CHOOSING A GROOMER
The role of our pets have changed within the last decade or so, making them a family member. This change has created an explosion in the pet industry, from food to veterinarian care and everything in between. This is also evident in the grooming trade. Salons are popping up on every corner. So how do you choose the perfect fit for your pet's needs?
PRICING
This is a big factor, however, is not the most important. As with other industries, salons need to price competitively in order to remain a viable business. This does not mean that every salon will charge X dollars for a specific breed. Quality of service and products will affect pricing as with any other business.
CLEANLINESS
Go visit the grooming salon and check it out. Does it look and smell clean? It shouldn't smell like a dirty wet animal. Are there any odors that don't dissipate in a few minutes? Ask about their cleaning and disinfecting routines.
ORDERLY ENVIRONMENT
This doesn't mean quiet nor does it mean not busy. When dropping off your pet for service you should given an approximate time for pick up. Your pet should not have to wait an unreasonable amount of time for services. This is why scheduling is beneficial. Scheduling allows for an adequate amount of time to provide the requested services.
PRODUCTS
Does the salon use quality products specifically designed for your pets needs? Shampoos should promote healthy skin and coat yet be an effective cleaner. Oatmeal is not the go to shampoo for every condition a pet may have.
GROOMER
This is definitely the MOST important factor in your decision making. Are they certified? Do they participate in continuous education? Are they willing to put in the time and effort to be the best they can be? Even though you don't plan on enrolling Fluffy in the Westminster Kennel Club dog show doesn't mean he shouldn't be in a breed specific trim.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Most every salon has a page. Look at their pictures. First and foremost, do the pets look CLEAN? Are the grooms symmetrical and even? Are their grooms breed appropriate. Take a peek at the background to see if it is clean. A picture (or lack of them) tells a thousand words.
