Dog Park, corner of Ayer St & Bonnie St in Ironwood, MI

The Ironwood Dog Park is a project of H.O.P.E. Animal Shelter and the Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park, and located within the Miners Memorial Heritage Park within walking distance of H.O.P.E. The Ironwood Dog Park is funded by activity donations and suggested donations for dog park use. A double gated entrance using a modular ke

nnel. We chose this design for a number of reasons: A fairly simple installation using volunteers to provide a contained area to let dogs run, the design fits in with the historic ambience of the Miners Park, and is a low cost solution to assess the interest of a dog park in ironwood. We have a list of upgrades for the future when the dog park proves successful. Your help is sincerely appreciated to make the Ironwood Dog Park a success!

New bench at the park and we're guessing/hoping someone left the rock as a thank-you for replacing the busted up one!

Lawn mowing will start next week, not sure what day though.

As always, please clean up after your dogs, plenty of bags and we're getting back on the regular park check up, taking away garbage, etc.

We had not checked the donations box for a while, but that's all caught up too. What we gathered from donations actually paid for the new bench so THANK YOU all for that!!

** extra ask of park users: there's some ankle twisting holes being dug by dogs. No problem with dogs wanting to dig, but could you maybe kick the dirt back into the hole before you leave the park?

Dog Park users - be aware! No hunting between 10 am and 2 pm so those might be the best choice in hours to take your dog to the dog park. Miner's Memorial Park is around 100 acres in size and the dog park is a little over 1 acre at the very north east corner.

We moved the picnic table OFF to the side again - your heart was in the right spot moving it in, but with the rain we had there's no way the gravel will dry up for SEVERAL DAYS!! That surface should harden up first. Looked like footprints had sunk in a couple inches. Thanks.

Done with spreading 15 yards of pit-run gravel. There are a few wheel marks from the skidster - hard to avoid with the wet grass. The guys recommend that we do NOT put the tables out there until the weather is nice for a day or 2 - let it dry and harden up - quite a bit of clay so should tighten up OK.
Once tables go onto this area, please place them more in the center, not at the edges - otherwise, we'll just cause the same issue with wearing down the surrounding grass - make sense? Good enough for now - we'll make a judgement call on more gravel later in the season.

HEADS UP! - working in dog park 5/19 and 5/20. We'll have a load of crushed rock delivered Wednesday 5/19 to the spot where the picnic tables are currently sitting. We're renting a skidster on Thursday 5/20 to spread it in that area. So we'll be moving tables out of the way on Wednesday (or anyone using the park is certainly welcome to do that if you have a couple people with you!!) and using a skidster on Thursday. Might not want to bring your dogs to the park on Thursday in particular.

Nice to see winter-time park users. Recommend watching dogs closely at this time of year - snow build up makes for easy fence jumping!

Kevin Podraza, left, and Nicole Kuklinski, of Ironwood, and Nicole Hissa, of Hurley, gather on Monday at the Iron King Dog Park to have a family reunion for three related Australian shepherds - Rooster, Eva and Tekla - along with a black lab, Benelli.

Thinking about small gravel or wood chips for the dirt area under the shade trees. Everyone congregates there for the shade and the soil isn't all that great for getting more grass to grow. More people suggest wood than gravel, so will probably start looking into getting some delivered.

Hound Dog Hike meeting is this Wed evening at Rigoni's Bar & Restaurant so I'll bring up the subject of wood or gravel then.

HOUND DOG HIKE happening on Sunday, Sept 8th. Hike will probably start and end at the park and we will NOT allow off leash in the park for a couple of hours. Just giving everyone a heads up. I'll have more info after our planning meeting on Aug 14th!!

UPDATE: Person with the white dogs was in town temporarily; I believe they've already left the area.

Got a PM last night from a friend and spotted a complaint on another FB page about a woman with 2 large white dogs who don't seem to be exactly friendly and the woman is ignoring them, except for evidently grooming them in the park!!
Do that in your own yard please or pick up the clumps and use the garbage cans.
Common sense and polite behavior - it applies to dogs and HUMANS, right?

From Friday afternoon. Been a while since I've been there with my 2 and had others show up! I'm always a little nervous - one of mine thinks he's the assigned Playground Monitor (takes the job very seriously too!) and the other has Small Dog Syndrome. Overall, it went pretty well once they all got the initial meet n greet out of the way!!

Sounds like there is a broken seat of the white table in the park. Be careful using the table! Not sure if it's fix-able yet. If you know of anyone with a regular picnic table that's in decent shape that is willing to donate, please have them contact HOPE or just respond on this page. Thanks!

Bag dispensers were full; I didn't find any land mines to clean up (didn't patrol every inch tho!!). Jack found a couple of beat up, chewed up balls and had fun running around; Max did the slow patrol, on guard duty thing he does!!

Feel free (PLEASE!) to post photos of you and your dogs at the park.

Revised donation sign. Whenever you have a spare buck or two, please stuff them in the top slot. We do appreciate it!!

Let's not run, jump or play at the Dog Park; instead we'll VERY SLOWLY patrol the perimeter and SNIFF every possible square inch - it's what we do at the Park!

I spoke to the "man in charge of signs" yesterday and he told me that the order is placed - not positive of delivery date yet, but we're making progress. FYI: the official name of the park is: Iron King Dog Park.

The main sign will include some historical info as to the Iron King Mine and old photos of what the area looked like back in the day.

I put out the "call for a standing committee" a minute ago and earlier today on the HOPE Animal Shelter page. We've had a couple people respond. I've started a FB Group and will add potential committee members to that so we can keep this page for posting fun stuff & photos from the Park here and post housekeeping/maintenance/building stuff on the committee group page.

06/03/2019

HOPE Animal Shelter & Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park (FMMHP) are creating a standing committee for the Iron King Dog Park. Looking for 3-4 interested individuals. Can be dog owners, neighborhood people or civic minded people. Will not be time consuming, meeting 5-6 times a year, depending on goals, projects, etc.
If interested, please comment or PM HOPE.

Hello all - the metal box sitting beside the entrance will be for donations. Needs to be painted and properly installed. We've just finalized the design for signage and that order will be placed shortly! Hoping we can get all this done in the next couple of weeks.

There may be a Live Trap being set up somewhere outside the Dog Park entrance. Little, recently adopted, scared dog has been spotted in the area.
Please don't disturb the trap. Person who owns trap will handle it....

Names for the dog park - - - We've heard the mine in the Newport Location was once called Mt. Hope, but Ivan Hellen told us yesterday that it was called the Iron King Mine prior to that.
Maybe "Iron King Dog Park" ????
