Eight years! Its been 8 whole years since opening the doors of the salon! I always knew I loved 2 things most. Art and animals. I searched for years trying to find my place in the world (as all young people do). I worked different jobs, tried different things in college, got 2 business degrees, and still didn't feel I'd found my true calling. When my son was born I worked at the daycares he attended so I wouldn't have to leave him but could contribute to the household financially. I loved making the curriculum of little crafts, helping the kids learn motor skills, and watching them grow and make friends and listening to the cute things they would come up with. But still, it wasn't my permanent place. Something was still missing.
I went to work for an office where I was in charge of helping with payroll, staffing medical professionals to see patients in their homes, and listening to the patients and their families complain about said "professionals" and dealing with trying to get approval from the insurance companies. I hated almost every minute in that office. It was some of the most boring, repetitive, mind numbing stuff of my nightmares and I spent far too long there trying to convince myself it would help me in my career.
Then I came upon a post about a grooming van and called. It just so happened that it was my old boss Amy's post. I talked to her for over an hour about life, her business, how unhappy I was with my career path, her kids (who I went to school with lol), and inspiration just sparked. She told me that she would finish my training to groom and help me open my own salon eventually when we both felt I was ready.
So I bought a grooming table, clippers, shears, and everything she listed. I trained with her weekends, my days off from the office, and anytime I could get there. My 1st several grooms were awful. But eventually it clicked, I could see the potential in how a finished groom would look on a particular dog and execute it as close to what the owners expected as possible, and I loved it! I knew I'd found my place.
Eventually I'd put in enough hours to be confident in my skills and decided to go the corporate route to do a higher volume of dogs each day to get my speed up and have benefits while getting ready to open my own place. I'd also worked as a bather at Petsmart part time before going full time at the office and had worked for Amy part time as a bather right after high school. For those that don't know, if you don't properly bathe and dry the dogs, the haircut won't turn out well no matter your skill level.
After a while I saw a rent sign in town, called the number, and suddenly I was ready to move in. The building was old, had been empty a few years, everything in it needed to be upgraded. But it was my starter building and I was ready! I had no idea if anyone would book an appointment with the new groomer in town. No idea if there was even a market or need for a groomer. But I wanted to at least try. So that's what I did.
And just like that, I had my grand opening, started getting phone calls and texts, and was officially a small business owner. I went from a few dogs my 1st day open to more and more. I found a nicer building and moved there. I met customers, rescues, other business owners, and just... grew.
Thank you to everyone who helped get the business started, grew it, shared it, returned to us, anything. Whether we've seen you once, dozens of times, you've been with us from the beginning, only came once, or just shared a post or liked us, you still helped us grow and we are grateful.
I'm so thankful I get to see the dogs everyday. I get to see them grow, get comfortable with the tub and table and process. I get to bring out the confidence in them, calm them, play with them, help them with a functional but cute cut, alert owners to medical issues that may otherwise be missed, and build relationships with the customers. My son has gone from elementary school to a high school senior. So many things have changed while the business has been a constant.
Anyway, thank you everyone for these 8 short years of being in business. We look forward to many, many more.
