers and by geography over time, but the roll out is slow as all approved examiners must shadow under an approved examiner in a clinical setting in order to gain familiarity with the exam protocol and gain experience and proficiency in the grading scheme before becoming approved.

COPIED....But very true...please read

ATTENTION NEW PUPPY OWNERS…….
I wanted to touch base on a common issue that breeders come across with new owners.
REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS-
You see the breeders pictures and videos and the pups are all social. They are quiet in the pen. The breeder shows you videos of them being totally relaxed, happy, playful. All looks amazing and you bring your puppy home.
Then reality hits. The puppy may cry in the crate for the first few nights making you tired and agitated. The happy social puppy is refusing to greet the half dozen overly excited friends you invited over to see your new puppy. Or the overly excited playful children you have at home. The puppy refuses to walk on a leash. Many are wondering how did my perfect puppy turn into a nightmare.
So let’s discuss realistic expectations of when a puppy goes home.
-First of all the puppy has been in the breeders home since birth. They had their mother and littermates. They had their routine, were taught expectations and were completely in their comfort zone.
Now suddenly they are taken to a totally new environment. Picture yourself being dropped into an unknown country, in a different part of the world. You know only a few words of their language. Different sounds, smells, temperature, animals and people.
Now in the middle of this we are switching up your routine, possibly decide to have a party with people you don't know, and ask you to do jobs you have no idea about. Overwhelming to say the least.
This is what every puppy goes through when going to their new home. Stress manifests in different forms. From not eating, reluctancy to play, and greet people. Being apprehensive at the vet’s office or as strangers reach for them. Diarrhea, vomiting and depression can occur.
So what can you as a new owner do to help your little one acclimate?
- most puppies take 3-4 weeks to acclimate to their new home. Repeat after me THREE to FOUR WEEKS sometimes even Longer! Not a 1-2 days. I can’t stress this enough about how much time is needed for a dog or puppy to feel comfortable in their new home!
PLEASE limit guests during the first two weeks. We understand you are excited to show off your new baby but they need time to adjust. Plan on waiting 1-2 weeks before inviting people over.
- ask guests to remove their shoes before entering the home to prevent germs from spreading to your new vulnerable puppy.
-have guests sit on the floor/ground and wait until the puppy approaches them. NO squealing and grabbing the puppy, as this is very frightening to them.
- set up a good routine
- restrict the puppy to a small area of the house. This not only reduces them being overwhelmed but also allows you to watch them
- don’t expect a 8-12 week old puppy to walk on a leash. Instead work at home with a leash where they are comfortable. Let them drag the leash, use treats to encourage them to walk with you
- if your puppy is refusing to walk give them a good amount of time.
- understand your puppy needs time to see you as family. Expecting an immediate bond is unrealistic. They will need to establish who the leader of the pack is in order to feel safe and understand the hierarchy of the family unit.
- train your puppy. This not only helps you to bond but the puppy to look to you for direction and input.
-Children are also big stressors to tiny fragile puppies, please keep an eye on children around the puppy at all times. The children may need to learn how fragile the puppy is and how scared it may be.
- lastly, most importantly- BE PATIENT. Don’t declare “omg there’s something wrong with this dog”. Nothing occurs overnight.
Outings should be planned after the puppy has received ALL vaccinations and then only at the puppy’s speed. So while you might imagine a fun walk around the lake in reality your puppy might only be able to handle walking a short distance that day. They may be curious and energetic, they may become overwhelmed. Watch the puppy for cues on how to proceed.
Most outings for me take a long time, as I am often just standing still as the puppy cautiously explores the new environment. Patience is key!
Remember if the puppy was wonderful at the breeder’s house but now is struggling, you as the owner, need to help the puppy adjust which takes time, patience and training. Have realistic expectations and give the puppy positive feedback and happy experiences. Each puppy is an individual, don’t compare your current puppy to past pets and judge their behavior based on how another dog handled things. Lastly, try to see thing’s from a puppy’s perspective and adjust situations accordingly.
Love your puppy and they will love you 100 times more in return.

**Upcoming litter for June/July 2024**

We have moved some litter plans around , our female Rowena will be paired with Ollie from Myths and Legends Siberian Huskies 🥰 he has been health tested , those are below. Our female also has been tested you can find those results in previous posts, our photos section, or feel free to message me! Again, we would prefer some people who are looking to show a pup but not every pup in a litter would fit the ring lifestyle so those who are more active for a sport home or even just a pet whose only job is to be the dog of the house 💜 we do puppy culture and will have the pups evaluated at 7 weeks old and will match homes accordingly. Keep in mind, these test scores arnt an exact science and more of a guide to help us breeders pick the right home for the puppies. Please contact me if you'd like a puppy from this litter and what you're looking to do with the puppy as well as about yourself, family, and home life 💓

**UPDATE**

We have moved some things around and will be delaying this litter until next January/February 2025. Which may work out better for some of those who are interested in this litter due to moving/loss in the family/other things 💜

UPCOMING LITTER ANNOUNCEMENT

I'll be pairing miss Rowena to this handsome boy in June or July, whenever her heat comes in. That means puppies will be born around August/September and ready to go around October/November. Both have had health testing completed. I dont have the males records on hand but I can get them, he is older and has passed every year hes gone in. This will be one of his final litters if not his last litter. He's located in the UK and I'll be shipping his s***m here and inseminating my bitch via AI. Which may mean a smaller litter due to it not being a natural breeding but we shall see. I am VERY excited for this litter. We ourselves will be looking to hold back a prospect or 2. This is looking to be our last siberian litter for a few years as we previously mentioned in an older post that we are looking to step away from siberians and into different breeds. We are excited for the future so stay tuned 🥰💜

