Q:"Why do we litter box train or potty pad train
puppies"

A: The biggest reason we do this isn't because we are lazy nor do we want full grown dogs using litter pans.
The reason for this is we want puppies to learn at an early age there is a place we eat, a place we sleep/play and a place we potty.
To put them in a crate at too early of an age is setting them up for failure.
Why?
1. Most people buy a crate that is far too large so the puppy has room to go to the bathroom and lay in a different area.
2. Puppies like baby's have very small bladders/digestive tracts and usually poop/pee. within minutes of eating or drinking.
We suggest using a play pen and litter box until a pup is 4-6 months old for the extended periods when puppies can not be let outside.
This doesn't mean you can't start crate training them when you are around the house. It's actually a great thing to start young because it will help prevent separation anxiety and get them used to it.
Crates shouldn't be used as punishment! You want that to be their safe place.

Remember puppies learn faster from positive reinforcement. You don't always need to reward with a food treat.
They would much rather have a "goooood boy/girl" and a belly rub!
