A couple things to note about this clip:
1. When Cowboy’s admirer asks if he should pat himself Jen suggests just getting excited instead. This is important. If the human were to pat his chest, inviting Cowboy up, that WOULD be an acceptable time for Cowboy to jump. We already know he will jump as soon as he gets permission so we don’t really need to put any more of those types of repetitions in. What Cowboy DOES need reps of is receiving physical attention WITHOUT jumping. People tend to get excited when they are petting beautiful wiggle-butts like Cowboy. Too much excitement leads to jumping. So by creating too much excitement on purpose Jen has created an opportunity for Cowboy to learn NOT to jump without invitation.
2. Always end on a positive note! In the beginning Cowboy does jump twice. Both times he immediately receives a correction from Jen and stops receiving physical attention from his admirer. After that second repetition he realizes what behavior the humans do not like and stops exhibiting it. He does get excited a few times and whip his head around like he is about to jump, but he controls his impulse and stays on the ground. Cowboy gets to receive more praise than he was when he was jumping, which will motivate him to control that impulse in the future! Jen makes sure to end the activity while Cowboy’s body language is loose, happy, and proud.