Looking for potential show homes. Please message me if you're interested 😊

Voodoo is looking to retire and make some new lifelong friends that can rub his belly nightly . He's up to date on his shots, and he will be neutered before being placed. He's good with other dogs and kids. Cats are iffy, He's never been around them until here, but he has done very well around them. I still would prefer a home with no cats.hes very well mannered and listens well. He's a Ukrainian import, and he's 4.5 years old. Please reach out with any questions 🐾

When I tell you guys breeding is not for the faint of heart, I really mean it. I'm glad to make friends with like-minded breeders like myself 🥰 then there are those who don't fully understand or make the wrong decision, which greatly impacts others. Makes me question sometimes why I even bother. Tonight, I got confirmation that a puppy (not bred or produced here) produced by the new stud i just bought (Voodoo) has some pretty serious eye conditions that are genetic.

"But he passed his eye exam?" You may ask, that is correct. He did pass. Voodoo himself is not affected but he is a carrier. When bred to another carrier he will have some affected puppies.

This also cannot be tested for, not yet. It's why we as breeders must physically take our dogs in yearly to have their eyes inspected. So when something does come up we know when and can remove that dog and offspring.

This is very unfortunate for all involved here. His previous owner and breeder have been made aware. Voodoo may be available to a pet home thru me pending what his previous owner would like to do, he will be neutered. If you're interested please let me know, prefer a home without cats as he hasn't had experience with them until coming here however he has done very well being around them.

Moving forward we have no stud lined up for Rowena in August when her next pending heat is. We may not be breeding her this year. At this time I'm not looking to add another siberian to the kennel.

Thank you guys 🐾

Good news, both Rowena and Voodoo passed their eye tests! 🐕 we did notice tho in one of Voodoos eyes he has some damage , scratch etc. We also found out Rowena has distichiasis however a very mild case as we never knew as she's never had any eye issues 🥹😅 this just means she can not be bred to another affected /carrier. I've attached 2 photos for those who would like to take a quick read in case yall have questions 😊 next will be hips and elbows 🤞wish us luck

This will be long, but I want to explain just a bit in hopes of helping yall understand my thoughts and decisions 💜🥰

Hey guys! As some of you may have noticed a while back, I changed my name from "Banana’s Tails Siberian Huskies " to what it is currently, Banana’s Tails Companions. I will be stepping away from Siberians a little bit, not completely. I have an old knee injury that has not gotten any better but worse when I retore the ligaments and such inside the knee from a simple, small guided jump this past winter. In simple terms, the indepent energy the breed has is not a match for me personally or physically, and that's a tough pill to swallow. That being said, I have a wonderful female, Rowena, I'd like to continue moving forward with in the conformation world as well as hold back a prospect or 2 to move forward with. We do have a male currently that we will be health tested, pending if he passes, he will be bred to Rowena her next heat. If not, we will not be purchasing another husky. We will use an outside stud and then keep a pup back and move on from there. This means that i will only have a select few litters in the next coming years. Otherwise, i will not have Siberian pups available. Please understand that Siberians will always hold a huge spot in my soul 🐾

I'd also like to talk about the recent changes in my life that will help understand and reflect where I am today. Over a year ago, I separated from my significant other I was with for 10 years. During that 10 years, we put some roots down, a house, some kids, and some dogs. Dogs we discussed and got together. During the divorce, I had to put everyone's needs at the front, which meant downsizing. This was a big turning point in my life, and it was very difficult for me to navigate thru. I've been with someone since i was 17 years old. I couldn't forsee the future, but i had to make sure it was good for the dogs, even if that meant not being with me. Housing opportunities in the area had a cap on 2 dogs. Meaning i had to pick 2 dogs. Unfortunately fate/destiny whatever you'd like to call it decided to also show her hand. 1 dog had failing test scores(Rafiki), and another tragically passed away. I found wonderful homes for everyone but Rowena. Had Vitani not passed away unexpectedly, she was the other dog I chose to remain with me (due to 2 dog housing limits), I had already found homes for the other dogs. Fortunately for me, I got to make my housing situation work out, and I didn't have to move. Unfortunately for me, I predicted and prepared for not being able to have my animals. This whole ordeal was very hard on me both physically and mentally. I got very sick and lost 70+ pounds. I'm an animal enthusiast, and my life is my animals. But I understood that I had to make the tough calls in order to be where we are today. I am still in daily contact with the dogs 💜

To end this on a happy note, I'd like to happily announce a new partner to Banana’s Tails Companions, I will be getting married this June to an amazing man. Fate knew to send me someone this time who also has a deep passion for dogs. Together, we've started on showing classes, and he has started hunting sessions with his new puppy, Kaluwa.

We grow from the things we go thru. I did a lot of personal growth, and I'm proud of myself. There's a LOT more to the story here than what I've written. So much more. However, the past is in the past, and that's where i plan on leaving it. We do plan on working with different breeds moving forward. He will be working with hunting breeds, and i will be working with a smaller canine breed or two. We will announce what soon 🥰 Thank you to those who have been with and stuck with me all these years🐾

We don't know a vet hospital that likes the retractable leash. It is a nightmare. There is no control causing humans and dogs to become injured in the process. 😫 Stick with a traditional leash and everyone is much safer. 😉

Banana’s Tails Kennel Info

Hi guys! Here’s a bit about my kennel and what I do,

Here at Banana’s Tails I’m a firm believer in health testing. Therefore any dogs that I own will have the following tests done BEFORE being bred,

Listed below are tests anyone can have done as soon as they bring the puppy home.
