Today’s Pet of the Week goes to our beloved Birthday! If you have been following her story, you know she has been through so much within the past few weeks. She is so resilient and stronger than ever. Yesterday she went through surgery in hopes of continued healing and improvement. Please keep the well wishes coming for Birthday as she has a road of recovery ahead 🤍🐈‍⬛🐾. Special thanks to all who assisted her; the fosters, rescue, doctors, techs, and good samaritans, you’re very appreciated!!

With the cold temperatures and snow arriving, we want to remind you of the Pennsylvania laws relating to animals left outside in winter months. According to PA law Title 18, Section 5532 Subsection (a)(2) (Neglect of animal), animals must have access to clean and sanitary shelter and protection from the weather. Their shelter must be sufficient to permit them to retain body heat and keep them dry.

DOGS/CATS: For smaller animals a proper and adequate dog house that is airtight, and should be off the ground several inches, must be provided. The dog house must have a solid roof and floor and four solid sides. The opening should be just wide enough for the animal to gain entry. The dog house MUST have straw or cedar chips as bedding and a flap (rubber mud flap, tarp, thick plastic, etc.) must be affixed to the dog house door to keep the heat inside the dog house. Do not use soft beddings (blankets, pillows, or dog beds) as they can become wet and freeze and could become entangled in the chain. The dog house should face east, away from the incoming weather.

LIVESTOCK: For livestock, proper shelter would be access to an open barn, a three-sided lean to with a roof, or a run in off the side of a barn. The shelter should face east, away from the incoming weather. A tree line is not adequate shelter by PA law. There are no specifications in the PA Animal Cruelty Laws in regards to size of pasture or shelter, however, the shelter must accommodate the number of animals you have.

FOOD/WATER: During the winter, check the animals’ water several times a day to ensure it’s not freezing or purchase a heated water bowl (online or at a feed mill or tractor supply store). An animal outside in the winter should be provided with a heavier diet to withstand the colder weather--your animal’s food should be doubled.
