Preparing in advance:

Make sure your pets – cats and dogs alike – have identification tags with up-to-date information.

If your pets aren’t already microchipped, talk with your veterinarian about microchipping. This simple procedure can greatly improve your chances of getting your pets back if they become lost.

If your pet has historically been anxious on this holiday, or if you have reason to expect potentially harmful reactions, consider behavioral therapy to desensitize your pet and reduce the risk of problems. Some pets may need medication. Consult your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist.

Make sure the environment is safe and secure. If your neighbors set off fireworks at an unexpected time, is your yard secure enough to keep your pet contained? Evaluate holiday, consider leaving your pets at home with a pet sitter or boarding them in a kennel. If you need to bring them with you, be sure you know how to keep them safe.

Center is one of the most useful things that you can teach your dog. You can use Center as your superpower, allowing you to get your dog into a position where they are close to you for reassurance and you can feed them to help with calmness.

Center is amazing for managing dogs that are nervous or reactive to other dog, people or vehicles. It enables you to take away their line of sight of the thing they are nervous of, and gives them something positive to focus on instead. Once you get really good at it you will even be able to walk away from the situation in center.

Training Blu to be offleash because she has really mastered her obedience and does an excellent heel all day long every walk!

Your dog must be properly trained to behave well and stay right by your side or under your voice control at all times when it is off the leash.

Here we practice “walk with me” while having Blu also practice ”look” while walking right next to me.

Your dog should also learn to value you above any distractions. Ideally, you will teach your dog to look at you (and to check in with you) any time a distraction comes along. Practicing the "look" command while your dog is on the leash around a lot of distractions will help out tremendously. And now it comes into play when training offleash.

What great work she is doing learning and making good decisions every step of the way.
