This handsome guy is "Kaz", a young Border Collie who loves to work and play hard whether it is herding his cows, riding on the tractor with dad, swimming or playing fetch for hours. Unfortunately antifreeze has damaged his kidneys. Kaz was referred to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Dialysis4Pets Extracorporeal Therapies and Blood Purification Unit from our friends at VCA Shoreline Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center after traditional medical management was not improving his kidney failure.

Without dialysis to clean his blood of all the toxins the kidneys are supposed to eliminate, Kaz would not have survived. Instead of facing a heartbreaking euthanasia, Kaz was able to leave the hospital after just a couple of days and now comes to see us every three days for chronic dialysis.

Between his dialysis sessions, Kaz continues to work the cattle, swim in the creek, play lots of ball and live the high quality life a young dog should. This life would not be possible without the life saving care we provide for him. Today marks the 20th blood purification (dialysis) treatment we have provided over the past two months and Kaz is currently snoozing for the 5 hours of treatment. He gets love, kisses, treats and games during his treatments and has touched all of our hearts with his great joy for life. Cheers to Kaz and his support network who drive him to us from 4 hours away!

This sweet 2 year old Shih Tsu named Zoey came to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Extracorporeal Blood Purification Unit all the way (5 hours!) from our friends at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists for life saving therapeutic plasma exchange for her severe IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia). Zoey was able to receive most of her treatments as an outpatient so she could be with her loving family in between sessions. After three treatments where we exchanged her diseased plasma for fresh plasma, we effectively removed enough of the immune weapons (immunoglobulins/antibodies) that were causing her red cells to be destroyed and she was deemed in remission. You can see the color of her plasma in the photo improving with each treatment!
Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) can be used for IMHA and other immune mediated diseases (myasthenia gravis, pemphigus, polyradiculoneuritis, others) to reduce the antibody burden and stabilize the condition.
TPE is also used to remove large toxins (NSAIDS, others) from the blood stream before they cause organ damage.

Join us this week for a continuing education session on IMHA and TPE with our host VetVine

A look at how our team at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine achieved our goal of providing advanced life saving extracorporeal blood purification and dialysis and some of my personal journey to get here.

We also try to provide an introductory level education on just what exactly is “extracorporeal blood purification” and when should I consider seeking these services for my family pets.

The Cornell Veterinary Podcast is our audio storytelling platform where we take a deep dive into the discovery, care and learning that happens at the Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Hazel is an amazing young dog recently diagnosed with an acute kidney injury by her veterinarians at VCA Colonial Animal Hospital. When her kidneys were not improving with their strong medical management, Hazel needed kidney replacement therapy (dialysis). Her veterinarian referred Hazel to the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine Extracorporeal Therapies and Blood Purification Unit for dialysis. Hazel was hospitalized for several days of dialysis and then transitioned to being an outpatient for follow up treatment.

After 5 treatments of dialysis, we are thrilled to share that Hazel has recovered enough kidney function to have graduated from our Dialysis Program. We removed her dialysis catheter on Tuesday and she is very excited to move on with her life! These lifesaving dialysis treatments prevented a sad outcome for Hazel.

If you have any questions about dialysis, plasma exchange, or blood purification (toxin removal, other), please reach out to us for more information.

This lovely girl Sahara was on the verge of succumbing to her terrible immune mediated disease despite best efforts from her team Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Her own body was attacking and destroying her red blood cells!! Three treatments of plasma exchange with our skilled extracorporeal blood purification team set Sahara back on the path to health and she was able to rejoin her loving family at home.
