Volunteer Spotlight: Melissa Travis Dunham
We love our volunteers! So, in honor of National Volunteer Week, we'd like to spotlight some of the folks who give their time to taking care of our adoptable animals.
Meet Melissa: Guinea Pig Foster & Social Media content creator. Former Feline Friend & Member of the Board of Directors.
What do you love the most about being a volunteer?:
"It's so satisfying to think that I'm helping an animal, who needs extra help, even in a small way. When fostering guinea pigs, it's a wonderful feeling when a scared, small creature begins to trust me and relaxes to be a happy, bouncing guinea pig."

Eddie and Godiva!
We hope your New Year celebrations were as much fun as Eddie and Godiva’s! These two goofballs had a great time bouncing, spinning, pawing, and pouncing on each other this past weekend. If your resolution involves adopting a dog, we have a bunch of nice pups waiting at the shelter.
You can see all the dogs ready for adoption at: https://www.spcaonline.com/dogs
If you see someone catches your eye, email our adotions team at [email protected] for more information!
Christmas Cookies!
Our shelter dogs enjoyed these tasty donated treats! Come with us on a quick tour of the dog wing and meet some of our current residents as we hand them out. See someone you want to adopt? Give us a call at 607-257-1822
Benelli!
It looks like Benelli (black and white dog) is having fun with his canine housemate in foster! If you have a dog who loves this type of rowdy wrestling, maybe he’s just what you’re looking for. Give us a call at 607-257-1822 and we can put you in touch with his foster family, so you can get to know this big goofball. He’s pretty charming!
MMM...Pupcicle
Behind the scenes at the shelter! No, it’s not a trendy new drink from Starbucks, it’s a “pupsicle”, ready to go into the freezer.
Freezing tasty snacks in water is an easy way for us to give our dogs a fun, challenging snack as they lick and chew the ice to get the treats. This diet pupsicle is for our hefty pups, and features canned pumpkin, canned dog food, and low-cal kibble.
If you want to help our dogs enjoy their canine version of a PSL this fall, we can always use supplies from our wishlists at Chewy: https://www.chewy.com/g/spca-of-tompkins-county_b74318106 and Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2ZVUUM77Y7RBH “
Ruben Playing
Do you recall Ruben, the super-shy cat we have been featuring?
Thanks to his patient foster mom’s magic touch, he recently discovered that playing WITH humans is really fun too! Gone are the days where he was sneakily playing with toy mice in the middle of the night. She now says: “He wants me to play with him all the time.” What a big milestone for this guy!
Are you up for the rewarding project of helping a nervous cat settle into your home? Give us a call at 607-257-1822 and we will put you in touch with his foster so you can meet him
Quick! Call the Lab of Ornithology! We’ve spotted a new species of flycatcher!
Okay, maybe not, but Ruben promises that if you adopt him, he will help keep your house clear of flying pests. He’s busy honing his skills in foster and waiting for his new humans to find him. It’s tough to be a super shy guy, and he is our longest feline resident. If you think he might be a match, email us at [email protected] or call 607-257-1822 and we’ll put you in touch with his foster family
