SOLD - JESS - 15 Year Old Red Mare - Available
Jess is a non-papered stock horse, I bought her at a Tom Moore sale in August of 2022. She was put through the sale by a horse trader out of Ohio. When I had the final bid - he looked at me like all horse traders do trying to get more money and said "she's a really good mare"...he's talking to me trying to get more money, he's eyeballing the auctioneer - I had the bid! I bought her that day for my then sophomore to use for the equestrian team. We brought her home and my kid used her for the equestrian team for her sophomore and junior year and we shared Jess for an open show at the KalVal one day - it was fun. Jess was bought with shoes on and she stayed inside with shoes like a show horse for the first few months - late fall hit 2022, shoes came off and she went out with the rest of the horses. Jess stays outside barefoot 24/7. This mare is not "mare-ish" I still wonder what Mare-ish means - if its bitchy? this mare is not. She holds her own out there with several horses and actually likes her alone time - I'll see her chillin several hundred feet away from the others. She's an easy keeper, eats whatever, keeps good weight, and doesn't get fat. I grain her once a day with that cheap TSC sweet feed. The seller/horse trader said she was used in a "program" - the mare is broke, she's broke broke. She likes to go slow. You can take her in the show pen tomorrow - you can take her on the trails tomorrow. My kid hadn't touched this horse since she went back in the field returning from the 2023 Equestrian team meets - so spring/summer this year; mom(me) said I'm selling this horse. Why am I selling her: I have other horses and I'm retiring from work and the horse "biz" soon. I had only ridden this mare like twice. In April 2024 I threw her in the trailer when I delivered a different horse and stopped by a friend's house and we went trail riding out in the fields and this mare was perfect. In May 2024 I haul Jess to the Spur of the Moment show and rode the western plus the ranch classes, it was fun! and in June I took Jess on a three hour plus Waterloo ride - She's not super bold on bridges and rivers but she'll do it and do it safely and it was fun....that horse trader was right - this is a really good mare.
Gets in the trailer fine, Vets good, Farrier good (this mare has been sound and barefoot), ties good, trims good, mounts good, everything good! you will get no kicks, no bites, she's food driven and will probably chase you for snacks. She's sweet, none of that bitchy mare stuff. Vac's up to date, worming up to date, farrier up to date, coggins current. If you are interested in any pre-purchase exams - that's on your money. Jess is 15'2", she makes a decent winter hair coat, I didn't blanket her, I've not had her teeth worked on, you will need spurs if you want to lope - she likes to go slow. She's good leaded, neck reins, got a cute jog - she'll trot out too. I did have the the dr. check her teeth, age is accurate.
The bad or otherwise: Jess had pre-existing eyelid damage/right eye - which I think makes her more prone to eye infections/ulcers - I noticed a gray spot after that June trail ride and got my vet involved. So after multiple dye tests, treatments and a cytology - the mare's eye passed the dye test and is well into healing - Doc cleared her to sell. There may be a small gray spot on her right eye for a while or forever? You just have to keep an "eye" on it. Also, on the ground for showmanship - she's got a mean turn on the forehand, if you wanted to do the showmanship for real with her you'd have to work on that turn to get her on the back end.
I think she would be best for a young or old green rider with some riding talent and guidance - or she’d be perfect for an older lady that can ride that just wants to either go show or trail ride/chill on a great red mare.
Let me know when you want to come test drive her - North Jackson, Michigan by Pleasant Lake **I put some videos in the comments
