We are happy to report that calving is going smoothly. The babies are thriving and the cowboys are looking forward to a week of good weather.
The calves are usually tucked up tight and close to their mothers, so it’s a treat to see them playing around together like this. They all banded together for a romp around the snow while their mothers were feeding on the hay we had laid out.
A few days ago we moved the mother cows on to the calving grounds. Just like a farmer planting a crop; the first calf will mark the beginning of our season. It will be the beginning of long nights calving, unpredictable days getting the cows to summer pasture, and countless hours in the hay field. All to bring the herd home for the winter so we can start our season again next spring. There are so many things in this life that you just can’t count on. But on this place one thing is for sure, the calves are on the way.
