The Best Horses in Heaven, They Have No Tail

The best horses in Heaven
they have no tail.
This is a rule they all know
without fail.
For when a new horse arrives
with a short cut bob,
they all know that this horse
did a very good job.

His owner could not bear
to part with her friend
so she saved his tail,
wrapped in ribbons
and in braids,
to hold with his memory
in a very loving way.

To enter Heaven
without a tail
is an honor,
a message,
that without fail
announces to everyone,
far and wide
that this horse
was more than a wonderful ride.

But this horse was loved and cherished by one
and when his time serving on this Earth was done
he left behind
a broken heart
and a soul
from which he never will part.

So true!

I almost made a classic farm mom mistake- underestimating a farm child and what they can do.

In the driver’s seat of this truck is our 19 year old daughter. We had to move some calves from the hutches to inside the barn and she wanted to use the trailer versus walk them in. I never learned to drive the trailer so I couldn’t do it but she has watched her dad hook it up for years and was pretty sure she could figure it out. She called Dad and he gave he said go for it. Still nervous, I asked her to grab her uncle and have him oversee her. He is in the passenger seat and not only guided her through properly hooking it up but also helped her back up to the barn door.

I won’t show you the goofy pictures she had me take to show her dad but I will say the look of pride on her face was priceless. She reminded this older farm mom that farm kids are tough, have learned to do by watching and are by far some of the most capable young adults on the planet. I’m pretty proud of all 4 of my farmers’ daughters.

For the past few years, the DNR has been working hand and hand with the Equine Trails Subcommittee to explore opportunities for shoreline horseback riding along Michigan's Great Lakes. Specifically, pilot rides that have been hosted at Muskegon and Silver Lake State Parks.

In the fall of 2021, the DNR partnered with the Michigan Horse Council to host a 2-week pilot Great Lakes Equestrian Shoreline Ride. This pilot helped the DNR Parks and Recreation Division determine if a seasonal riding opportunity would be feasible at Silver Lake State Park. These opportunities were available to riders that brought their own horses.
