Black dogs do something a little different to your heart.
🖤🖤🖤
Why are foundations important?? Here it is! One amazing example. His owner has been on her game with basic obedience, like Sit. So I ask Riley to “sit” which means SIT until I say his release word. And this allows us to begin some threshold training.
🐾🩵
If he didn’t have a decent foundation in this area, it would have made this process take much longer. Instead I worked with him for 2 ten minute rounds and he began to understand the threshold of the door.
🐾🩵
This foundation also helps because if he breaks his sit, and I add pressure he knows that he needs to go back into his sit- if the foundation wasn’t there, he would y know what to do next so I’d have to redirect him and hold slightly more pressure on him to achieve the behavior we need.
🐾🩵
This may look like a fancy trick.. but it’s really teaching this 7 month old a potentially life saving behavior.
So many fun activities this morning to get breakfast. I’ll admit I should do this more often. With the weather coming in and 2 you g kids my dogs are not getting the stimulation they need or deserve.
🌦️❄️
Dogs have 6 Drives. These “drives” are outlets that help them stay happy and fulfilled.
1)scavenging
2)hunting
3)dissecting
4)chewing
5)digging
6)barking
🌦️❄️
All dogs are different, and dogs can even change the order of importance of these drives as they get older so it’s important to know your dog and what he/she needs to be happy.
🌦️❄️
These “rainy day games” help satisfy most of these drives, and Burger girl here spent about 40 minutes going through all these activities! That’s almost an hour of stimulation and WORK for her mind. And I did maybe 5 minutes of prep.
❗️off switch ❗️
… who’s kidding, anyone who has a working dog breed knows there is NO such thing 😂
•
But let me tell you a secret 🤫
•
With a little direction, proper communication, fun games, lots of rewards and A LOT of patience, you can begin to uncover a dog who is little more …
Responsive? Respectful? Focused? Not as “annoying”? Calmer? 😉
•
If you know Fries… you know she GOES. And if there is a toy? Well, game over for any focus on me or what I’m telling her .. like “follow ME, not that stranger throwing a ball for THIER dog NOT YOU”
•
We haven’t done as much work as I’d like, but that’s ok! Life is life. We will continue to work on her “off switch” with the time we have.
•
But can we stop for a moment to appreciate how FAR she has come? We don’t have a “before” video.. but I’m sure you can imagine what it’s like if you have a dog like this of your own. And if you don’t? Well.. ball is more important than me, than food, than life itself!! … you get the picture 😜

New client !
Reason for signing up: Reactivity Towards dogs.
•
Crates, place mats, targets, and food are some of my greatest tools when working with a reactive dog.
•
These two did an awesome job today! I was expecting a reaction to these two pups walking by, as they were looking at us a whining a little bit… but NOPE! This little munchkin had other plans… plans to focus on her owner and earn praise and chicken!
•
If you have a dog who is reactive, let’s get a consultation in!

❗️HUGE transformation❗️
Little Drake is not so little anymore, and I’m pleased to share his and his owners story.
Drake had a major case of resource guarding - very common, but VERY dangerous! His parents noticed the behavior and JUMPED on it!
•
When we first met,I used a pole with some slight pressure - to mimic petting, to see exactly what I was dealing with. This lasted maybe 1-3 minutes so I could see how sensitive he was. From there, this family had a very structured routine each day (which got more and more strict as we continued to meet)- including limited affection, hand feeding and obedience training EVERY DAY. These guys never gave up, even though some of it was a bit scary... they pushed forward and worked hard!
•
Any now look at the little guy! I forgot to get a video on our last day together.. but I was able to stick my fingers in his mouth, examine his ears, pet his hind and take the Prized item away ( he even willing left behind that item to come get some lives from us!) - all with no reaction.
•
I’m so thankful to have had the time with this amazing family and help them learn how to properly counter-condition this behavior AND set them up for (potential) future unwanted behaviors along with some basic every day training.

Burger and Fries enjoying our snow day ❄️❄️
Burger tends to be a ‘tougher’ player than fries.. so we are teaching her more fun happens when she has her soccer ball (or any toy) in her mouth!
Burger loving the snow !!
(Making sure to have fun with the long lead, as she is not completely reliable off leash, but still deserves freedom ! )
