🐾 Spay/Neuter Awareness Month is celebrated in February to educate about the benefits of spaying + neutering pets.

The month also includes World Spay Day, which is celebrated on the last Tuesday of February!

Why is it important + how should you celebrate ❓

Spaying/Neutering:

🐾 Prevents unwanted litters, reducing the number of homeless animals + overpopulation in the state.

🐾Promotes responsible pet ownership and reduces the burden on shelters.

🐾Lowers the risk of cancers and infections in pets

🐾 Pets are less likely to roam, mark, or act aggressively

🐱

❓ Will my pet’s behavior change after surgery?

👉 Spaying or neutering is unlikely to change temperament, basic personality, levels of playfulness and general activity.

🐾 However, it can have a positive effect. Some behavioral issues, especially, sexual behaviors such as mounting, howling and the urge to roam-are reduced following surgery.

🐾Male dogs and cats will be less likely to fight. Female dogs and cats will no longer go into heat.

🐕 Don't let the low cost fool you, we may be widely affordable but our quality of care remains at the highest level.

As we begin the new year, I want to thank all our supporters for making 2024 a successful year! Thanks to your help, we performed nearly 15,000 spay/neuter surgeries, a key step in reducing companion animal overpopulation in 2025.

Since opening in June 2008, Alabama Spay Neuter has sterilized over 196,000 dogs and cats in North Central Alabama. Many of these pets would not have been spayed or neutered without our Clinic’s programs, which are made possible by the support of our donors and animal welfare partners.

Our Family Assistance Program and Shelby Humane’s low-cost spay/neuter program help qualified households get their pets fixed for just $25 each. To qualify, a household member must be enrolled in a government assistance program (e.g., Medicaid, Disability, SNAP). Participants can have up to three pets sterilized for a $25 co-pay per pet. These offers are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Family Assistance Program is available locally and for areas served by our monthly transports, while Shelby Humane’s program is available to qualified residents of Shelby County.

Thank you again for making 2024 a rewarding year for pets and families in our community. We look forward to an exciting 2025!

Sincerely,
Mark Nelson
Executive Director

🐕 January is “Walk Your Pet Month.” Check out how ASN can help you + your pets enjoy it to the fullest 👇

We all love spending times on walks with our furry friends, taking in all the sights, sounds + smells!

But did you know walking an animal that isn’t fixed can cause unnecessary problems and inconveniences?

⭐️ Unneutered male dogs can become aggressive due to high testosterone levels. They may fight with other male dogs, attempt to pursue a female dog, or even attack people.

⭐️Unspayed female dogs are at risk of being bothered by males or even becoming unmanageable due to the urge to mate.

This month & every month, give you + your pets the gift of calm, relaxing, fun + fulfilling walks.

Just had your pet spayed or neutered? 🐾 ❤️ Here are a few simple post-surgery care tips to ensure a smooth recovery:

1. Keep them calm and limit their activity for the first few days.

2. Prevent licking or biting at the stitches—an e-collar can help!

3. Provide a cozy, quiet space for rest and recovery.

4. Monitor the incision for any swelling or discharge, and contact your vet if you notice anything unusual.

5. Keep them hydrated and offer small, easily digestible meals. Got questions? 📞 Give us a call at 205- 956-0012.

ASN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers spay/neuter services to Central Alabama.
