With summer approaching, I want to share some important information about grooming for double-coated dogs. I have received numerous requests to shave or cut these breeds short, but it's crucial to understand why groomers might refuse this request or advise against it.

Breeds with double coats include:
Pomeranians, Australian Shepherd,Husky, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Newfoundland, Great Pyrenees, Corgi, Border Collies, Collies, German Shepherd, Saint Bernard and more.

After shaving, there is only a 50% chance that the double coat will fully recover over time.

Misconception: Shaving a double-coated dog helps keep them cool.

Fact: Shaving destroys the natural airflow circulation between the undercoat and the guard coat.

Instead: Consider a de-shedding treatment to remove the downy undercoat, cool the coat, and flatten it. A light trim to shape the mane, tail, feet, and feathering, along with deshedding, can help manage the fur while maintaining a healthy coat.

Here are more reasons not to shave your double-coated dog:

1. It can cause alopecia (patchy hair loss) or changes in hair texture.
2. They will still shed, but the hairs will be smaller.
3. Your dog is at risk of sunburn.
4. Shaving disrupts the coat's ability to regulate body temperature.
5. The regrowing coat is more likely to mat.

The only reason to shave a double-coated dog is for severe matting close to the skin (pelting), which cannot be brushed out and is causing discomfort to the dog.

Attached are some images from a Google image search to illustrate the potential effects of shaving a double-coated dog's coat. Please note that there are medical conditions that can affect your dog's coat, and we will always inform owners if we suspect any health issues, recommending a visit to the veterinarian.

🐾🚫 Why You Shouldn't Shave Your Double Coat Dog! 🚫🐾

Hey friends! Today, I wanted to shed some light on an important topic - why it's best to avoid shaving a double-coated dog. Whether you have a fluffy Pomeranian, a majestic Samoyed, or any other breed with a beautiful double coat, here are some key reasons to consider:

1️⃣ Natural Temperature Regulation: Dogs with double coats have fur that acts as insulation, keeping them cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Shaving their fur can disrupt this natural temperature regulation, making them more vulnerable to extreme weather conditions.

2️⃣ Protection from the Elements: The double coat serves as a barrier against the sun's harmful UV rays, insects, and potential skin irritants. Shaving can expose their delicate skin to sunburn, irritations, and even increase the risk of scratches or injuries.

3️⃣ Coat Texture and Appearance: Each dog breed has its unique coat texture and appearance, which contributes to their charm and identity. Shaving a double coat can alter the texture, color, and overall look of their fur, potentially diminishing their breed's recognized standards.

4️⃣ Potential Regrowth Issues: Shaving a double coat can lead to uneven regrowth, changes in color or texture, or even permanent damage to the coat. This can result in a less desirable appearance and may take a long time to rectify, if at all.

5️⃣ Skin Sensitivity: Dogs with sensitive skin are more prone to developing rashes, hot spots, and other skin issues when their natural protective fur is removed. Shaving can expose their skin to irritants, allergens, and potential injuries.

Instead of shaving, regular grooming and brushing can help maintain a double-coated dog's fur. A professional groomer can advise on appropriate techniques to prevent matting and maintain a healthy coat.

Let's remember that our furry friends' well-being should always be a priority. If you have any doubts or concerns, consult a professional groomer or veterinarian who can provide tailored advice for your dog's specific needs.

There are several dog breeds that generally should avoid being shaved:

Pomeranian
German Shepherd
Australian Shepherd
Belgian Shepherd
Great Pyrenees
Siberian Husky
Alaskan Malamute
Samoyed
Akita
Border Collie
Bernese Mountain
Chow Chow
Golden Retriever
Puli
Komondor
