Tomorrow starts our Staff Appreciation Week!

All week we will be celebrating with meals, staff events (this year it's a movie night!), and gifts showing our gratitude for the people we know make up the best staff any clinic could ask for.

However, some of the best staff appreciation comes from our amazing clients - if you could, please share a note of appreciation in the comments for our staff, and we will share it with them all at the end of the week!

It's a big one today!

Today Shelly is celebrating FIFTEEN (15!) years at our clinic as a veterinary assistant!

Over the years, Shelly has learned and grown so much, that now she is able to pass that knowledge down and teach those hard earned skills to the next generation of veterinary assistants and technicians, as one of our Technical Team Mentors. She is a phenomenal leader and example for all new and old hires alike. We are so lucky to have Shelly!

Today is a big day of celebration!

Anne has been here for 16 years today - and today is also her last day with us, as she sails off into retirement! Anne has been a big part of our clinic for so long, that it will be pretty strange without her around. She is one of the biggest reasons that our clinic is so clean and well kept - we are going to have some pretty big shoes to fill!

We are going to miss Anne at our clinic so much, and we hope you will join us in wishing her the best in her retirement!

FIFTY. PERCENT. 😲

We've seen a massive increase in tick disease in our area over the last few years - right now, 50% of the dogs we test for tick borne diseases are POSITIVE for one or more tick disease. These are not all dogs with symptoms - most of our tests are ran on healthy dogs as part of their annual screening.

Looking at the positive rates for all tick diseases over the years:

2019: 27.29%
2020: 29.83%
2021: 29.83%
2022: 39.84%
2023: 53.3%
2024: 50% so far

As you can see, from 2022 onward we've seen some significant changes in our tick positive rates! But, the other significant change we've seen over time is WHICH tick disease is most prevalent in our dogs. Traditionally, Lyme disease has been the most common tick disease in our dog population, but recently, that trend has completely flipped:

2019: 12.5% positive for Lyme, 14.4% positive for Anaplasma
2020: 15% positive for Lyme, 14.2% positive for Anaplasma
2021: 12.2% positive for Lyme, 17.1% positive for Anaplasma
2022: 12.2% positive for Lyme, 27.5% positive for Anaplasma
2023: 12.1% positive for Lyme, 40.31% positive for Anaplasma
2024: 9.1% positive for Lyme, 40.4% positive for Anaplasma

Again, 2022 is a year with changes happening - with Anaplasma becoming more and more prevalent from that time on.

❓ Now, what's with the change? Two things:
1. More people are vaccinating for Lyme than ever, which is great! It's helping drop or hold steady those Lyme positive numbers.

2. We've had some unseasonably warm springs, falls, and winters over the last few years. Ticks are active anytime the weather is above freezing! We pull off ticks basically all year round in the clinic - but most people use their tick preventative products for about 6 months out of the year.

πŸ“£ What can I do??
1. We really highly recommend using a tick preventative product for ALL 12 months of the year. Ticks are active anytime the weather is above freezing, so we need to be aggressive with our preventative products. Preventative products kill the tick BEFORE they can transmit the disease, which is what makes them so key in prevention - even the most aware person could miss removing a tiny tick or two.

2. Be diligent - check for ticks anytime your dog is out and about, especially if they are running through tall grass! Ears, bellies, between toes and paw pads - those are some favorite spots, but ticks can attach anywhere. If you find a tick, remove it immediately.

3. Keep vaccinating for Lyme disease - the last thing we want to see is for those numbers to creep back up too.

4. Test for tick diseases annually as part of your dog's preventative care program. If your dog does test positive, but isn't having symptoms yet, the treatment is relatively easy and cost effective. Pets that come in symptomatic often have longer roads to recovery and higher costs associated with their treatment.
