We pulled sweet Luigi from DAS the other day. He had been with them since 12/20/2024 and is so sweet but a little freaked out by the shelter environment. Fennec and Shrimp: A Love Story in Three Parts ♥
Here's a sneak peek into how we perform what's called "cat-testing" at DFWHS! This is pretty much exactly what it sounds like- we slowly introduce our canine residents to a staff member's personal pets (who are fairly compensated in treats for their efforts) to determine if they would do well in a cat-friendly home. In case you can't tell, Fennec doesn't seem to mind them one bit 🥰 So if you have a feline friend and have been interested in adding an extra set of paws to the family, Fennec would be a great fit!

Meet Batman! This sweet boy is currently suffering from what's called happy tail syndrome. (Check out the bandages in the pics!) Happy tail syndrome occurs when a dog is constantly wagging their tail and bumping it against hard objects, like the walls of their kennel. The tail can be bruised, cut, or even bleed in some cases. When this happens with one of our residents, we typically will keep them in our back office until the tail can heal fully.
Batman thankfully has found his forever home where he can heal, but happy tail syndrome is more common in the shelter than you'd think. 🚨This is where you come in! 🚨When you foster a shelter pet, you can help dogs like Batman find their forever families from the comfort of your home 🏠 DFWHS provides you with all the basic supplies you'll need like kennels, leashes, and harnesses, as well as covers the cost of any medical care your foster may need. 🐾Alfalfa: 8 yr. old long hair chihuahua. Fully vetted. Length of stay 5 days.
🐾This sweet senior is *THE* definition of a lap dog. He loves nothing more than to be cuddled up in your arms wherever you go. If you aren't carrying him, he's never far from your heels ❤ He doesn't seem to mind the other dogs in the office, so if you have a current pet feel free to bring them up for a playdate!

About Our Shelter

Founded in 1967 by four Irving residents who saw a need to care for stray and abandoned pets, DFW Humane Society has remained committed to rescuing neglected and unwanted pets and giving them a second chance in life through adoption.

Each year with contributions from compassionate and concerned donors, DFW Humane Society rescues and finds homes for almost 1000 pets. While at our shelter, our pets receive top-quality daily care and food, medical attention, when necessary, at local veterinary clinics, and love, interaction, and enrichment from both shelter staff and a host of dedicated volunteers.

With help from donors, we are also fortunate to have the Guardian Angel Fund, a restricted fund used to pay for extraordinary medical expenses such as heartworm treatments, broken limbs, and other higher-cost medical procedures.
